The REI Flash 55 is an inexpensive, lightweight, and well-designed backpacking backpack. It weighs a mere 2.6 pounds. And, it can comfortably carry loads up to 30 pounds. The Packmod system enables you to customize the pack for your needs by moving or eliminating virtually all external pockets and straps. We particularly loved this feature. There are two "extra" side pockets between the water bottle pockets and the front stretch pocket. These extra pockets are super handy and a unique use of space, essentially doubling the external storage capacity. The side bottle pockets are the most easily accessible in the group, too. Since bottles go in vertically, there is no inference with arm swing. Because they sit low on the pack, water bottles can easily be removed and replaced with one hand. 
When you design a product to be lightweight, it's common for performance to suffer in another way. Lightweight packs are often more expensive, less durable, and less supportive. The Flash 55 does a great job of keeping the price low, but the durability and support issues are still true. We would try to avoid rubbing into rocks with this pack, or you may end up with some holes &#40;as we did&#41;. Some other concerns were some of the materials seemed a bit cheap like the mesh on the exterior pouch on the back. Not the worst for the money and REI stands behind their products

Some tips: go for a pack with well cushioned shoulder straps and hip straps. Make sure it has weight loaders to adjust your load. 

I currently have an Osprey Atmos 65 that I have been using for about 6 years now.  It weighs 78.72 oz which seems to be on the heavy side.  I am 53 y/o male, 6'3", weighing in at about 185 lbs and in good shape.  No back or joint issues.  I do like my comfort, but I'm getting tired of lugging around all the extra weight.

Lately, I've been considering buying a UL backpack to shed some weight but I am concerned with my perceived lack of comfort and stability of UL packs.  At first glance, the packs I have found look like a giant bulbus compression sack tied to your back with string that will cut off circulation and dramatically change the center of gravity of your body.

For those who switched from a traditional to UL backpack: 

1. What was your experience?
2. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
3. Do you switch back and forth between the two?  When and why?

What is your experience going from traditional backpack to ultralight backpack?

 I am 5'7 right about 165 pounds and this one fit just right. You want to make sure you get size, because this pack series does not allow for any adjustability in the shoulder straps or um. The waist belt so definitely go by and get fitted. I started off with the small and, although i could wear it, it just didn't

 Straps work the best and it's definitely not as padded as my osprey atmos, but on a recent 40 mile trip up at standing indian, i found it to be really comfortable. Also, the the waist belt has really adequate padding here. It'S not excessive, but it was plenty. The other thing i really like is this mesh material on the backing here between you and the the foam padding of the of the back pads there's about a inch indentation here between some some areas

 I did take the brain. I just can't get away from having extra pockets and places to put things it does have, what they call a weather, shield, coating or material that they're using and um. I didn't have any rain on this last trip, so i can't tell you how that is, but it would buy you a little bit of time before you able to stop and put on your rain cover, so all in all really pleased. There'S um! I like these big pockets on the sides

Use a bic lighter instead of the fire starter, invest in a quality sleeping pad with like a Nemo alpine (can use in winter) it’s way more comfortable than what you selected. Go with the Tungsten 2p tent, it’s a quality tent that will last. You don’t have to be ultralight but you should seriously take into consideration the weight of the items and more importantly the size of the items in making your decision on what to buy. You won’t need that whole cook set, it’s going to take up a lot of space

Howdy! As the title states, I am hoping to use REI's sale this year to get a decent budget friendly backpacking set up going. I have never once gone on a backpacking trip and the longest hike I have gone on is 7 or so miles. I live in the PNW, I am 5'11 and around 230 but hoping to shave off another ten pounds in the next month or two. I already have a decent pair of hiking boots and socks along with a nalgene. I certainly will need to get hiking clothes as well. I am hoping for a few simple 1-2 night trips over this summer to get into the groove of things. I think I have a semi decent list going, I am okay with spending $1k to $1.2k as I know this will see a lot of use. I picked the North Face One bag as I want to eventually be getting in some fall and winter trips and I imagine it will pay for itself in time.

As for the tent, how are Marmot tents? I see all of the REI tents have sold out since the sale had started. I don't really know what I am missing but I imagine its quite a bit. Is a Jetboil a half bad idea?

This is supposed to work where you take this loop it through like this, and the weight of it is gon na keep it there, but it sure does not work like that. I wish it was a buckle. A buckle would be nice or some other option

 The hip belt foaming and the back piece are all integrated in one um got a belt buckle for the straps up. Here, we've got a sternum, strap. We'Ve got two lift loaders hook here hook here. This is a medium size, i'm five five eight

REI Co-op Flash 55 Backpack Review

 This is a bag. I wish I could have kept. The reason I can't is that it comes in three torso sizes, small, medium and large, and the large torso size is only twenty inches tall. The thing that's worth noting is, if you look at the small, medium and large torso sizes they're one inch apart most other pack, manufacturers, their large torso size, goes up to 23 or 24 inches

 That leaves this large 57 liter pack weighing in at 2, pounds 4 ounces. Well, that's not the absolute lightest pack on the market. I feel like it's a very respectable entry for somebody, who's still looking for a framed backpack and can carry upward of 30 pounds at the volume of around 55 to 58 liters. Another feature I want to point out: are these these pockets right here on the side? So there are the big, the big side, pockets that you can put trekking poles or shelter or some other large tall item in so there's also these little mesh wing pockets - and these are perfect for water bottles

 Both of these materials are PU coated as well as DWR coated for extra durability. These zippers on the bag are from YKK The plastic hardware is from Juror Flex, and there is standard nylon webbing for all the straps. Starting from the front, the first thing you notice about this bag is this bungee cord system. Here, This is a higher tenacity bungee cord which is just good for lashing gear inside maybe a helmet or a thick jacket that you could just pop in through here and keep that secure during your hikes or your trails

Underneath that bungee cord system is a medium-sized Patagonia brand mark here and on the sides of the bungee cord system there is daisy chain webbing which is there to secure the bungee cord straps but also there for you to lash other gear on like a carabiner or a hereit clip. On the sides of the bag we have stretchy mesh water bottle pockets which are really good for fitting a number of different sized water bottles

 It'll be absorbed by that stuff a bit, so that's really helpful. What's also helpful is that this compartment can be used as a space for your hydration reservoir or hydration bladder. There is a little bit of tube porting here that you can put your tube through and it goes to the back panel of the bag and then you simply feed it through one of these accessory loops and then have hydration for a hike. And one main compartment for books etc and a smaller with a bunch of sleeves and pockets

Went to Rei , they did not have this one but he one below it $10 bucks cheaper. Nice bag but not enough for me so I ordered this one online and had shipped to store.  So this elastic cord that you have you can put it in there, strap it down, gives you a little bit of added stability. You also have some webbing up here on the front so you can clip your carabiner or any other things, and then you have a sternum strap right here across the center which you can move up and down right there that's also well done, and then from the front or the back you have this elastic cord for extra gear. It is adjustable so you can put your bike helmet on here, strap it in securely, or if you're wearing a jacket or a fleece sweater that you need to take off on a hike because it starts to warm up. You can also strap it right in here and tie it down with this bungee

 so this is a highly breathable mesh on the back panel and shoulder harness. so it's supposed to keep you comfortable all day. On the sides you have this stretch material which is done really nicely, then you just pop it out. It holds two large water bottles I've tried with a hydro flask

 For some of those bottles, they're a little bit taller. or maybe you put a tripod in here or an umbrella.  I put in a Macbook Pro 15 and it was fine. You also have this main compartment which zips down from the center so this main compartment is actually, uh, pretty roomy. It is also padded and you have a lined tablet sleeve so again, this part is padded. You can see the padding and you have some fleece inside to protect the screen, but on the inside notice how there's a bend right there or a fold so if you pop it out like this, it actually does add a significant amount of room
