 It felt sturdy and I could definitely tell that Peloton paid attention to the details. I've tried a ton of bikes for my apartment, gym and cycling classes like Soulcycle and this is up on another level. But that could be said for any home exercise equipment. The bigger draw with Peloton was the built-in competitive element of it: seeing that leaderboard somehow did make me pedal harder. And despite being alone in my living room, it effectively simulated a “real” cycling class, for lack of a better description. I’ve always liked group sports or races for the intangible energy that’s generated from a bunch of people all trying to achieve the same physical thing, and I was skeptical that Peloton could provide that

 It’s nicely constructed and, at 135 pounds, so heavy that I needed help moving the bike around my apartment. This is not something you assemble at home, either. It requires in-home delivery, a process I went through twice because the first Peloton that was delivered physically locked up when I started riding it. The second unit’s pedals worked like they were supposed to

 We bought this bike ourselves and we pay monthly for the service as well. and I will say we've been very happy with the Peloton bike. It's held up very well over the year. It's still super smooth, so it is a very good, albeit overpriced piece of equipment

I’ve seen several posts in the last couple days where someone just getting into cycling asks a frustrated question about their rate of improvement and how it’s affecting their love for this sport and someone else share’s Greg’s quote “It never gets easier; you just go faster.”  I just want to clarify to the new and frustrated riders that if continually going faster is not your goal, it does get easier and your hard work will definitely pay off.  It’s hard for anyone on a bike just getting into it, but after a while you’ll find that the miles do get easier.  I definitely wouldn’t have kept riding if I had to suffer every time I touched my bike like I did just starting out.

The Madone is a bit heavy and getting the handlebars on is expensive. If you are not sure on clip on aerobars, a TT bike is not an option at all.

I have been trying to improve the time of my bike sessions. The ride portion of the triathlon seems to be the most resistant to improvements. This morning I did an Olympic brick, the ride and the run. I improved the times for both sessions since my last full Olympic Triathlon training session. 

I know that I am getting fitter as I train and as I modify my diet to eat more whole foods. I knocked 14 minutes on the 40 km ride. I mostly attribute this decrease in time to my posture. I concentrated on a more bent-over style of riding to reduce wind resistance. Trying to ride in a bent over position on a Cannondale Quick Touring bike with a straight across handlebar c/w ergonomic grips at the end is a bit of a challenge. I found that my upper body was quite stressed by forcing my posture into a bent-over position. One benefit of forcing myself to ride in this position was that I noticed less wind resistance if I kept my elbows tucked to my side.

The purpose of this post is to seek feedback on how best to upgrade my ride. I realise that if I truly want to improve my bike times, I need to get another bike. The Cannondale is an all-weather, all year-round bike. I have the good fortune to live in the pacific north-west coast in Canada so I can ride year round.

My original thought was to add a clip-on aero-style handlebar to the Cannondale, but quickly dropped that idea given the installation challenges and the risk for me, an older rider, of suddenly switching to an aero-style handlebar. I am now looking at performance-style bikes. I don't think I should risk my life switching to a true tri-style bike. I also cannot afford the price point for these types of bikes.

One bike I looked at online this morning is the Trek Emonda SL 6 Disc bike. I have ridden disc-style mountain bikes so I am familiar with this type of breaking system. The Cannondale has pad-style breaks. I simply want to ride faster while I train. At this point, I have no plans to compete in an triathlon race. I am currently trying to do a full 70.3 training session, but my bike riding time for the 90km ride is really slow, considerably above the average for my age group.

To simplify the purchase strategy, I have decided that the road surface that I will ride on will be either paved on hard-packed crushed gravel. I will also not ride the new bike in the rain. Also, because of my age, I can realistically expect to be pushing the envelop for another decade. I also feel that a new bike will help me keep motivated. I am just having so much fun trying to be a triathlete.

What should I be looking for in a more performance-oriented bike? My height puts me into a 58-frame. I bought my Cannondale in 2011, 10 years of bike manufacturing science has quickly gone by. I am a bit over my head in terms of knowing what features are essential and what features are nice-to-have.

I want a faster ride.

 That means you can do this down from the drops or up on the hoods, and these are going to be a hydraulic, brake setup operating two piston calipers on the front and the rear with 160 millimeter rotors keeping the bike rolling very aerodynamic is going to be The bontrager aeolus comp 5 wheels. These are an aluminum rim with a carbon fiber fairing. So that means this top piece here. Where you see the seam is aluminum carbon fairing for the aerodynamic purposes and then they're hosting some bontrager r3 tires
