 So the pack has a day-pack included that attaches inside the pack for ease of use and it has a clip inside to attach your bladder inside the day-pack. This is all and good however I don't really plan on using the day-pack and that bladder clip is the only one in the pack. So if you remove the day-pack you lose your mounting point. I found an easy fix that being some Velcro tape stuck together fed through an exposed portion of the metal frame at the top of the inside of the pack that allows me to hold a bladder in place (A zip-tie worked as well but is much less practical)

 So far I can only give initial impressions as my only real use thus far was a 3 mile overnight trip to the upper twin lake on Mt.Hood about a 3 mile hike. It performed pretty well for that but I still yet to put it though some more punishing things like get caught in a rainstorm to truly test how well it holds up in more undesirable circumstances. The sizing is a touch big but that was to be expected as I'm very thin but with a broad build making sizing of clothes and packs a little more challenging

My first real backpacking pack and its almost perfect

Ordered mine on sale in late spring, taken it on a handful of 10+ mile out & backs and a 20 mile summit so far, overall I’d say really great bag i’d expect nothing less from mountain hardwear. Excels in comfort, ventilation, and overall layout in my opinion compared to similar options from Osprey & REI brand bags, although a bit more spendy. The fit was pretty true to size, I have a 19” torso and 32” waist and the S/M fits me great. The sliding lumbar support really sells it for me, keeps the pack considerably more balanced and stable especially on more technical terrain

 The pack has held up well enough in both the rocky high desert as well as alpine bristlecone forests over my first season with it. The detachable day pack turned out to be a lot more useful than I originally expected when I ordered this pack, Great for small day hikes or dropping your main pack at camp to summit with the daypack. Daypack is pretty comfortable with a 3L bladder although a chest strap would be nice. Biggest gripe I’ve seen about the bag is the front mesh pocket, it hasn’t been a tear concern for me personally even in pretty thick brush, and I hardly use it for anything but wrappers anyway so rain getting the contents wet is not a concern for me either

Pillow: You don't need to spend 40 quid on a pillow. I had a dirt cheap one from Trekology that worked just fine until I managed to puncture it (my fault), and I replaced it with a no name version that's virtually identical and has worked ever since.

Sleeping pad: As a side sleeper (again), the foam pads are shit and you will not be comfortable. Inflatable ones are where you want to look. I have the Klymit pads - they claim it takes about a dozen breaths to inflate it, and they're not far off. Packs down to the size of can of beer, so easier to fit in your bag than the foam ones

 Hey Backpackers, yet another newbie looking for info here.   


I've recently decided to get back into camping and unlike when I used to destination camp as a teen, I've been wanting to do more backpacking, starting my home country (The UK) to see some of the sights and then, assuming I don't somehow get abducted by sheep, I'd like to progress onto longer, more self-sufficient trips across mainland Europe (Mainly the Balkans)

Right now I have some really old camp gear that is either very heavy or not in a condition I'd like to rely on when adventuring. My first planned trip (And the one I'd like to have at least some starter gear for) is an 86 mile walk along Hadrian's Wall, mostly just rough/craggy fells and moors for the most part.

Below is what my main gear considerations are so far (and link a google doc I've made to remind myself too), I'd appreciate any Criticism or suggestions since I'm new to this and most of the sources I've checked have either been older (worried there may be better options) or seem to be US Specific (Sourcing some things like Teton sports sleeping bags is a nightmare)

**My requirements/info**

* **Backpacking on foot to destinations where I would camp**
* **multiple day trips, likely up to a week to start,** 
* **Mostly alone or with one friend.** 
* **My budget can be up to £1000** but I'd much rather start with "Okayish" equipment and then upgrade things as I go, starting with the critical things, though the temptation to buy an Osprey Atmos is tempting. The link below should show my current purchase plans in more detail but this is the summary so far.

**Main Concerns**

* **Tent** \- **Wild Country Zephyros** or **Snugpak Ionosphere** £179 (I haven't found a cheaper tent that seems worth going cheaper yet)
* **Backpack - Karrimor Panther 65 (£65)** or **Osprey Atmos AG 65 £220** \- I wouldn't mind some middling alternatives if there are any that seem worth it, though I'm tempted to buy a used Atmos I've seen for £100
* **Hiking Boots -** **Inov8 Roclite 345 (£149)** These don't seem too unreasonable and I've seen them recommended multiple times, the only thing I've been advised so far is to get some lighter shoes for comfort but I'm worried those may not stand much wear.
* **Water Filters &amp; Bottles - Lifestraw (£20)** This seemed useful enough coupled with some regular water bottles, though I've heard I may need to look into bladders etc for longer treks, suggestions for these would be great though I should look into Sawyers alternatives.
* **Sleeping Bags -** **Mcotta cotton flannel (£39)** or **Teton Sports Celsius XXL $70** I've struggled choosing a sleeping bag since there are SO MANY options and lots of opinions ranging from "Just sleep under a blanket" to "You need a huge cinnabar mummy sleeping bag or you'll die". I'm a side sleeper and would prefer something with more space, though getting space + Lightweight for backpacking sounds impossible, suggestions here would be amazing.
* **Sleeping Pads - Therm-a-Rest Z-Lite SOL £40** or **Yellowstone Insulated Foam £5** I've been told both works together well which is tempting except I think I might be overpacking majorly. I've also looked into self-inflating options but I'm out of my depths and feel like they're going to be huge weight problems.
* **Tarp vs Footprint -** I understand Tarps are universally useful so will default to one of these unless footprints are a better option, from what I've seen footprints seem to be either very heavy or tent specific (Rei site)

**Other items**

* **Raincover -** Still figuring this one out, I'm assuming it's just like a tarp?
* **Trekking Poles -** I saw some Cascade Mountain Techs that seemed worth the £15
* **Stoves -** Currently eyeballing the Shayson Portable £20, I've heard Jetboils might be worth looking at.
* **Pillows -** I'll settle for something cheap like a Trekmates Deluxe Pillow £5 to start (unless anyone knows a better alternative that isn't £40+
* **Headlamps v Torches v Lanterns -** So far I'm leaning to getting an okay headlamp and a cheap, light camp light for at nights since I don't plan on doing much trekking after dark (Yet)
* **Camp Utensils &amp; Tools -** Any suggestions here would be great, ideally a good utensil set that is light (pot/plate/cup/spoon/fork), tools ranging from a Swiss army knife to a Trowel.
* **First Aid Kit -** I have this mostly covered unless there is anything I may need that a regular FAK wouldn't include.

Those are my main considerations for now, though I'm also looking into buying some much more trekking appropriate clothing (places like Steinadler and Military Surplus stores seem to be my best option so far)

UK/EU Beginner Backpacker, Looking for gear tips

   On a trial hike, I loaded it up with whatever I could fit in it and it handled the load fantastically. Everything about this pack is comfortable. On a day-long hike I would be hard pressed to use all the space it provides, even when including a jacket and some extra clothing. However the straps cinch everything down very nicely and there is no feeling of unused space, or things shifting

  The amount of storage in it extremely impressive, as is the way it distributes the load.  I'm 6'2 and 300lbs.  I'm a fat hiker.  The frame adjusted perfectly, and the waist belt actually fit!  This has not been the case with other packs

Waist Sizing: Only one size (waist belt “fits all”). Ideal for waistlines less than 40 inches.

Larger Than Most: While the hip belt can be removed when traveling, the shoulder straps cannot, leaving them exposed. It can fit a lot of gear, but the shape of the bag is wider than most. Unfortunately, this causes the Kelty Redwing 50 to be larger than the standard carry-on luggage size when flying, meaning you’d have to check it instead. Attributes like this are important to consider when purchasing this pack
