 I would say it carries best when filled with lightweight, high-volume items such as clothing/shoes.

- I wish there was a chest or abdomen strap. While it felt secure on my back, even when fully packed, it would have been nice to have an additional strap for stability and comfort.

- Because the laptop compartment is part of the "lid," it can make unpacking/taking things out kind of a drag. With the laptop inside, it weighs down one side of the duffel which makes packing difficult. Still, it's nice to have this compartment.

- The laptop compartment, while thin, still felt secure because it is sandwiched between your back and the rest of your stuff

Comfortable and Functional

 It was very surprisingly nice. The biggest comparison is that it is lighter overall, the backpack straps are designed better with easy to unclip and stow away internally and great internal dividers. Kept things nice and flat from horizontal to verticals (duffle to backpack carrying modes) which is nice to not have all your stuff smooshed around when traveling. But one of the little sneaky nice features is it’s shape and structure

 And this Northface I took to Maui and liked it better. I wanted to use the Patagonia black hole  duffle but decided to try this out. It was very surprisingly nice. The biggest comparison is that it is lighter overall, the backpack straps are designed better with easy to unclip and stow away internally and great internal dividers

Skeptical converted

Usually when a bag is described as fitting a 15" laptop you can also fit a 16" MacBook Pro, but this is not the case for this bag. It's a great bag otherwise, but I'll have to return it since my computer doesn't fit.

 We even appreciate the bit of tarpaulin covering the top half of the straps to protect them from rain. 

There’s also a dedicated laptop compartment, though we have our reservations about it. It’s the side-opening pocket along the main compartment’s flap, and it has a fair amount of padding for protection. The trouble is, this flap also doubles as the Base Camp Voyager’s back panel when it’s in backpack mode. Unfortunately, the amount of padding is not enough, and it feels like our laptop is acting as the frame sheet and is part of the bag’s structure—not ideal since that would make it an exceptionally expensive frame sheet

One of the key features of the Base Camp Voyager is its ability to compress into one of its pockets. The pocket in question is the side pocket—that’s the bottom one when you have it in backpack mode—and what The North Face did here is rather clever.

 First, i'm going to fold in the sides here because i find that it just keeps everything a little bit tighter on the sides and then i'm just going to roll it as tightly as i can. We'Ve got the straps tucked away on the inside too. Then there you go, you have a little mesh pocket on the outside here, a little key clip and then you've got a handle to where you can carry it around. So there you have it

 I mean there's a decent amount of padding, but there's really no structure and that's just like against my back. So i don't really love that just pulling that out again the most expensive frame sheet, you can buy right here, macbook pro, so i don't really love that about this type of bag. Now you can see there is a little bit of padding. I don't know it's kind of hard to see on video, but just to show you there is some reinforcement there, but i just i don't love putting my laptop in bags like this

 I think that's nice over all, okay, so it's completely empty. Now i want to fold this thing into itself, which is a little bit challenging, so i'm going to roll it up. First, i'm going to fold in the sides here because i find that it just keeps everything a little bit tighter on the sides and then i'm just going to roll it as tightly as i can.  Most often, while i was testing it, i was just sticking it in the main compartment. Let me close this back up and now i just want to talk about these straps and they do they. They can hinder access. So if i'm, you know unzipping, you got to kind of always go under that strap and then it kind of becomes

 From our experience, if you're leaning between the smaller L & the 62, then we wish we would have gone with the smaller size.

 The inner divider flap also doesn't stay secure, so we had to figure out our own way to loop the ties together. Another common complaint people seem to have & that we agree with his the shoulder strap placement, I wish they were attached to the actual bag vs the zippered top flap, though being able to tuck the shoulder straps when not in use is very nice. From our experience, if you're leaning between the smaller L & the 62, then we wish we would have gone with the smaller size.

I love this bag! I use it to travel and it fits perfectly in overhead bins, is comfortable to carry and it doesn't look like I have a turtle shell on my back ready to knock someone over. The only semi downside, but it might be user error, I don't know what to do with the duffle straps when I'm carrying it as a backpack if my bag is very full. I let it hang on the sides, but I got worried it was going to get caught on something so then I attached the straps so that it would be on my back, it wasn't uncomfortable, but I could definitely feel it. Overall it is my favorite back and I absolutely love it! I can't wait to take it on more trips!

 I use this to go to the gym at the office I work at, and it is incredibly utilitarian. I do wish that the laptop pocket was larger, as it is not big enough to accommodate my 15" work laptop, and I have to store it in the pocket that the backpack straps are stored in.
