If your friend really wanted to get into bbq/smoking what would be your honest opinion

Maybe I don't no much about smokers.  Personally I think keeping a consistent heat is key.  In this situation your meat is heating and cooling and reheating again loosing moisture and flavor.  

The first thing I noticed was there was no opening to add more charcoal to retain and keep a consistent heat.  So moving along I filled the charcoal box let it heat up.  Putting in my pork butt and keeping a close eye on the temp gage.  

 Here's where I'm not impressed by this drum smoker. You have to remove everything to put in new charcoal light it and let it get to a smoking heat again. 

Disappointing as a smoker.

The features that you get in this cooker for the price are simply unmatched. Hinged lid with kevlar gasket, ash pan setup, porcelain-coated cooking grate, and the diffuser plate give you a LOT of bang for your buck. Add to that the 12 gauge cold rolled steel construction and you've got a major winner! You really don't have to do a thing to this cooker and that the thicker construction means more stable temps in cold or windy weather.

I bought this product a month ago and it cooks great and holds temperature very well but I took it to a competition after only using it twice and the lid gasket ripped and the thermometer would not go above 225 and when I put my digital thermometer in the temperature was over 300 it’s a great smoker I just wish quality was a little better

 I have smoked and grilled chicken legs, wings, whole chickens, burgers, short ribs and today 2 briskets. Everything has come out amazing! What has really impressed me is the cooking time you can get from this tank. I started my cook at 2:00am, 21 hours later it was still burning hot and consistent. I would have kept it going to see how long it would burn, but I was done! Impressive!

When we were just first firing up the grill the middle burner wouldn't light. Now I got sent some replacement piece I have yet to install because I'm not sure how. Now the third burner also won't light. The reason why we purchased and spent more on a Weber is for the quality of the grill

 I'm doing so, I see quite a bit of rust on them, no bueno. In hindsight, I would have bought the grill with the stainless steel grates instead. Now I'll be upgrading to them at a bit of a higher cost to me. Live and learn

Love my Genesis

 All of the parts fit together like a well-oiled machine. The folks at Weber have taken great care to source hardware from very reputable factories (i.e.: Screw heads don't strip when applying enough force to tighten securely like many others do)

 Genesis was the model I always went to first when shopping for a new grill. You know right away why there's such a disparity in price between Genesis and Spirit models when you simply lift the lid of each unit of comparable size. I am by no means knocking the Spirit model as it has served me extremely well for many years (and an equal amount of winters too!). Genesis is an upgrade for sure but you can best see why by assembling the unit yourself
