Rotring 800+ vs Pentel GraphGear 1000

Check out the Alvin Draft-Matic for an example of what I consider nearly ideal knurling (also, best pencil ever if you don't care that it's not pocket-safe). - The pencil is WEAK! I had it in my front pants pocket and I sat down. I didn't feel the pencil reminding me that it was encountering difficulties in there, but later I found that the force, while not enough to alert me, had been enough to snap the knurled lower part of the barrel off the hexagonal upper part. They did screw together again and the pencil still works, but the threads are awfully small

It's certainly heavier compared to the plastic body of a papermate (hence the 4 stars), but not too bad and I love that I won't be throwing it away. I might actually buy 1-2 more to make sure one is always at hand.

Rotring 800: Definitely a problematic pencil. The mechanism is problematic and breaks too many leads.

Nice steady an functional lead pencil. Pricy! Not sure if I could support that price hence the reason for 3 stars. If not for the price 4.5 stars, would of been my grade!

I think I'd opt for something much different for that price. but not only that, those instruments are built for style and class, not necessarily function. In fact, I prefer the items I'm listing below to any of the expensive items I've tried. I narrowed down my search to a handful

I purchased for more control and better feel when designing. Well balanced, heavier than cheap plastic. Writes smooth and clean- long tip that retracts at a fraction of the price of other comparable products. Overall nice pencil

What I found is constantly retracting the tip whenever I set the pencil down (which could be every few minutes while I pick up reference material), was causing the lead to break (see more on this below). Eraser - The eraser has a metal poker attached to it to help clear lead jams in the thin tip. Others have said it uses standard Pentel eraser refills, but I haven't tried this yet. I use Pentel Hi-Polymer erasers since they're the same material, cheaper and faster to use than removing the eraser protective cap

Sadly, there just doesn't seem to be a pencil out there that meets this. Ironically, Pentel makes a few different erasers in a pencil like casing. I guess if I wanted to carry multiple things in my pocket I could carry them both, but I'd prefer if they figured out how to put both of them together in one writing instrument. But back to this pencil, its eraser is small and useless, but no more so than its competitors, so it stays in the pole position for the pocket pencil

I know it's typical and normal, but I mess up a lot and blow through little erasers like this. The grip is fantastic. It always feels secure and is a comfortable girth for my somewhat undersized hands. The lead feed action is satisfying

I am not talking about the reliability itself but about how comfortable it is to use. This pen allows you to do more with much less effort !! 2) You can hide the sharp and sensitive penfront inside the pen. While this may not be an obvious advantage, consider that you may accidently drop it once during its lifecycle. The fact that the pens tip is hidden on the inside does not only protect your investment itself it also somewhat lessens the likelyhood of an actual damage to your other inventory, your expensive new shirt - or worse an injury to a family members eye (kids) etc
