Nikon D3500 vs Nikon Z 50

Unfortunately, its autofocus system is very basic, with only 11 detection points. It's not especially reliable when it comes to face or object tracking. Also, it isn't the best option if you're interested in recording video since it can't record in 4k, and its FHD video quality is mediocre overall. Despite that, it's still one of the best cameras to start photography with, and most beginners will be happy with it

This camera's focus tracking is excellent. I was able to get some great shots of my dog running full speed. It's a big step up from the older Nikon dslr that I was using. It's quite compact with the kit lens

Get the Canon if you want 4k video capability and a fully articulated touchscreen, but if you're new to DSLRs, the Nikon is a great alternative budget option.

And honestly, the image quality from this is pretty good when recording 4K despite the crop. I don't think this is a camera you're going to buy specif...

it sucked lol. Using a D3500 with a nikon 17-55 2.8 lens. I couldnt auto-focus on anything because it was so dark, and the lens wasnt letting me manually focus! I switched it to M instead of MA on the lens but when I was spinning the dial it wasn't focusing, I was trying to make it infinty focus

But at this price point $1K you should be getting a lens more like a Fujinon 18-55 f2.8-f4 which is arguably the best kit lens going. Nikon missed the opportunity to check all the boxes here by doing a kit lens that more serious/experienced photographers on a budget/family would go for. Z 50 will sell a lot

and, they even managed to screw everything up by going to a 55mm filter. After a hundred and 57 years of 52 mm filters this kit 18-55 zoom requires a 55mm filter. and then there's The annoyance of the constant reminder that you need to extend the lens first before you can start shooting.

You can pick up a Nikon D700 or Canon 6D in the used market for less than $500 and they give you better, sharper images than the two new cameras you are looking at. In fact, the newer Nikon D750 FF body costs around $700 used, and it is definitely a better buy than a new D3500. The D700 and D750 WILL also autofocus with AF and AF-D lenses since these high end Nikon cameras have an in body focus motor. If you do not mind buying a used camera, I would recommend shopping for a used FF model instead of buying a new APS-C camera

They give you a lot of camera for a very reasonable price point, and in a few areas I think this actually exceeds what we're seeing with the Z6 and Z7...

To be honest, the only reason why I bought this was because all modern digital cameras lack the manual control functionalities of the camera. Nowadays, everything is "automatically" managed by the computer within the camera which, in most cases, ruins the pictures. I am so glad that I made the switch to this camera! It does everything that my other cameras does not do! It allows me to manually adjust the focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and so much more! I will admit that the camera can be a bit "much" to those who are new to the DSLR universe, but I will say that after you play with the camera for a while, you will know all of the menus, options and their locations like a pro! What I love about this camera is that you have the ability to switch out the stock lens for a macro lens (those insane close up photos) or for a telephoto lens (for those far distant pictures) if you choose! For me, personally, the stock lens does more than enough, but if I have the urge to buy one of the other lenses, I can do that because the camera is made for expand-ability! Contrary to what others may say, personally, I believe that the JPEG images are super clean and crisp. While you are not supposed to use JPEGs for post-production, I believe you can get away with some minor post with these files

How does my 7 year old camera hold more power is beyond me. But the very very worst feature of this camera is annoyingly idiotic flip screen. If you are like me, I love to leave my tripod attachment screwed in on the bottom of the camera to easily click in and out of my tripod. Well this camera decided to put the screen flip to the bottom making me take on and off this attachment and making things a hassle something that all other manufacturers took into account as their screen flips on ways that do get on the way

But I'm willing to order refurb direct for the VR edition of the lense. Got the standard option because I hate lenses with no IS (or VR in this case).

3. The image stabilization in both kit lenses (16-50 and 50-250) are significantly better that other F mount lenses that I own. Is it because of the larger Z mount? Not sure, but the result is that I can easily take sharp handheld photos at 1/8 sec with the 16-50 pancake lens, and I can get sharp handheld photos with the 50-250 telephoto at less than1/60 sec. This allows me to shoot at much lower iso values, which might be part of the reason that the photos look so good compared with those from my D500
