  I've seen solutions like this, never on a $10 knife though.  As for the locking mechanism, I think they really hit the nail with this one, it happens automatically as the knob is spring loaded and you never have to think about it.  My advise, if you're an occasional user who's not relying on the knife for heavy duty work, buy it and you won't regret it.  If you're a pro user, there are other solutions out there that are sturdier and more efficient, but not for $10

Great Knife, Good buy - but...

Used one of these knives for a long while and bought a second on Amazon for a backup/lender unit. Right way noticed that the molded plastic blade holder on the new unit was loose but did not worry about it. First week on the job, the blade and plastic holder fell out on job somewhere, couldn't find it, $10 down the drain because too late to return. If your little black plastic blade holder doesn't click in sharp and tight, return right away

Sturdy, well-designed utility knife; Locking mechanism not for heavy-duty use.

This is definitely on the hefty side. I like that because it stays in the office and it makes it feel substantial in your hand. Depending on your use case this may be a negative. The deploy/retraction mechanism is smooth and solid

The Gransfors Small Splitting Axe can be used for medium-sized firewood. It is forged and ground to a concave, quite thin blade at the bit.  I like a knife like this, because I don't need something crazy, heavy and tactical and super duty that I can pound through. It's soft and will age well after continue care and applying leather conditioner oil.  The handle seems very strong, tightly grained hickory with excellent orientation.  I find working with it to be pure joy. I'll grant that it is expensive, but in this case I think you get what you pay for. I would buy it again in a heartbeat

Great Little Axe

 I use this ax nearly every single day. It’s an ideal size for having near a wood stove or furnace. I have mine in a small corridor next to my wood stove that’s used to hold wood pre-burn. The ceiling is low (about 6’4”) due to ductwork

 If you’re looking for something that you can handle and will occasionally split small amounts of timber you’ll want this. Worth every penny.

 The strap is too long and causes the sheath to come loose when hiking or any kind of movement is involved. I contacted both Kenco and Gransfors in order to remedy this situation but have not heard from them in over 9 days. This is truly unfortunate because, though my experience with Gransfors has been positive thus far, I'm left wondering if this was a vendor issue or if it was manufactured incorrectly. Regardless, the premium price that Gransfors Bruk charges for their axes leaves one hoping that a quality issue such as this would not be overlooked
