Based on other reviews as well as the tech specs of this pack I bought this for my 10 yr old who had a variety of adventures this summer! She used this as her carry-on for a trip to Southeast Asia - carried all her on-the-plane activities and then became her day-pack for day trips as well as her 'suitcase' for a 5 day river trip in Sarawak. She then used it as a full-bore backpack on our back-country trip in Glacier. She was able to carry her sleeping bag, crazy creek chair, and some clothes in the main compartment as well as various daily needs e.g

Great for kids beginning backpacking pack!

 Success!!! Reference child is 46 inches and weighs about 50lbs and the adjustments are at the minimum, construction is good, should last him a couple of years just long enough to break in my second child ;-)  Remember, when introducing children to backpacking start short, keep the pack light (rule of thumb keep the pack under 20% of their body weight), take frequent breaks and above all have fun!  Happy trails!

First off, this pack is kind of expensive for a kids pack but it is the only pack that I found that has a suspension system.  It keeps the weight off my boy's shoulders and puts it where it belongs, on his hips. He was using a school type backpack before I bought him this and with 5-8lbs would tell me his shoulders hurt after about a mile or two.  Since using this we've been on a few 4-6 mile hikes and I don't hear anything about sore shoulders with about 10lbs

Bummed no LARGE option

 I typically don't use these, but it does have a very interesting thing. Uh which, it has a uh, a carrier for your hiking pole. So for whatever reason, if you're not using your hiking poles, uh, you can actually just put these directly into this little metal. uh, grommet here

 Uh, and then they typically retail for around 79 at Rei, but I caught it on a sale you know, at some point and I think I got it for around 55 when I bought it and it's been an excellent pack for that price. So anyway, hope that was helpful. Enjoy and have a great day.

REI Trail 25 Backpack Review

I recently purchased this model and am pleased with it, especially the wider top of the main zipper. However, I am unhappy with two features that were removed. One is the side zipper pocket on the side with only one layer of mesh for waterbottle. It was very helpful to me for stowing things I wanted easy access to, but didn't want to be in a hip pocket or top pocket where clumsy use or a haphazard set-down may cause harm to them

 Especially, it was great for my phone! I also really, really miss the hooks on the top straps outside the top pocket. They were replaced with plastic strap adjustors, which work fine, but are somewhat less versatile. For example, I could use the hook straps to quickly and easily strap a climbing rope to the top of my bag, and now it takes me several minutes to slide the cumbersome rope under the straps.

Loved the old model, like the new model ok.

 I also liked it because it's really light and it fits a ton of gear in here. so it weighs about a the same as my old Camelback 14 or it's about 2 pounds, 13 or 14 ounces. but it fits 40 liters instead of 24 liters which is impressive. So I Use this from everything from just like a regular hike to a weekend overnight hike or a two day overnight hike

 but the one I liked more and more over time was this REI Trail 40 which is right here REI is you know making better and better gear and they kind of take the best of the other packs and put it in there and it's really well-thought-out and you can tell this has been tested. They actually do like crowdsource testing so with their employees and some select hikers will give you know a test model of this backpack to them and let them try it and get feedback on it and kind of hone it and you can tell it's well thought out because everything has a purpose. Everything's works right. So like the hip belts on this on one of the Ospreys that I had, you couldn't even get into it

 and it can carry everything and you can fit everything inside. and you can also use these straps on the outside. The strap on like a sleeping bat, pad or bag or tent and you've got fun stuff. So let me walk you through the features
