I previously owned a Gerber knife with the FAST system, with drop point and half serrated edge (can't seem to find this model anymore), but lost it and was looking for a replacement blade. Ended up with this SOG Flash II after reading a bunch of reviews. I won't comment on the blade sharpness as I haven't really put it through rigorous use, but will comment on quality and ergonomics instead. I'm a little nitpicky

This could be a good axe but for me the handle is too thin and doesn't have alot of grip to it. The axe itself is smaller than I expected. Also, the thin handle makes it hard to hold if you have bigger hands. I'm afraid it might go flying if I get sweat on my hands or lose concentration while swinging

UPDATE July 10, 2010: I noticed a crack at the tip of the handle on my original SOG Aegis, so it was returned for a replacement. The clip on the replacement Aegis does not seem to be as flexible as I thought it was when I first received the Aegis. In addition, the Aegis has friction strips on the handle with raised letters "SOGSOGSOGSOG" that add more resistance against sliding the knife out of the pocket easily. Furthermore, the end of the handle is not as flared out as the handle on the Flash II, so it is difficult to use the three-fingered grip on the Aegis -- I have difficulty getting a grip that way

Not only that, it came slightly bent. To go into further detail, the blade on this hatchet is ground at much too aggressive of an angle, meaning that it doesn't bite into the wood at all, it just kind of bounces out of the cut. Furthering that problem, the head is way too thick to get a less aggressive grind on it without removing a ton of material. Another problem is that it's way too heavy, making it feel overly clumsy in the hand, and that's only exacerbated by the fact that it's bent just ever so slightly, so your cuts will almost never land how you want them too

5 inch cutting edge and assisted opening that weighs 3 ounces!! Yes, I said three oz. 2. The cheap looking Zytel is tough as nails and provides a very good grip while not wearing out the edge of your pocket. 3

SO Close to Perfection... For the Price, Size & Weight, this was a Beautiful Purchase ! After studying the item for several days and debating its usefulness for splicing/grafting trees and trimming them, I went ahead and made the buy

The blade is definitely sharp and the snap open action is good, but those are two things SOG has always done well. I just can't figure out why it cost me over $50 to go back to a plastic handled knife. I assume it will hold up but it just feels cheap in the hand. [EDIT] I followed the advice of several other people with my complaint and added a little lubrication (I used white lithium but I've heard a lot of people use a little gun oil) and the opening mechanism felt a lot less gritty and easier to work with

The price was cheap enough so if I lose it or have to throw it away, no great loss. It's light weight and the cover is nice enough. Durability.

I can honestly say the longevity of this knife has far exceeded my expectations. I'm almost 50 years old, I've owned/lost/broke countless pocket knives, and am simply amazed at how this one has held up. I do have a couple minor gripes: This knife does have the SOG-typical blade play, both horizontal and vertical, that I don't much care for.
