The cooking chamber on most grills is constructed of stainless steel, cast iron, or porcelain. The PK360 Grill + Smoker is composed of aluminum. The primary benefit of aluminum is that the metal is rustproof. PK has been around since 1952, and they like to boast that they produce grills that will be cooking for several generations. Aluminum also conducts heat extremely efficiently. With some very well-placed vents on the lid and bottom of the tub, we found that this model offers a high degree of control. The grill grate is hinged, allowing you to add woodchips and coals while you are cooking food. The PK360 was designed with portability in mind. The side tables and lid can be easily removed, and the grill comes off of the stand &mdash; all without the use of tools. If you don't want to use the stand, the bottom of the tub has been designed to sit flat on tables without it.

 Before we begin, for all you fellow barbecue geeks out there, let me set the scene with a quick backstory to the evolution of PK grills. In the early 1950s, Hilton Maggs of Tyler, Texas made what many considered to be the perfect charcoal barbecue grill.  Hi there, Matt here. Today we're going to look at the PK360 Grill and Smoker.

 I know there are plenty of reviews out there on the PK360, but I thought I'd offer my take on it.

 For the record, I haven't been paid, bribed or coerced in any way into making this video.

 I'm just a barbecue enthusiast with a love of cooking over smoke and fire and an appreciation for good design.

 I bought the PK360 online without seeing one up close in person from the good people at Pro Smoke Barbecue.

 So I recommend you go and check them out.

 Now, if like me, you live miles from your nearest PK dealer, definitely keep watching as I'll give you a detailed overview and a closer look at the PK360.

 Before we begin, for all you fellow barbecue geeks out there, let me set the scene with a quick backstory to the evolution of PK grills.

 In the early 1950s, Hilton Maggs of Tyler, Texas made what many considered to be the perfect charcoal barbecue grill.

 He designed and manufactured a cast aluminium grill and smoker, calling it the Portable Kitchen, and sold it out of the back of his car in the American Mid-South.

 The company was purchased from Maggs in 1958 and manufacturing moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, where it remained until fire and business issues stopped production in the mid-1970s.

 No PK grills were produced for nearly three decades, but the durability of this charcoal grill ensured that thousands still existed in perfect working order.

 Then in 1998, local attorney and grill enthusiast Paul James discovered a portable kitchen charcoal grill and smoker at a yard sale.

 He was so impressed by the grill and smoker, he purchased the Portable Kitchen name and began producing sparkling new aluminium PK grills from castings of the original product.

 Almost 45 years to the day after the first portable kitchen grill popped out of its mould in Tyler, Texas, PK was back in business in Little Rock with the PK grill and smoker.

 In 2016, PK embarked on a journey to again make the best outdoor cooker money could buy.

 The PK360 grill and smoker is the result of several years of design and development and over 60 years of outdoor grilling excellence.

 Now let's dive in and take a closer look at the PK360.

 As I purchased my PK online, it was shipped on a pallet in two separate boxes.

 Feel free to check out my unboxing and assembly videos.

 Right out of the box, this thing is solid. The quality and engineering of the PK360 is very impressive.

 The cooking capsule is formed out of a top and a lower cast shell.

 These are precision injected moulded cast aluminium, finished to a high level and feel reassuringly heavy.

 Aluminium is not only light and durable, it conducts heat two and a half times more efficiently than cast iron and four times more than steel.

 This means that heat is distributed more evenly throughout the cooking capsule.

 I felt no rough edges, just smooth, precision cast aluminium.

 Rather than the circular design as seen with traditional kettle style grills, the PK360 is more of a rounded rectangle.

 This allows for a two zone cooking configuration without needing to insert ceramic dividers to block or channel heat as with some other grills.

 The hinge design securing the top and lower casting is simple but very secure and enables you to easily remove the top if needed and does away with a separate hinge mechanism.

 The PK360 has a four point venting system for precision air control and heat management.

 This is ideal for both direct and indirect cooking.

 On the top shell you have twin radial vent exhausts and a twin cylinder air intake system on the lower shell.

 This is a great system especially coupled with the Teltru thermometer which allows you to easily dial in your perfect cooking temperature.

 For over 100 years Teltru manufacturing has established a reputation for producing thermometers that are the world standard for quality workmanship and accuracy.

 There's a hefty marine grade stainless steel charcoal grate and a huge 360 square inch marine grade stainless steel cooking grill.

 This has a removable hinge access section which helps with refuelling.

 Marine grade stainless steel is more resistant to rusting and pitting compared to regular stainless steel.

 The cooking surface is 24.8 by 15.8 inches which is more than enough for most purposes.

 If you're feeling greedy and want to load things up you can also add a cook more rack which sits on the PK grill.

 The shelves are vast and feel very stable and secure formed from high-end engineered glass fiber reinforced polyester material.

 These are highly heat resistant super durable and easy to clean.

 The shelves slide into the shelf mount tabs on the lower shell and three quick release ball screws secure them in place.

 The control tower base is very stable with adjustable stability pads for slightly uneven surfaces and two small wheels for maneuverability.

 I personally would have liked to have seen more substantial wheels such as little mini off-road tires.

 Maybe that's a mod I'll try in the future.

 Now there's tasteful branding all over this thing from the PK logo on the top of the capsule.

 The lower shell features the portable kitchen pig logo cast on the housing for the upright control tower.

 Another great practical design feature is the stainless steel accessory bar running along each of the shelves.

 They not only look good they're great for hanging your barbecue tools or your chef's towel on.

 There are two carry handles positioned under the shelves.

 Remove the shelves, undo the quick release control tower knob and the capsule simply lifts off.
