 You had these on both sides of the bag on the other side of the bag. I just have my sunglasses: just above the water bottle, pockets are compression straps. These compression straps are good for bringing the load of the bag closer to your body so that you have a better center of gravity when you're carrying. There is also a little bit of elastic webbing to help you tidy up that strap slack, which is helpful, a little tip with these compression straps

 There is this air mesh wicking, which is on the shoulder, strap and back panel, which will provide extra comfort and breathability on your hikes on the shoulder straps. There are two accessory loops here for adding additional gear. Here we have the Patagonia p6 logo, which is a nice touch coming a bit further down on the shoulder strap there is an adjustable sternum strap that sternum strap has two points of adjustment on this strip of daisy chain webbing. Here, where you can properly align the sternum strap to where your sternum is on your body

 So you have less of a chance of that gear, falling out it's a little bit of a tip for you coming to the harness system of the bag. We have a very well padded and breathable shoulder, strap and back panel.  I put in a Macbook Pro 15 and it was fine. You also have this main compartment which zips down from the center so this main compartment is actually, uh, pretty roomy. It is also padded and you have a lined tablet sleeve so again, this part is padded. You can see the padding and you have some fleece inside to protect the screen, but on the inside notice how there's a bend right there or a fold so if you pop it out like this, it actually does add a significant amount of room

  2) My old North Face Recon had a big front mesh pocket that you could stuff a whole jacket/fleece/jeans/etc in there. I looked at reviews here and elsewhere for months before I finally replaced a 12 year old EMS bag. Bought the North Face Surge 2. Decent pack but very "stiff" is the only way I can put it. I needed something:  Big enough to take 2 lunches, a change of clothes, a sweater, laptop, cords, kindle and other odds and ends with me to work nearly every day on my 60 mile commute via train bus and subway

 Only had it a month so can't speak to longevity but it seems durable, but without the stiffness of some other bags.  It doesn't have the easy airport pocket feature that many bags advertise, but personally I didn't want that as I rarely ever fly and found the extra pocket feature just added bulk and is useless when I'm not travelling with a laptop - like on the weekend hiking. The laptop IS very well protected though in the dedicated internal sleeve. Well cushioned on all edges and sides and the bottom of the laptop sleeve is cushioned and "elevated" a bit off the base of the main bag compartment so if you put the bag down hard you're fine
