 that would be that it's It's very light, so if you want to carry this thing around, if you like light pens, this is about as light as it gets. Pilot E95S Fountain Pen Overview

 Even then, not all of those pens are worth the price. Montblancs from around the 80s onward are just an average pen with a logo, Visconti have absolutely wank-arse quality control and customer support and Lamy are charging £500 for a 2000 because 'hehe it's brown', meanwhile Pilot is producing the objective cheapest gold nibbed pen out there (the E95S, my first gold-nibbed pen), Platinum make the Preppy, which is dirt cheap and a very competent writer and multiple companies produce very good value for money school fountain pens for under £10.  

I'm happy for anyone who derives joy from their pens no matter their price! I'm just curious because when I see mentions of 'grail pen' or even 'favorite daily drivers', a lot of pens I see are at $200+ range. There are the 'newbie' pens of course, but I don't see a whole lot of in between. Is it possible to feel satisfied that you don't need an 'upgrade' at below $100 range? Or is the hobby destined to take everyone to a higher and higher budget eventually, because more expensive pens are simply better writers? (I wouldn't actually know -- is this true? where's the intersection between good writing experience coming from the pen's functionality and its cap price limit?)

Anyone cap out at beneath $100?

I would not recommend the e95s for fidgeting. The cap is very lightweight and while it's sturdy for my use, the friction fit will eventually wear down if you keep capping and uncapping and the metal for the cap is something you can easily crush by stepping on it. Honestly, with your fidgeting I would definitely recommend something like an aluminum pen, I know Kaweco makes aluminum versions of their pens and you can buy a gold nib to replace the steel nib if that's what you want. I don't think there are any resin pens that can withstand your fidgeting and most metal pens are not lightweight

After buying, using, breaking, and neglecting many fountain pens I now have a pretty strong idea of what I like and what I don't: 

\- I tend to fidget with pen caps and clips subconsciously. If these parts are not durable, they will break within a matter of weeks (generally through resin snapping, or clips coming loose to a point where they can't be readjusted). 

\- Fine with either piston fill or C/C. Tend to naturally use cartridges over converter though for ink capacity and convenience. 

\- Needs to be short and lightweight for me to use it for any extended period of time. Anything around 30g is basically unusable for me, and I find the 10-20g range most comfortable. A posted Lamy safari looks comically huge for me to be using. 

After doing some research with these criteria, the only pens I can find that meet them are the pilot decimo (metal body and can't break a cap if there is no cap although this means I might start fidgeting with the clicker), and the pilot e95s (do both the black and burgundy versions have the metal cap)?  

Are there any concerns with these pens that I haven't thought of? Are there any other pens that you think might fit the bill?

Gold nib, lightweight, short, workhorse pen with durable cap and clip?

 With the cap posted, the pen is balanced and is long enough to fit comfortably in most peoples hands.Small hands might get away with not posting the cap.  The only downside is that because the cap is so long, if for some reason ink leaks out while the nib is capped, the ink gets all over most of the body of the pen, especially where you grip the pen with your fingers. Stray ink is easy enough to clean off the slick body, but might get all over your fingers

 At the price of this pen at the time of this review, I think this is a must; cheap price(relatively) for a gold nib, really relaible writer, beautiful design and funcionality as well. I was going to buy a M400 but decided I had to get this since I already have a M200 and I wasn't dissapointed.

Awesome pen

Impeccable build quality.  Great balance, sprung clip, comfortable to hold for short and long writing sessions, nice medium flow, the 14k nib is actually quite bouncy, and the cap/uncap feel is awesome.  Between this and the pilot vanishing point, I'm going with the e95s svery time.  I love the EF for everyday writing on bad paper, it's insanely smooth and nice and medium flowing

 I'm going to ink it up and I usually keep the same ink in it all the time. And one thing I do have to say is it does have you know, a rather small little converter in it and when you move the piston back and forth you can't actually see how much ink will be in the in the converter. You could take it out and maybe eye drop. You know, use a syringe to fill the converter to get a full full full converter fill

 Um, this is probably if I had to make a hard choice and cut my collection down to say a couple pens, this would be in it. This would be the one of the ones I would keep. It's the Pilot E95s and it's a really lovely design. Um, I, I know I go on about Twisby and Lommy all the time, but really, Pilot makes some of the nicest fountain pens out there

I'm sorry if this becomes a bit rambly, and I know these things are often very subjective, but I'm looking to the wider experience of the masses for opinions.

I have only two pens: ye olde Pilot Metropolitan and the ubiquitous Lamy Safari. I'm a big fan of how they both write, though I prefer the metro for every day as I like a bit of **heft**.

I'm ready for the next step, and I have a few pens on my list, though several of these are out of reach (or stock) at the moment. These include: Faber-Castell Loom and Kaweco Liliput. I've also often looked longingly at the various TWSBI's around as well, but every time I come close to pulling the trigger, I think, "but won't it feel plasticky and cheap?" And then I talk myself out of it.

I'd also be curious about anyone's experiences between, vacuum or piston vs a normal cartridge/converter thing. I'm a bit useless and generally only clean my pen when I'm changing inks (don't kill me please). I can change!

Basically what I'm asking is what's a good next step? I would like something that looks special or has a real point of difference; I'm not really interested in a more expensive do-over of the pens I already have. I don't have a giant budget (and this is difficult to translate, as some pens that are cheap for those of you in the USA are not necessarily cheap here in NZ) But I'll look into everything.

I need help with my next pen! (Excuse the lengthiness)

 Additionally, the ink capacity on the Kaweco has never been a problem for me, as it always got me through at least a whole day of college notes with the EF nib.

I'm looking into getting a decent FP and have narrowed it down to these two. I am wondering what yalls' experience with these pens is.

What is your experience with the Kaweco Sport and/or the TWSBI Eco.

 The price for such a good fountain pen is unreal. Pens of similar writing quality made in Germany, Italy, or Japan cost 2 and 3 times as much.

A Very Good Pen

5 ultraflex in TWSBI 580 and it just didn't work - the inkflow wasn't there. Every #6 nib I placed into PenBBS struggled to function (and taking out the feed each time was a literal pain I do not want to repeat again). I bought Lamy nibs by mistake and don't even want to start down the Lamy road, so I'm leaving those untouched. I still love all the pens I have, but for future purchases, I think I'll stick strictly to the pens that take #5 or #6 Jowo nibs without much of a struggle in the feed
