Fans of the previous version can let out a sigh of relief since the Salomon Sense Ride 4 has only changed a little from its predecessor. These kicks still pack plenty of cushion to keep you bouncing along on the pavement as you make your way to your favorite trailhead. This shoe's Optivibe midsole is road-ready, and the sticky rubber outsole delivers on loose gravel and mud, making the latest version of the Sense Ride our favorite crossover shoe. If your favorite trail runs require a few miles of road running to access, this shoe should be high on your list. Its mesh upper is super breathable, making them great for warm days, and allowing them to dry quickly after any mandatory water crossings. Additionally, we found these shoes refreshingly wide compared to many offerings from Salomon, making them a good option for longer runs when your feet may swell.
Our testers used to low-to-the-ground minimalist or zero drop shoes found the Sense Ride 4 particularly unstable, while folks who mostly run on the road didn't seem to mind the high stack and 8mm drop. Traversing steep hills or picking your way through scree may be difficult in these shoes due to their lack of stability and sensitivity. Still, overall, this shoe is an excellent compromise between cushioning and support for the road and traction for the trails. Their width and breathability keep your tired feet feeling fresh, and these should be on the radar of any runner looking to do some long training runs this summer.

Switchback Travel

For a trail runner that can do it all, we love the Salomon Sense Ride 4. This shoe is equally at home on quick door-to-trail runs as it is during ultra-distance pursuits, and can even handle technical cross-country terrain with ease. The all-around performance isn’t surprising given the Salomon’s versatile design, which features a moderate amount of cushioning (27mm in the heel), generously sized toe box that accommodates our wide feet, fairly standard 8-millimeter drop, and full Contragrip rubber outsole. We’ve put over 700 miles on various iterations of the Sense Ride, and the “4” has proven to be a consistently comfortable and high performance shoe for a wide variety of terrain.

But while the Sense Ride 4 is good at everything, it’s not necessarily a top performer in any specific category. Held up against the specialist Bushido below, you give up a bit of grip and ground feel for off-trail terrain, and the Salomon is not as soft and lightweight as a max-cushioned shoe like the Speedgoat. Further, although we’ve used it for several FKT attempts, the Sense Ride 4 is not nearly as speed-oriented as shoes like Catamount or Torrent 2 below. But for a one-quiver trail runner that can handle most terrain with aplomb, it’s one of the most well-rounded designs we’ve tried.  You know, vibration is the one thing we don't talk about very much, and yet we know it's about 35 of all of the impact load of running, so the engineering in these materials is unique. It utilizes a combination of lightweight cushioned materials to reduce vibration and help energy return. I'M not sure how scientific or how bulletproof the science is. But it is still nice to know that salomon of that detail orientated in terms of their tech in terms of the lacing salomon, have mastered speed lacing, like no other brand, has the combination of the shape of the shoe as well as this lacing system gives you A locked-in feel that is non-existent in other brands

 Our bodies are really good at doing this, but what does happen is that muscle, tendon, adipose tissue and fascia absorb these vibrations and dissipate them while we run causing these tissues to in turn undergo damage. So what salomon have done is research, how their midsoles can reduce the vibrations that our tissues have to undergo and, in turn, reduce the amount of damage that they have to undergo. You know, vibration is the one thing we don't talk about very much, and yet we know it's about 35 of all of the impact load of running, so the engineering in these materials is unique. It utilizes a combination of lightweight cushioned materials to reduce vibration and help energy return

 I must say no other brand allows me to be more in control of my footing and more agile through technical terrain than salomon does, and i think a large part of this has to do with this design of having firmer, cushioning a nice lock down and a Not so stacked cushioning design the sense ride 4 is a regular to narrow fit it's not quite as accommodating as some of its counterparts in the market, but it's certainly not as narrow as its own s-lab sense. 8.. At the arch, you won't find a lot of contouring or support, so this won't suit every runner, some cool innovation that salomon have done with their midsole cushioning has to do with what we call vibration reduction

 Is it an ultra running shoe, probably not for most runners, the cost of being a performance driven brand is that the shoe doesn't necessarily offer the best arch support for those needing it? It'S also not a soft squishy hoka that you can wear all day long in if you are getting the shoe just for jeep track running, not too much technical running, i would suggest pinning it against the salomon ultra glad, which is a little bit softer and more Forgiving underfoot now, i think, as a salomon shoe, i am quite optimistic in terms of the shoes mileage, but i am still wary that this four foot section may bottom out a little bit quicker than some of its competitors on the market. Nice review, but the Pulsar is automatically out of contention as the ultimate winter shoe for me due to its price and durability.

There's surprisingly little talk of Salomon S/LAB Pulsar. The shoe is lightweight (for real) and was selected as the Road Trail Run's trail shoe of the year. I tried to find a pair after RTR reviewed the shoe in March 2021 but it wasn't available. I kind of forgot the whole thing but was reminded of their existence after reading RTR's shoe of the year articles.

I received my pair earlier this week and here's some first impressions, based on a 11k run.

# Size: 

Salomon's sizes differs a little from Saucony/Nike/New Balance. Where I use 42.5 in other brands, Salomon offers 42 2/3. Japan's CM based sizes helped to find the correct one from Salomon's system and 42 2/3 was the correct size. The fit is quite snug but I wouldn't size up.

# Weight:

Almost all the shoe review's contain the word "lightweight", no matter what the actual weight of the shoe is. Pulsar is actually lightweight. Crazy lightweight, 175g for the size 42 2/3. In comparison, Vaporfly Next% 2 weights 195g.

# Stability:

More stable than NB RC v1 and Endorphin Speed. Not as stable as something like Endorphin Shift. 

# Traction:

As long as the snow is nicely packed, the grip is good. Not the best shoe if the snow is loose. Compared to NB RC v1, the grip is better on Pulsar because the lugs are little longer.

# Ride:

Based on the first run, I'm extremely happy with the shoe. I see it replacing NB RC v1 as my preferred go to shoe for those faster winter runs. Not yet sure about using Pulsar for a longer run, but I perhaps test that scenario next week. 

The ride feels better (more stable and "bouncier") if I strike with forefoot. I like that because with some shoes I feel that I need to hit the ground with a heel in order to get the best out of the rocker/stability. 

# Summary:

The shoe feels "right" from the fit to ride. 

So is it the ultimate winter shoe? Depends on the winter. If the weather is from -1 to -10 celsius and you are running on road with a packed snow, I think it is hard to beat Pulsar. For colder temperatures the upper is maybe little too thin and the fit too snug to handle a warmer sock.

Salomon S/LAB Pulsar: Ultimate winter road running shoe?

 Solomon is, you know, fairly well known for their durability, uh comfort, it's not as comfortable as the original we're not getting that soft layer underneath the ortholite insole is where you're gon na get the most cushioning that tends to wear out, or at least flatten, pretty quickly. So, if you're into a responsive ride with a little bit of give, that has an eight millimeter stack, this is a great option fit. I call this a precision fit. They use, of course, their

 It had that balance of cushioning and flexibility and lightness uh. It just did so much so well, one of the ways this is moving away from the third version and more towards the original version is just in the weight department. The sensori 3 weighed in about 345 grams in my size, size 11, we're at 325 grams. In my size, size 11 - that is, a 20 gram weight loss, which is about 0

 We have a solid trial contender for those who want to go fast for those who want to go long, be protected, have plenty of grip and an overall durability. Eventually, while it is still more responsive than the original doesn't have that little layer of give some people really like and crave that responsive shoe, the midsole does provide that added protection because of the responsiveness it does lack a bit of give yeah. It'S still comfy for longer ultras and longer runs, and it will provide you with that extra protection that you might need. A sensoride 4 is certainly a nice step in the right direction way to go solomon, let's get a little bit more specific talking about build quality

 This is a great choice honestly, because these these are very, very lightweight, very comfortable overall and uh. Probably in these, you will be the fastest all right because they're so light because they're so comfortable, because they don't have any bulkiness to them at all. Of course, if you do prefer sun protection, this is really not the choice you want to go with, because there isn't really any no proofing, no protection, but overall, whenever it comes to its purpose as a trail running shoe, these are phenomenal all right and the very Last criterion here is the price. These are not designed to be used in cold temperatures at all, but in hot temperatures these are very nice and breathable feel very light.  Let'S move on to the criteria. Number five temperature. Now again, i'm not gon na talk about the colder temperatures, because these have nothing to do with cold temperatures. These are not waterproof

Topo Athletic might not be a household name like Salomon or La Sportiva, but their lineup of trail and road running shoes speaks for itself (not to mention, they’re founded by the former CEO of Vibram). The MTN Racer 2 is a standout trail-specific model in their quiver: like the Lone Peak above, it features a wide toe box and locked-in waist and heel, lending all-day comfort for swollen and hard-working feet. But the MTN Racer tacks on some technical chops, with a 5-millimeter drop (compared to the Altra’s 0mm), slightly firmer cushioning, a sticky Vibram Megagrip sole (a blend often used in climbing approach shoes), and a small decrease in weight. Overall, it’s a really easy shoe to get along with—we recommend the MTN Racer to friends more than any other model here, and have yet to know anyone who’s been less than thrilled.

The MTN Racer was recently updated, and the “2” features a more breathable upper, revamped heel, and a refined fit (we had to go a half size up with the first iteration but dropped down to our normal size with the “2”). We think it’s a great update to an already excellent shoe, and with a solid build the MTN Racer should last you upwards of 500 miles. Where it does fall short is on truly off-camber terrain—mountain runners will want to opt for a stiffer and protective ride like the La Sportiva Bushido or Salomon Sense Ride above. Chase the Summit

 It is highly cushioned. On the positive side, the shoe seemed well built, it was light and had a pleasant appearance. Would I recommend the shoe, I hesitate because it was my personal preferences that lead me to return the shoe, but it seemed like a solid product.

 So far, the reason I say these have a lot in common with the Ultra Trail Running shoes is because of the fit. They have this sort of foot shaped toe box that reminds me a lot of the Ultra Lone Peaks which I also wear a lot and I really like how these shoes wrap around my foot. Keep in mind my feet are really weird. I have kind of a a wide midfoot so in this area, but I've got a fairly narrow heel and I've got a fairly wide forefoot so I go from narrow in the back all the way to pretty wide up front and these toppo or toppo Mountain Racer twos accommodate my feet really well

 and I like that the tongue is pretty thin because it allows you to really snug it down and get a pretty good fit on your ankle. Around the perimeter of the ankle, though, there is some padding and it is a little bit thick in the back, but it's not at all uncomfortable or anything like that. and this shoe doesn't feel overly hot on even on really hot days because of that mesh all around the outside of the shoe. The midsole material on the Mount Racer 2 is called zip foam

 They're built to be durable and robust, but also not weigh you down too much on the trail. and I've been fortunate enough to be running in these shoes for probably about 60 miles now. all on trails and you can see they're pretty nasty looking, so I've gotten some good use out of them in wet conditions, dry conditions, really hot conditions. so I think I have a well-rounded opinion I can share with you before we get into it

Topo MTN Racer 2 Trail Shoe - An Altra Alternative with Tons of Grip!

 Montana and Idaho. The durability is sort of in question but so far it’s nothing a little shoegoo can’t fix. These shoes are the perfect balance of a do it all trail runner. O and the grip is amazing

This year I tried the ALTRA Olympus 4 and lone peak 5. Some of the sloppiest fitting shoes I’ve ever tried. Tried the HOKA speedgoat4 and while these were great for in town casual walking. These were a nightmare on the trail

Best trail runner of 2021?

(1) The MTN Racer 2 runs a bit large big. I recommend trying them on and probably downsizing a half size. I'm normally a mens 10.5-11 and wear a 10 in this (still provides proper gap between my toe and the end of the toe box to allow for rock bumping and downhills)

In designing shoes, as in most things, there are nearly always opposing goals to balance.  The shoe needs to be sufficiently cushioned, but not so much that it's an unresponsive marshmallow with no feel of the trail.  It needs to be durable and protective but can't be a heavy tank. The sole and upper need to be supportive but not stiff

AWESOME Trail Runners

 I have flat/fallen arches so any ridge or rise under my arches will initially feel good but eventually cause pain. This is not to say that there is aggressive arch support built into the shoes. There is not. But it was enough that it was a problem for me

 That said, the design of the heel support was such that I didn't experience any hint of heel pain, the problem that led me to Altra in the first place.  I ended up returning the the Mtn Racer 2s..

 I probably preferred the Mtn Racer 2 to either of the Altra models in this respect.  Altra's proprietary outsole is often criticized for its lack of grip on wet surfaces. Topo seems to use Vibram across their lineup, which is typically lauded for its grip in wet conditions. In fairness, I have never noticed an issue with my Altras in wet conditions and didn't test these shoes in wet conditions

 For construction the seams look more robust, and the Vibram sole in my experience holds up better than standard Altra. Altra uses Vibram on their high priced Olympus 4 and that is one of the toughest shoes I have ever run in, hands down.  I believe a 5mm drop is the sweet spot for most of us, take your time getting adjusted to them, you'll feel less calf burn and wonder why your quads have gotten weaker, this is normal!

Have 2 runs in these so far so this is not a long term review, more of a short overview on fit and perceived construction.  If you are an Altra lover I STRONGLY suggest you give these a try. Toe box is wide but SLIGHTLY narrower than a lone peak, NBD. I really appreciate how well the heel locks in with the Topos

If you like Altra, you'll love these
