The Subharmonicon is similar in size to the Mother 32 and DFAM semi modular synths and they are good as standalone monophonic synths (each with special characteristics and character) but are great if you pair up all 3 modules and patch the audio and modulation paths across all 3 synth modules or pair them with a standalone semi modular synthesizer and keyboard like the Moog Grandmother and the Moog Matriarch.. they are all Euro Rack compatible and are perhaps a easier entry to the Euro rack world for those new to subtractive analog synthesizers .

For super affordability and some polyphony, maybe a microKorg or MiniNova? Or for about the same price as a Minilogue, a Roland JD-XI or a Hydrasynth Explorer.

If you're more into traditional rock or metal and want to quickly prototype a changing sixteen-bar bassline to play over with a guitar, patch Seq 1 into VCO1 for pitch, assign Rhythm 1 to Sequencer 1 (via the button), and crank Rhythm 1 hard left (slowest). Then crank Rythm 2 hard right (fastest) and assign that to Sequencer 2. Control tempo to taste. Sequencer 1 will now drive an arpeggiated chord progression to Sequencer 2 for sixteen looping bars

The waveform display is not just fun but actually useful, you can see the effect of tweaks, not just hear it. The bass sounds great. One star off, because there are minor 'clicks' as others posted, but with some tuning it doesn't bother too much.

The Sub Phatty is simply the best synth you can buy at the $1000 and below price range. Not that this is 1978 and there is a lot of competition in analog monosynths, still this is a great addition. Reminds me of a Korg MS-20, but with Moog sound. There are presets, but it's a great synth for learning, if you don't know you VCF from your VCO

In the end, it is a “lower-mid range” synth in terms of price and functionality, and I think it’s a perfect gateway to mid to higher end synths.
