These kicks still pack plenty of cushion to keep you bouncing along on the pavement as you make your way to your favorite trailhead. This shoe's Optivibe midsole is road-ready, and the sticky rubber outsole delivers on loose gravel and mud, making the latest version of the Sense Ride our favorite crossover shoe. If your favorite trail runs require a few miles of road running to access, this shoe should be high on your list. Its mesh upper is super breathable, making them great for warm days, and allowing them to dry quickly after any mandatory water crossings. Additionally, we found these shoes refreshingly wide compared to many offerings from Salomon, making them a good option for longer runs when your feet may swell.
Our testers used to low-to-the-ground minimalist or zero drop shoes found the Sense Ride 4 particularly unstable, while folks who mostly run on the road didn't seem to mind the high stack and 8mm drop. Traversing steep hills or picking your way through scree may be difficult in these shoes due to their lack of stability and sensitivity. Still, overall, this shoe is an excellent compromise between cushioning and support for the road and traction for the trails. Their width and breathability keep your tired feet feeling fresh, and these should be on the radar of any runner looking to do some long training runs this summer.

Switchback Travel

For a trail runner that can do it all, we love the Salomon Sense Ride 4. This shoe is equally at home on quick door-to-trail runs as it is during ultra-distance pursuits, and can even handle technical cross-country terrain with ease. The all-around performance isn’t surprising given the Salomon’s versatile design, which features a moderate amount of cushioning (27mm in the heel), generously sized toe box that accommodates our wide feet, fairly standard 8-millimeter drop, and full Contragrip rubber outsole. We’ve put over 700 miles on various iterations of the Sense Ride, and the “4” has proven to be a consistently comfortable and high performance shoe for a wide variety of terrain.

But while the Sense Ride 4 is good at everything, it’s not necessarily a top performer in any specific category. Held up against the specialist Bushido below, you give up a bit of grip and ground feel for off-trail terrain, and the Salomon is not as soft and lightweight as a max-cushioned shoe like the Speedgoat. Further, although we’ve used it for several FKT attempts, the Sense Ride 4 is not nearly as speed-oriented as shoes like Catamount or Torrent 2 below. But for a one-quiver trail runner that can handle most terrain with aplomb, it’s one of the most well-rounded designs we’ve tried.  You know, vibration is the one thing we don't talk about very much, and yet we know it's about 35 of all of the impact load of running, so the engineering in these materials is unique. It utilizes a combination of lightweight cushioned materials to reduce vibration and help energy return. I'M not sure how scientific or how bulletproof the science is. But it is still nice to know that salomon of that detail orientated in terms of their tech in terms of the lacing salomon, have mastered speed lacing, like no other brand, has the combination of the shape of the shoe as well as this lacing system gives you A locked-in feel that is non-existent in other brands

 Our bodies are really good at doing this, but what does happen is that muscle, tendon, adipose tissue and fascia absorb these vibrations and dissipate them while we run causing these tissues to in turn undergo damage. So what salomon have done is research, how their midsoles can reduce the vibrations that our tissues have to undergo and, in turn, reduce the amount of damage that they have to undergo. You know, vibration is the one thing we don't talk about very much, and yet we know it's about 35 of all of the impact load of running, so the engineering in these materials is unique. It utilizes a combination of lightweight cushioned materials to reduce vibration and help energy return

 I must say no other brand allows me to be more in control of my footing and more agile through technical terrain than salomon does, and i think a large part of this has to do with this design of having firmer, cushioning a nice lock down and a Not so stacked cushioning design the sense ride 4 is a regular to narrow fit it's not quite as accommodating as some of its counterparts in the market, but it's certainly not as narrow as its own s-lab sense. 8.. At the arch, you won't find a lot of contouring or support, so this won't suit every runner, some cool innovation that salomon have done with their midsole cushioning has to do with what we call vibration reduction

 Is it an ultra running shoe, probably not for most runners, the cost of being a performance driven brand is that the shoe doesn't necessarily offer the best arch support for those needing it? It'S also not a soft squishy hoka that you can wear all day long in if you are getting the shoe just for jeep track running, not too much technical running, i would suggest pinning it against the salomon ultra glad, which is a little bit softer and more Forgiving underfoot now, i think, as a salomon shoe, i am quite optimistic in terms of the shoes mileage, but i am still wary that this four foot section may bottom out a little bit quicker than some of its competitors on the market. Nice review, but the Pulsar is automatically out of contention as the ultimate winter shoe for me due to its price and durability.

There's surprisingly little talk of Salomon S/LAB Pulsar. The shoe is lightweight (for real) and was selected as the Road Trail Run's trail shoe of the year. I tried to find a pair after RTR reviewed the shoe in March 2021 but it wasn't available. I kind of forgot the whole thing but was reminded of their existence after reading RTR's shoe of the year articles.

I received my pair earlier this week and here's some first impressions, based on a 11k run.

# Size: 

Salomon's sizes differs a little from Saucony/Nike/New Balance. Where I use 42.5 in other brands, Salomon offers 42 2/3. Japan's CM based sizes helped to find the correct one from Salomon's system and 42 2/3 was the correct size. The fit is quite snug but I wouldn't size up.

# Weight:

Almost all the shoe review's contain the word "lightweight", no matter what the actual weight of the shoe is. Pulsar is actually lightweight. Crazy lightweight, 175g for the size 42 2/3. In comparison, Vaporfly Next% 2 weights 195g.

# Stability:

More stable than NB RC v1 and Endorphin Speed. Not as stable as something like Endorphin Shift. 

# Traction:

As long as the snow is nicely packed, the grip is good. Not the best shoe if the snow is loose. Compared to NB RC v1, the grip is better on Pulsar because the lugs are little longer.

# Ride:

Based on the first run, I'm extremely happy with the shoe. I see it replacing NB RC v1 as my preferred go to shoe for those faster winter runs. Not yet sure about using Pulsar for a longer run, but I perhaps test that scenario next week. 

The ride feels better (more stable and "bouncier") if I strike with forefoot. I like that because with some shoes I feel that I need to hit the ground with a heel in order to get the best out of the rocker/stability. 

# Summary:

The shoe feels "right" from the fit to ride. 

So is it the ultimate winter shoe? Depends on the winter. If the weather is from -1 to -10 celsius and you are running on road with a packed snow, I think it is hard to beat Pulsar. For colder temperatures the upper is maybe little too thin and the fit too snug to handle a warmer sock.

Salomon S/LAB Pulsar: Ultimate winter road running shoe?

 Solomon is, you know, fairly well known for their durability, uh comfort, it's not as comfortable as the original we're not getting that soft layer underneath the ortholite insole is where you're gon na get the most cushioning that tends to wear out, or at least flatten, pretty quickly. So, if you're into a responsive ride with a little bit of give, that has an eight millimeter stack, this is a great option fit. I call this a precision fit. They use, of course, their

 It had that balance of cushioning and flexibility and lightness uh. It just did so much so well, one of the ways this is moving away from the third version and more towards the original version is just in the weight department. The sensori 3 weighed in about 345 grams in my size, size 11, we're at 325 grams. In my size, size 11 - that is, a 20 gram weight loss, which is about 0

 We have a solid trial contender for those who want to go fast for those who want to go long, be protected, have plenty of grip and an overall durability. Eventually, while it is still more responsive than the original doesn't have that little layer of give some people really like and crave that responsive shoe, the midsole does provide that added protection because of the responsiveness it does lack a bit of give yeah. It'S still comfy for longer ultras and longer runs, and it will provide you with that extra protection that you might need. A sensoride 4 is certainly a nice step in the right direction way to go solomon, let's get a little bit more specific talking about build quality

 This is a great choice honestly, because these these are very, very lightweight, very comfortable overall and uh. Probably in these, you will be the fastest all right because they're so light because they're so comfortable, because they don't have any bulkiness to them at all. Of course, if you do prefer sun protection, this is really not the choice you want to go with, because there isn't really any no proofing, no protection, but overall, whenever it comes to its purpose as a trail running shoe, these are phenomenal all right and the very Last criterion here is the price.  Now again, i'm not gon na talk about the colder temperatures, because these have nothing to do with cold temperatures. These are not waterproof. These are not designed to be used in cold temperatures at all, but in hot temperatures these are very nice and breathable feel very light.  Let'S move on to the criteria. Number five temperature. Now again, i'm not gon na talk about the colder temperatures, because these have nothing to do with cold temperatures. These are not waterproof

I did the same trail in 2018 wearing Altra. Lone Peaks. They held up fine and I would do the same again.

I am new to this community and hoping my post is in the right place.  I reviewed the Wiki &amp; FAQ prior to posting and did not find anything to answer my question.  I did see the point that footwear was personal, but hoping to get some info to help with my personal choice!

I will be hiking the Laugavegur Trail in early July this summer.  I will be walking north to south and staying in huts.  My plan is to extend the hike all the way to Skogar for a total of 51 miles.  My understanding is the weather/trail conditions can be wet, rainy, muddy, and many reports of the final 15 mile hike on Fimmvörðuháls Trail  include snowstorms even in the middle of summer.

I am moving my gear to light weight and ultralight after years of a more traditional approach.  I will be a couple weeks short of 54 when I make the trip and anything to lighten the load seems really smart.  Plus, I am a minimalist in general and love the spirit of ultralight hiking and backpacking.  Following this community has been a huge help in thinking about my pack, gear, etc.  

But I am trying to plan my footwear so I can have plenty of time to break in anything new I may acquire.  Here are my options:

1. Lowa Renegade mid-GTX:  I have had these boots for over a decade so I know what I am getting and know I will not have any issues with blisters, and that they will handle most any weather that comes my way.  Of course, a huge negative is they are about 1.5 pounds each, and I am trying to move away from such heavy gear.
2. Topo athletic Terraventure Low:  These are my favorite summer hikers, but I am not sure they will be up for Iceland.  I am particularly worried about low temps, steady rain and even snow and being stuck in low shoes with no waterproofing.  I would love to hear if anyone has experience on the trail and comments on hiking it with this type of footwear.
3. I picked up a pair of Loan Peaks used at REI (a return).  They seem pretty comfortable and might be a good compromise between my other two options above, but I do find the shoe a little sloshy feeling to wear and wonder about the grip (if that even matters on this trip).
4. The last shoe I am considering is the Salomon Ultra Mid 3 GTX.  Its light, but seems a little more rugged than the Lone Peaks.  I am willing to buy them if its the best choice, but obviously prefer to use something I already own.  I have tried on various La Sportiva shoes and none seem to fit me.  I also own a pair of speedgoats - good for trail running but the narrow fit bothers me so wouldn't take them on this long (for me) hike.

<div class="md"><p>I am new to this community and hoping my post is in the right place.  I reviewed the Wiki &amp; FAQ prior to posting and did not find anything to answer my question.  I did see the point that footwear was personal, but hoping to get some info to help with my personal choice!</p>

<p>I will be hiking the Laugavegur Trail in early July this summer.  I will be walking north to south and staying in huts.  My plan is to extend the hike all the way to Skogar for a total of 51 miles.  My understanding is the weather/trail conditions can be wet, rainy, muddy, and many reports of the final 15 mile hike on Fimmvörðuháls Trail  include snowstorms even in the middle of summer.</p>

<p>I am moving my gear to light weight and ultralight after years of a more traditional approach.  I will be a couple weeks short of 54 when I make the trip and anything to lighten the load seems really smart.  Plus, I am a minimalist in general and love the spirit of ultralight hiking and backpacking.  Following this community has been a huge help in thinking about my pack, gear, etc.  </p>

<p>But I am trying to plan my footwear so I can have plenty of time to break in anything new I may acquire.  Here are my options:</p>

<li>Lowa Renegade mid-GTX:  I have had these boots for over a decade so I know what I am getting and know I will not have any issues with blisters, and that they will handle most any weather that comes my way.  Of course, a huge negative is they are about 1.5 pounds each, and I am trying to move away from such heavy gear.</li>
<li>Topo athletic Terraventure Low:  These are my favorite summer hikers, but I am not sure they will be up for Iceland.  I am particularly worried about low temps, steady rain and even snow and being stuck in low shoes with no waterproofing.  I would love to hear if anyone has experience on the trail and comments on hiking it with this type of footwear.</li>
<li>I picked up a pair of Loan Peaks used at REI (a return).  They seem pretty comfortable and might be a good compromise between my other two options above, but I do find the shoe a little sloshy feeling to wear and wonder about the grip (if that even matters on this trip).</li>
<li>The last shoe I am considering is the Salomon Ultra Mid 3 GTX.  Its light, but seems a little more rugged than the Lone Peaks. Footwear for Laugavegur Trail Iceland

 Next we can take a look at the midsole, so the midsole of the Lone Peak six is still going to be that ego foam that we saw in the previous version. Ego Midsole is going to offer a medium level of cushioning. It's a super comfortable compound that has a little bit of bounce to it, where when I was out on the trails, it felt soft when I was hitting some downhills, but then added some resilience and some pop when I was making those steep climbs. And this foam worked so well on a variety of different surfaces

 Now this is a proprietary compound from Ultra itself where it's going to be super sticky on those trails and also offer a nice claw like lockdown on a variety of surfaces. It really just digs into any trail or any kind of surface that you're taking this shoe on. When I took the Lone Peak out on a lot of my training runs, I was kind of surprised of how grippy this rubber actually was out on the trail. Whether I was on some looser rock or some slippery fire road gravel, it it really clawed into the ground and gave me that trustworthy ride and grip that that I was really looking for in a shoe that can do it all

 The Lone Peak is still going to be adaptable and these plastic overlays are still super lightweight so it's not going to be anything that's very intrusive to you as you're running. There's still that gator attachment in the back here with that velcro on off, and instead of there being the clip on the front of the shoe for the Gator, you can just hook it on to this little area that they have on the laces as well and it just gives the shoe more of a cleaner look but still offers that rugged durability that you're gonna need if you wanted to add a Gator to the shoe. Next we can take a look at the midsole, so the midsole of the Lone Peak six is still going to be that ego foam that we saw in the previous version.  When I took the Lone Peak out on a lot of my training runs, I was kind of surprised of how grippy this rubber actually was out on the trail. Whether I was on some looser rock or some slippery fire road gravel, it it really clawed into the ground and gave me that trustworthy ride and grip that that I was really looking for in a shoe that can do it all. At the end of the outsole, there is this bumper here where for runners running steep downhills, it'll feel more steady when you're hitting those deep descents. So I ended up using the Lone Peak Six for a lot of my training runs leading up to a trail race that I just competed in

  I could just go down half a size to 11, but then I worry about how tight the mid foot would be, because there is definitely more mid foot support in the LP5 than the 4 or even the 4.5. I think I’m going to be sending these back and once again be cutting into the heels of a brand new pair of 4.5

5 is just too long compared to my 4 and 4.5 in the same size. Was this extra length intended to keep the big toe from rubbing against the top of the toe box? Did the addition of the wide model throw dimensions off at the factory in Vietnam? I have no idea, but for me my usual size in standard US 11.5 is half a size too long when it comes to the LP5

 I definitely can’t be slip slide skin melting in these on the trails.  The Ego obviously felt more responsive/springier compared to previous models.  I could just go down half a size to 11, but then I worry about how tight the mid foot would be, because there is definitely more mid foot support in the LP5 than the 4 or even the 4.5

Easily the comfiest trail runners I’ve used though. I’ve had Merell and Keen hiking boots/shoes, and neither lasted as long as my Altra Lone Peaks.
