 Recently, I wanted to improve my setup for audio for things such as live streaming and voiceovers. So I picked up a new microphone, which you can see in the shot right here, and I also picked up a new interface, the Rode AI-1. And I just found out recently that Rode came out with firmware that actually improves the AI-1. So in the most recent firmware upgrade, they updated the amount of gain that you have

The RODE AI-1 audio interface is now even better!! 1.3.1 FIRMWARE!

 Recently, I wanted to improve my setup for audio for things such as live streaming and voiceovers.

 So I picked up a new microphone, which you can see in the shot right here,

 and I also picked up a new interface, the Rode AI-1.

 And I just found out recently that Rode came out with firmware that actually improves the AI-1.

 So in the most recent firmware upgrade, they updated the amount of gain that you have.

 The reason that's good is because of mics like this, dynamic mics,

 you need to boost the gain because they're really quiet.

 Normally, the AI-1 has 45 decibels of gain.

 And even that amount, of course, will help make your input more audible.

 But what they did in the most recent firmware upgrade is upgrade it to 60.

 And the process for upgrading is really straightforward.

 The only thing that you have to do is download these two applications.

 I will link to them in the description below.

 I'll choose the AI-1 stock firmware update.

 And this one says it's up to date because, of course, I've already updated it.

 But this is where the system would take care of that for you.

 Now, this only brings you up to version 1.3.

 In order to get 1.31, what you have to do is download Rode Central.

 And again, I've already updated it, so you're seeing what you're seeing now.

 Otherwise, it will just walk you through the process.

 You've gone from 45 decibels of gain to 60.

 An additional benefit of this is if your mic isn't as quiet as the mic that I have

 or something like the SM7B, and let's say you needed about 40 decibels of gain.

 This way, you're not turning it almost all the way up.

 So even though the AI-1 isn't a noisy interface,

 you don't have to drive the preamps as much by turning up the dials so much.

 Now, one thing you may be thinking is, why can't I just record it at that lower volume

 I'm going to link to a video in the description below

 that explains it much better than I probably could.

 But suffice it to say, you're not doing yourself with any favors

 as far as the signal to noise ratio goes,

 the signal being what you put into the mic and, of course, the noise.

 So it's always better to record the best that you can going into the mic.

 And that 60 decibels that you get now with the updated firmware on the AI-1

 I am going to do a separate video on these two pieces of equipment,

 the mic that you can see in the shot right now and why I chose that one,

 and also why I think the Rode AI-1 interface is an incredible interface.

Personally, the look and quality are both qualities that I prefer over other options such as the GoXLR, the Focusrite Scarlett Solo, and the Rode AI-1. My current headphone upgrade choice is the Beyerdynamic DT77X Go, but I am not sure if these would be worth it over the HiFiman Sundaras. I am also a bit new to the audiophile scene, so there might be a few things that I don't know of that you might.

 I've attached the screenshots of the video to compare against what I received to illustrate what I'm talking about. There is supposed to be a foam insert on the inside of the lid of the box to prevent scuffing and protect from hits. The cardboard casing also fit the box perfectly, as opposed to mine. I also noticed the usb cable had a plastic bag to contain it, while mine did not

 Back to the front of the interface and on the preamp side you can see that we actually have a noitric combo jack enabling you to plug in either an XLR input from a microphone like the NT1 or you can actually directly in the middle of that combo jack plug in an instrument. Now for the demonstration today Michael will actually be playing us one of his original tracks that uses an acoustic guitar, vocals and also a bass guitar. Now while most of those sound sources will be recorded with the NT1 which is an incredibly flexible microphone to use in the studio we will definitely be using the instrument input to record the bass guitar signal. So the first control that you can see on the front there is actually the preamp volume control

 Now if we switch over to the other control on the right hand side of the interface this is actually your headphone output and your speaker output volume control. It controls both of those and I'll explain in a moment how that works. But first another really cool feature, if you press that knob in what it actually does is it enables direct zero latency monitoring. As soon as you press that button the signal from the preamp is actually routed straight to the headphone output so that when you're singing along to a track you can actually hear your vocal back without any latency at all
