 There is still the glaring and unforgiveable problem of how when a piece of lead is about used up the last few centimeters get stuck in the tip, outside the advancer, so you have to pull it out. This is absurd and ridiculous, and so many pencils still do this. The pentel eSharp is pretty good at keeping lead alive longer, but it's an even cheaper pencil and rather unattractive.  I can't give the product five stars because the old adage "don't fix what ain't broke" doesn't apply here: there are some big improvements that should be being made about pencils, and unfortunately Pentel is resting on its laurels

The classic needs a revision

For math, engineering and accounting type documentation I typically use the trusty Pentel P205 in 0.5mm. Now while HB is a pretty soft lead, the trick is to not advance / expose too much lead out of the ferrule so it doesn't break. A mechanical pencil takes a softer touch in general, but it leaves a good dark line which is also easily erasable

I'm looking for recommendations for .5mm lead for doing a lot of math. I prefer having some roughness when I write because I like the tactile feedback instead of having a pencil that just glides smoothly across the paper. Suggestions?

What are your guys' favorite pencils/ lead grades for doing math?

I weighed the parts of some Pentel P205 pencils, from Gen 3 to modern. The weight of most parts has decreased over the years. The weight of the caps on the older models is going to be a little heavier because they contain a metal cap stop inserted (this was removed in the modern pencils in favor of a step cut into the mechanism).

P205 weight changes over the years

3 translucent green, and Pentel P205 metallic purple...3 best makers, 3 best sizes, 3 nice colours, all for 50 bucks

Rotring 600 0.7 black, Pilot S3 0.3 translucent green, and Pentel P205 metallic purple.

I'd probably get a GraphGear 1000, a Rotring 600 and a Uni Ball Kuru Toga.

IMO the Rotring is too expensive at that price point. You can get a Rotring 600 for $30, which is practically the same pen without the retractable tip. I prefer to find pens with the LEAST amount of moving parts so there's a decreased risk of mechanical failure.

Like the title says I'm looking at getting my first expensive pen, that also has some quality refill options available. I don't know much about refills, so hoping with the pen recs i can search here for their refills.

 I've found the rOtoring 800 (61$ on jetpens) and the TI Click ($100 on jetpens) are my current choices. I have a strict 125$ before tax limit on whatever I buy. I'm looking for a click pen, I've never used a bolt pen, but can be considered. Since i need a one handed pen, job reqs, twist, cap are out of the ring. 
 
I like the 800 for it's retractable tip and it seems to have some good refills available ( however, i haven't tested, tried, or researched them that much)

I'm used to writing with the Papermate ink joy, which i adore for it's simple structure, easy rubber grip, and ink. For a pencil i use the GG1000 which sometimes i find has a small grip.

First expensive pen, I'm looking to dig in and buy a good pen with many refill options

I have average size hands (maybe a tad larger than average) for a guy and this pen feels tiny. So tiny it hurts my hand to write with for a while. Also, as others have stated, it clicks everytime you lift and place down because the cartridges do not have a good fit inside the pen. The actuall metal body build quality is very nice, but I will not be using it as it is uncomfortable to write with

 It lacks heft, the clicking mechanism is spongy, overall it just isn’t the same.  Do yourself a favour, scour eBay for an original, they were just better.

 It has an excellent balance, very hefty, good grip section, good click mechanism, and a very cool aesthetic. I would strongly recommend this over the Rotring Rapid Pro as I find that pen a bit too long and it has a plastic piece connecting the grip and barrel.  Pros: 1. Excellent construction Coated Brass, very few plastic parts

This is an excellent ballpoint. While it does lack a few things the older model 600s had like the twist top to indicate color. it is a hefty, strong every day carry pen.  This pen may have been a little pricey for a ballpoint, but the quality and construction are there to make it worth it

NOT THE ORIGINAL, BUT STILL EXCELLENT AND ONE OF MY FAVORITE BP PENS

I’ve owned a few of these over the years and they are straight to the point, (no pun intended) sturdy, reliable, comfortable and look sharp, not bulky at all, physically the same size as a disposable Bic pen. For the price, if you use a ballpoint pen for work regularly, this is probably the last pen you need to buy (as a normal not-flashy person)
