They do not support themselves upright and placing a pot is tricky without them falling until the pot is in place. Any incline and the pots weight will cause the stands to fall. The stands weight distribution with the angle they are at are poorly designed. If the stands were able to be tightened further without stripping the threads, this wouldn't be an issue until heavy use

That depends where the hip pain is at. If the hip pain is at the bottom of the sleeping side, you'll want a thicker but deflated pad.
