Get the Canon if you want 4k video capability and a fully articulated touchscreen, but if you're new to DSLRs, the Nikon is a great alternative budget option.

It might be better to get a D300s instead of a D300 because that'll give you video (not that its good in any way, but hey, its an option you'll have) and also supports dual SD/CF card slots -- useful for backups or RAW+JPEG modes.

it sucked lol. Using a D3500 with a nikon 17-55 2.8 lens. I couldnt auto-focus on anything because it was so dark, and the lens wasnt letting me manually focus! I switched it to M instead of MA on the lens but when I was spinning the dial it wasn't focusing, I was trying to make it infinty focus

Also this machine requires good lenses to maximize it's potential; the 18-200 VR Nikkor that works so well on my D70S seems softer on the D300. Heavily recommended for: Those who have Nikon cameras and have maxxed out the possibilities with those machines and are looking for greater challenges. The D300 will support Nikkor lenses made since 1959 (although the ones made before 1977 may need a minor, inexpensive modification to fit on the D300). Seriously, for anyone who can't afford high-end f/1.4 primes (not counting the Nikkor 50/1.4G, which is about the same price), the Tamron 45mm is easily the next best thing in its focal length range. This is an unpopular opinion, but only because so few people have given the lens a chance

You can pick up a Nikon D700 or Canon 6D in the used market for less than $500 and they give you better, sharper images than the two new cameras you are looking at. In fact, the newer Nikon D750 FF body costs around $700 used, and it is definitely a better buy than a new D3500. The D700 and D750 WILL also autofocus with AF and AF-D lenses since these high end Nikon cameras have an in body focus motor. If you do not mind buying a used camera, I would recommend shopping for a used FF model instead of buying a new APS-C camera

After looking at some other commenters I would have to emphasize heavily on getting the cheapest camera possible for a good lens. The D7000 and D200 are both great candidates, but may be a bit too old. I would really push you towards the D7100 in most regards, but for price and build the D300 is hard to beat. Get yourself a D300, and a good FX lens

To be honest, the only reason why I bought this was because all modern digital cameras lack the manual control functionalities of the camera. Nowadays, everything is "automatically" managed by the computer within the camera which, in most cases, ruins the pictures. I am so glad that I made the switch to this camera! It does everything that my other cameras does not do! It allows me to manually adjust the focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, and so much more! I will admit that the camera can be a bit "much" to those who are new to the DSLR universe, but I will say that after you play with the camera for a while, you will know all of the menus, options and their locations like a pro! What I love about this camera is that you have the ability to switch out the stock lens for a macro lens (those insane close up photos) or for a telephoto lens (for those far distant pictures) if you choose! For me, personally, the stock lens does more than enough, but if I have the urge to buy one of the other lenses, I can do that because the camera is made for expand-ability! Contrary to what others may say, personally, I believe that the JPEG images are super clean and crisp. While you are not supposed to use JPEGs for post-production, I believe you can get away with some minor post with these files
