The trusty REI Co-op Flash 22 stands out for its value in our Best Daypacks review. This is a lightweight and surprisingly comfortable minimalist daypack that makes it quite versatile as well. REI Co-op’s Flash line of daypacks has been a mainstay among hikers, travelers, and those on a budget for years. And with a recent update, the latest Flash 22 is more competitive than ever. Simplicity wins out here: The Flash 22 is frameless by design, meaning it lacks the rigidity of other daypacks but manages to keep weight extremely low at just 14 ounces (and even less if you take out the back pad or sternum strap). You don’t get a cushy hipbelt or shoulder straps, but the padded mesh along the back and shoulders does a good job at keeping you comfortable when carrying lighter loads. Perhaps most importantly, the Flash costs just $60, is well built overall, and has enough capacity for all-day outings on the trail (provided you pack relatively light).

As we touched on above, the Flash 22 was updated recently with some noteworthy changes. For an ounce more than its predecessor, the latest pack utilizes a nylon and polyester construction throughout (the prior model was just nylon with mesh water bottle pockets) with solution-dyed materials that require considerably less water during production. The top lid was also tweaked and now includes two buckles rather than one for snugging things down, and the Packmod bungee can be moved up or down to customize gear attachments. But some downsides remain: The Flash 22 isn't a standout in all-out comfort and support for shuttling a heavy load over long distances, materials are on the thinner end for rough use, and it’s only sold in one size. I hadn't planned to get the Flash, but after trying on a bunch, that one was the one that felt the best for me. If you're a beginner backpacker, you're probably hiking with some heavy and/or bulky gear, so it's even more important to get a comfortable pack that fits you properly (they'll measure you at the store).

Basically, in summer next year, I'm planning a hiking holiday, and I'm just wondering if anyone on here knows of any good (preferably frameless) hiking bags.

I do already have a bag which, if nothing else works (I can't include any info about it, unfortunately, as it was a gift, and, at least of the top of my head, I can't remember any details about it), but I'd just like to see what people recommend before I make any decisions.

Any Recommendations For A Hiking Bag That Will Be Used Over Multiple Days

 This is a technically a frameless back pack. It has no suspension system or aluminum or plastic or any kind of stiff frame in here. It does have a little bit of a thin foam piece, call it a back panel. You can actually open up the water bladder and pull this back panel out like so and this is basically is offering you a little bit of support on your back and what if you're out and about on your day hike? you can actually pull this out and just set it right on the ground, pop a seat on that

 The same goes for the adjustable strap. Down here. you simply pull in each of these sides to go ahead and get the proper fit that you're looking for. Also on the sternum strap here you also have a built in integrated whistle

 But if you do have the trekking poles attached to the package so you can't expect the pack is, sit up very nicely.  but I had to move on last year I threw hiked to the Appalachian Trail and at trail days I received a free pack from Gregory and this was at a lot of thru-hikers got them. This is one of their free giveaways and honestly perfect slack pack and that's primarily why they used it for on trails. Since then, I've kind of used it as my day pack since we're in quarantine and the staying home orders are still in place. Haven't been doing a ton of hiking so this has kind of served me as just a multi-purpose stuff sack

 really. as you can see, it doesn't have any outside pockets, so getting anything in and out of here is very difficult. There's no hip belt and that was really my chief complaint about this style pack was that I really enjoy putting things on the outside of my pack including my water bottles for easy access every time I want to drink or snack I would have to take the pack off, open it up, take the stuff out, etc etc. and that got tiresome

 New to this version, the pockets are tighter, they are taller, and they will prevent your water bottle from falling out which is exactly why I wanted a new pack. So for a little demonstration, I've brought my smart water bottle with my solar squeeze on top of it. now to show you what I'm talking about, I'm going to demonstrate what this bottle look like on my old REI So on my old REI pack, the side pocket wasn't very deep, it wasn't very secure, it wasn't very tight, and although on the side of the bag with the bottle with my Sawyer squeeze on it, I was able to cinch this down and secure it to the pack and it would never fall out. On the other side where my other bottle was, it didn't have a Sawyer squeeze on it

 It's definitely something that's right up my alley. So I'm super excited about it. I'm not going to talk a ton about the features of this pack today because I plan on doing an in-depth video about this pack and what? I pack for my date hikes, so stick around for that video. but today I really just wanted to focus on a couple of the key things that I was super excited about and why I purchased this pack

For flights, as “personal item” stowed under seat in front in economy, this has a better volume and extra useful features like the flap lid and exterior mesh pockets compared with the Flash 18...but the Flash 18 is a lot narrower and I can stick a foot on either side with the Flash 18 but not the Flash 22, which tends to hog all the under seat space

More space and features than Flash 18 but wider

THis is a great little backpack. Only giving it 4 stars because the zipper didn't work very smoothly. Otherwise, no complaints!

We walk away from the Rains Backpack with a few key take-aways, not least of which are the less-than-ideal shoulder straps and its fiddly adjustment, the subpar internal visibility for this black variant, and the interior pocket’s zipper that was prone to jamming. It’s not all bad, though, as we still think that the styling’s appeal still holds up.

Our experience with the harness system wasn’t the most comfortable—especially when the bag was heavily loaded. The thin straps offered no cushion and dug into our shoulders, making it tiresome to carry for long periods. Plus, the shoulder straps took time to re-adjust, requiring us to take off the entire pack whenever we needed to—a problem we seldom encountered in other backpacks with more typical strap adjusters.

Coming to the bottom of the shoulder straps, we seem to have a pretty old-school latch system here, that's very different to the typical pull and fast and ladder locks that are on most backpacks

 They both have the same features they both can fit up to a 13-inch laptop in their laptop sleeves. The main difference is their size and volume capacity. Obviously, the backpack is a bigger bag. At 13 liters in volume capacity, the backpack Mini, is a smaller bag

This bag is minimalist and waterproof, both of which I love. However, after a month or so of more or less daily use as an urban commuter, the material around the logo has started to peel off, revealing a lighter colored material beneath. I would have hoped it would last longer without getting damaged.
