 I would go so far as to say the cheap, old-style ones with tubular steel handle would be better, IF they have a better sheath.  It comes with a usable factory edge. The grip is good, but not hand-filling for a man.

This could be a good axe but for me the handle is too thin and doesn't have alot of grip to it. The axe itself is smaller than I expected. Also, the thin handle makes it hard to hold if you have bigger hands. I'm afraid it might go flying if I get sweat on my hands or lose concentration while swinging

 Not only that, it came slightly bent. To go into further detail, the blade on this hatchet is ground at much too aggressive of an angle, meaning that it doesn't bite into the wood at all, it just kind of bounces out of the cut. Furthering that problem, the head is way too thick to get a less aggressive grind on it without removing a ton of material. Another problem is that it's way too heavy, making it feel overly clumsy in the hand, and that's only exacerbated by the fact that it's bent just ever so slightly, so your cuts will almost never land how you want them too

 The only reason it's 2 stars and not 1 star is because it didn't break or chip on me.

 Furthering that problem, the head is way too thick to get a less aggressive grind on it without removing a ton of material. Another problem is that it's way too heavy, making it feel overly clumsy in the hand, and that's only exacerbated by the fact that it's bent just ever so slightly, so your cuts will almost never land how you want them too. Also the handle gets painful to use because it doesn't do enough to absorb the impact of the hits. So, spend $5 more and get a hatchet that's actually worth it

SO Close to Perfection...  For the Price, Size & Weight, this was a Beautiful Purchase ! After studying the item for several days and debating its usefulness for splicing/grafting trees and trimming them, I went ahead and made the buy

.  Although one side was shaped and sharpened to Near-Perfection, the other side looks as if someone attempted to sharpen it, (Badly), with a file. There were 1" gouges in the blade making it seem as if they wanted to "Bevel" the blade in only certain places; but they did manage to give the overall sharpness a nice edge. (The edge with which my axe arrived would not have been conducive to "Easy & Quick" future sharpening)  I spent about an hour re-shaping and sharpening the blade-edge to a functional and desired form

 Considering right out of the package, the beveled edge was chipped (quality control?). I'm going to keep it because it isn't worth the hassle of sending it back. Like I said, you get what you pay for and it was $22 so.

The shape of the handle provides a great grip as well, with two very slight depending angles or you might call them quasi-choils on either end of the handle lock my pointer, middle, and ring fingers in place. The knife also has a bit of a badonkadonk, with a larger handle that extends past the downward angle of the choil, giving you an even more secure grip on the knife itself. That some extension also houses the lanyard hole.

I would prefer a positive action on the knife throughout, but when opened it doesn’t feel insecure.

So how about the steel? S30V is a tried and true workhorse. Developed by Crucible with the help of legendary knife maker Chris Reeve, intended to hold a fine sharp edge for a long time, as well as having a very healthy amount of chromium making it extremely rust resistant.
