 The rules explanation alone took well over an hour, and the game itself another five. While there were quite a few unclear rules questions during the game, this will absolutely get played again in our group, as hard as it is to get to the table. It's one of the wildest euros I've ever played. The art style is definitely a choice and the mechanics are bloated as all hell, but we still all liked it quite a lot

**Beyond the Sun** (1x4p, 1x2p): One of my new acquisitions from Essen this year. rather medium-weight, but so much fun to build up the giant tech tree and try to manage your resources so you don't run out of human ~~sacrifices to experiment on~~ resources to use for science.

**Feudum** (1x4p): Ho boy. This game is just *massive*. The rules explanation alone took well over an hour, and the game itself another five. What Did You Play This Week? - (October 18, 2021)

 Overall, even though this is a solo review and I haven't played Dune Imperium multiplayer yet, I get the sense that playing multiplayer would be a ton of fun. I envision it to be a really vicious knife fight of a game where you jockey for position in the worker placement parts, on the faction tracks, and in the combat. But for solo players, I think you'd want to look into this one if you like compelling worker placement games because again, the combo of the cards and the spaces are really cool. If you like simple solo A

 You do have the regular assortment of "trade this resource for that resource," etc., but I like that some of them let you place troops in the combat zone while others don't, so you have some harder choices to make there. The addition of certain action spaces that increase your influence with one of the factions to help you gain victory points really makes you consider your worker placement carefully and is a great mechanic overall.  FULL-ON CON, 1 out of 5: DECKBUILDING

 For example, you could commit a lot of troops and suddenly the A.I. drops in 4 or 5 or 6 troops because of a lucky action space. This could be like a swing of 4 victory points out of 10 to win the game

 I also like the intrigue and the sudden surprise attacks in the conflict aspect of the game. It's not like this is all extremely exciting and will blow you away, but I can see the thematic idea of each action/each card, so it's good for the type of game it is.  MIX, 2.5 out of 5: SMOOTH/SWINGY A

Playing Dune Solo: Needs More Spice

 However, like i said you can put out your agent under turn or you can reveal when you reveal your turn, is over you're, not gon na be able to take any more actions but you're gon na get all the stuff on the blue parts of your remaining Cards, so if i use these two cards to put people on the board, then i don't get that so i would just get the remaining ones, but using these cards will give you influence, which is a currency to buy more cards and other things. Players can buy more cards. You always have the opportunity to buy. These spice must flow cards for nine very expensive, but are worth a point, and these arrakis liaisons, which are pretty cheap but give you the opportunity to have more spending influence as time goes by or a deck of cards, which will be just a vast variety of Things some of those cards are expensive, like lady jessica here, but she lets you go up one influence immediately and then they're going to have different things in both the gray and the blue sections and they're going to let you go to different spots on the board

 So you're going to be looking at all those things as you take these cards, when you buy a card, they'll be replaced, and there are many many different things in this game that you might recognize from the dune universe. Some of them are going to fit your thing, some of them. When you end your turn, are going to add to your military strength, some of them. Let you cull cards from your deck there's some of them attack your opponents like here

 Just that combat area was the main thing i feel like the rest of it kind of faded away from me as the gameplay happened, but that combat area still looks like man. I really wish they'd put like some shadows there, or maybe actually put the actual like red swords that are on the other, like combat cards, and things like that in there it's like hmm, it could have been a little bit better graphic design. I guess now. This is a deck building game mixed with worker placement

 Like my dad made me watch the movies and quoted the books like growing up, so the theme's always been there. It was a class he took exactly it was. It was a class i had to take to be part of the family. I wasn't part of the atreides family until i expected they must grow yeah exactly um, but yeah

The 4 Squares Dune: Imperium Review

  Do you use a card to place an agent or do you save it because it will grant combat strength when you reveal? Tough choices!  At the end of the round comes the “combat” which is basically just how many troops (cubes) you’ve committed to the current combat round, plus those additional combat strength cards plus special, “Intrigue” cards you can play (they are earned from spots on the board) for that extra, “ah HA!” Moment.  …and so much more. You have influence tracks that you need to move up on in the hopes of acquiring victory points…but wait! You need Spice first! No! You can’t get the Spice without paying Water…and you don’t have enough water. No no no!!!! Your opponent just went to the spot you wanted!!!  This is a great game and I’m glad it didn’t just turn out to be a money grab coasting off of the hype/popularity of the new movie

 You have influence tracks that you need to move up on in the hopes of acquiring victory points…but wait! You need Spice first! No! You can’t get the Spice without paying Water…and you don’t have enough water. No no no!!!! Your opponent just went to the spot you wanted!!!  This is a great game and I’m glad it didn’t just turn out to be a money grab coasting off of the hype/popularity of the new movie.  An absolute must buy in this veteran board gamer’s opinion.

Fear is the meeple killer

 Arnak has 5 rounds, but there is no limit to points. So I never feel like "oh no, so and so got a point" has any real impact, because it is too early to tell what will happen.

But Dune Imperium just does a better job at driving player interaction. I also think what makes D:I shine brighter than Arnak is that D:I has a time limit and very tense and tight 10 point limit. Arnak has 5 rounds, but there is no limit to points. So I never feel like "oh no, so and so got a point" has any real impact, because it is too early to tell what will happen

I have to. Imhotep is the first. Such an attractively presented game, lovely chunky wooden components, but the game play for me was… meh. 

The other is Mysterium. Such an amazingly beautiful component inventory, lovely artwork and as thematic as hell. But the gameplay (for me) is way too much setup work for an only mediocre play experience. 

I have returned to these two multiple times with different groups and they just never click. 

What games disappointed you? Have at it!

Games that disappointed

 The AI in 2p is really poorly thought out and a very bad mechanic imo. We didnt have much fun playing this and i think it will not hit the table again soon. 

 Playing them correctly makes you realize how many strategies are possible in this game.

 I do not count my plays but i would guess Arnak might soon be my most played game. We love the leaders. Playing them correctly makes you realize how many strategies are possible in this game.

What Did You Play This Week? - (November 08, 2021)

 We will get together again next month, this time we'll try to get the maximum amount of six players.

 In that sense the "Raiders of the Lost Ark"-like theme of Arnak is much better fitting.

 But somehow I don't think that the mechanics of that game really fit the Dune theme. The GF9 Dune game captures the "feel" of the Dune theme much better. In that sense the "Raiders of the Lost Ark"-like theme of Arnak is much better fitting.

We played Dune: Imperium a few months ago. I think that thing's almost a year old now! I doubt it holds up anymore.

Sure we live in a golden age of board games and the cult of the new is alive and well here, but does anyone break out a vintage game once in a while?
