You'll be more comfortable and all your stuff will remain dry. The plus side is that this was a very comfortable pack to wear when dry and my shoulders never became too sore over the course of the day. It was easy to control comfort by alternately tightening and loosening the waist belt so that the hips take more or less of the load.

- I love this harness on this size of bag, but the CPL24 harness is by far the more comfortable of the two.

My dad went the opposite direction - he started out with an "ultralight" pack (Osprey Exos 38 IIRC) and eventually went with an Atmos 65. He just carried too much stuff for an ultralight pack. He didn't care much for high daily mileage, the walking part of backpacking is a necessary evil in his mind to get to the backcountry camps for fishing and generally relaxing. Trying to stuff all of his junk into a smaller pack with limited support wasn't much fun, so he got a bigger pack and he enjoys backpacking much more

5' here as well. Even normal womens' backpacks (and pants) don't account for people on the shorter end of the height range, so those options might still not be great.

Now if you were going to be doing that, you would definitely have to be very careful with how you pack it, how much gear you take, how much food you p...

For what it's worth, my torso length is closer to 15", which makes sense because I find most 17" torso backpacks to be too tall. 16.5" means most hiking backpacks in Small would fit you decently well, a lot of men's stuff starts at 17" or so and the women's stuff is 16". All of the hiking bags I mention here are adjustable to "very short" so quibbling about the specifics doesn't matter though

Highly recommenced! Get them before they are gone, Osprey has discontinued this model for some unknown/Stupid reason. Why you discontinue your best product is beyond me. Bring it back, and with more color/custom options! Id buy three just on principle.

- NO dedicated laptop padding or pocket (a thin stretch pocket in the main compartment is fine, but no added bulk for a laptop I won't be carrying)

I like compression straps because I do travel on budget airlines, but also... I dunno, something about making my bag *that much smaller* is pleasing to my brain somehow?! Maybe I just like the physical act of pulling the straps, lol
