Just got my Platinum Preppy today and loaded it up with my first Pelikan ink. The nib is stubbier than my Lamy Safari and requires me to write at a somewhat different angle, which threw me off slightly at first. It's something I will adjust to, though, since there is no "standard" nib (which is why we all love fountain pens in the first place). The medium nib is a bit broader stroke than my Safari (plus the Pelikan ink is SO WET) but that is also not a deal-breaker as I prefer a broader stroke

 Again, though, not going for pretty or sexy. I just want a decent writer that won't break the bank if it has to be replaced.  The price of the converter was more than the pen, but because it allows me to use whatever ink I want I have no complaints about that. My total cost for pen and converter was less than $15

  The sections fit together very well/tightly and the lid fits tightly has a little cup that helps seal the nib when closed. I'm hoping that it will be relatively easy to clean since things come apart nicely, though I suspect that this might not be the case from my initial experience priming and filling it. I'm not thrilled with the clear barrel, but I'm also not going for looks with this pen--I just want something I can keep in my backpack or purse that will write nicely and allow me to leave my more expensive pen on my desk at work. I do find the screen-printed information and barcode to be annoying since there is no way to remove it

Nice carry-with, daily-use pen

I've been on the search for a sleeker looking fountain pen from my reliable Preppy, preferably made of metal rather than plastic, but I'd like it for daily use as well as journal writing, and at a price point that doesn't have me too concerned if I misplaced it in class or at the library. I love the design of the Safari (sans the grip), but that incident has kept me away from getting too comfortable with it outside. I've been looking into the Twsbi ECO as an upgrade, and might get the Zebra V-301 but I've read it's not amazing.

 Due to an incident in class where the ink exploded over my hand, I've been wary to bring it with me back to the lecture hall. I've read also that Noodler's Black writes dry (in my limited experience, this is the case) paired with the Lamy Safari. I use the Safari mostly for penning long writings in my notebook, but since I do it infrequently, I find myself needing to change out the ink in the Safari since it's dried out since last use. Platinum's slip and seal mechanism is a useful tool since it keeps away ink evaporation

Otherwise, go back to ballpoint, but know that you really didn’t engage with fountain pen in the way that’s intended.

So I bought a cheap fountain pen Monami Olika extra fine for 3$ from my local convinient store. I was really excited about it cause I heard it's good. I know it's a cheap pen compared to other big brands like Pilot or Lamy. But I want to talk about the pen itself in general. 

First the way to hold the pen itself isn't really comfortable. I know that dynamic tripod is the best way to use it but for people like me who use triple quadrapod it isn't really comfy at all as you kinda push the pen too hard ( you can look it up) and I hate that you need to be at certain angle or sweet spot compared to normal ballpoint pen.

Second is the tip of the pen is really weak. I pushed my pen too hard and the small pointy point snapped leaving me with harsh point I feel like writing on a sand paper. I'm glad that I only bought beginner pen couldn't imagine myself broke 20$ pen.

Overall I think it's a great hobby for certain people but I couldn't even go through another fountain pen. I was thinking to use it to take note but I guess it wasn't really suitable. At first I thought I might invest more on the ink , syringe and better pen but I think it's the end for me. I really fond of the idea using the syringe to refill the catridge though.

TL;DR : FP isn't the most comfortable pen and tip isn't really strong. I'm not going to join the journey like other folks here even though I like the idea.

Bad experience with fountain pen

 I ordered a Lamy AL Star and what arrived was a Safari. At the outset, a true pen merchant is best - Dromgoole's, Goulet, Goldspot, Vanness, etc..

 The Safari, AL Star, and LX all have a triangular section grip; the Aion is circular. The TWISBI is triangular, too. The Platinum Plaisir is a nice one - very light in weight, but looks elegant. Satisfying snap when it's capped

Help for getting a fountain pen gift.

 Cheap. So, why just three stars--especially when I'm a fan of cheap fountain pens? Because this pen is so utilitarian in appearance and handling, it removes all romance from the writing experience. If Jinhao and Gullor and a bunch of Indian (even Pakistani) pen companies weren't putting out gorgeous pens for the same price, this would be a five-star pen. But you can get luscious pens that feel like fine tools and write, honestly, like Meisterstucks, for the same price

I would say no to the Van Gogh, only because it really doesn't feel that amazing in hand. It is my most expensive pen to date and I much prefer my Pelikan m205 over it, which I got for a little over half the price. I would say if you want a Visconti, either go big or go home because the lower end models just aren't worth their price tag. Gold nib pens really depend on your preference

 Do you prefer wet, smooth, feedbacky, somewhat dry, small, large, combination of these? My favorite is the Pilot e95s, but not everyone likes small pocket pens.

I’ve been looking at Sailor’s 1911s for awhile, and Goulet just got in a gorgeous new model.  My question is, therefore, are they worth it? Are there other gold-nib pens I might consider?

I’m also toying with a Visconti Van Gogh because I’ve wanted a Visconti forever, but that’s a steel nib.

 the cap thread is in the way - I am talking about the threads around the writing grip area, it hasn't bothered me so far, but i noticed it's there - it could be a problem for some with larger hand.  Overall, I'm happy with the purchase, and would recommend it.
