The quality of the Spartan Reef does come with a weight disadvantage. They are the heaviest pair we tested at a whopping 47 grams. But thanks to the stellar fit and function of these glasses, they wear more like a 35-gram pair. As much as we love the thousands of excellent plastic lenses out there, the optics of the Maui Jim Spartan Reef remind us of the benefits of glass lenses. Look for something *without* spring hinges. If a frame is going to break, it's there. They seem like a good idea, but only a couple of brands do them right. Otherwise it's a needle thin piece of metal under tension inside there

In terms of "buying for life", look for a high quality acetate frame, but even the best will get brittle with age eventually (except for a material called Optyl, but that is rare and tricky to work with unless they know what they're doing). Don't *ever* let someone try to adjust them if they don't know what it is. To quote my teacher "It lasts forever until a dispenser touches it."

The fit on your head is important, but look for a frame that's comfortable on the bridge of your nose, as that bit isn't adjustable on shell frames. The rest is adjusted behind the ears.

These are my favorite pair of sunglasses but they are cheaply built and are scratched and easily smudged. Can somebody please help me find a high quality, possibly prescription lookalike?  If I were to own Maui Gym, what I probably do is kind of unify their sunglass lineup and you know, really amplify some of the classic styles. One of my biggest complaints about Maui Jim is they come out with some really killer styles and they just completely discontinue them like two years later never to be found or heard of again and that's really annoying and frustrating. If I were them, I would create some really good designs which they've already done and kind of make some staples and classics in their sunglass lineup. Kind of like they've already done with sunglasses like the Maui Jim, Mavericks and the Maui Gym Calico

I want something that will take a beating without showing it (like the revision glasses mention below).  I'm specifically looking for polarized aqua mirrored lenses and I'd prefer to stay away from anything owned by luxottica, or other monoplositic giants I might not know about.

I've got two pairs of sunglasses at the moment.  One by revision eyewear, which is mostly angled towards military use and are basically indistructable, and one from knockaround.  The revision eyewear glasses are insane.  They've literally been hit by a hammer before and I didn't even notice a difference in the optical clarity.  Issue is they don't fit my face very well and their lense options and frame styles are pretty limited, especially if you want want polarized lenses, so I find myself wearing the knockarounds a bunch.  They're much more comfortable for me, and look great with exactly the lense type I want, but they inevitably pick up scratches over time (I may have solved this) and even if you never damage them the plastic of the frame seems to fail eventually.  My last pair broke the joint at the arm while I was wearing then driving.  Nothing touched them at the time.  I still don't understand it.  So to end my rant, does anyone know a company that is stupid tough and has a good selection?

I think that over time small amounts of dust would transfer from the lenses to microfiber case and lead to micro abrasions.  So far it seems to be working.  At the very least they're lasting way longer than any I've had before.

Durable sunglasses with good selection/customization

Maui Jim lenses are simply the best These are ultra light and fit great for me and I have a wider than average face but doesn't feel like bending them or any pressure on my temples or ears (other sunglasses do that and gives me headaches if wear them long) Excellent look to boot I got blue lenses for general purpose use and keeping eye out for a sale to get another pair or two with other lenses for variety and use for different applications Best sunglasses I've ever had

I’m willing to spent around $350 on a good pair of sunglasses if the price reflects it. I was looking at Julbo’s sunglasses since they have the lenses that change shade intensity kind of like transition lenses. I hike on forests, open areas, deserts, and above the tree line; so basically pretty much everywhere because I travel around a lot. 

I definitely want side shields since my eyes are crazy sensitive sometimes. I’d say that’s a big requirement. Polarized lenses, anti scratch coating, all that stuff. Price has to reflect quality.

Looking for some fellow hikers who wear prescription sunglasses. What Rx sunglasses do you recommend?

 The lens clarity seems as excellent as you'd expect, so no issue there. But they're very lopsided when put on - it's impossible to get them to sit right - and just put together very poorly. They fit more like some $5 pair you might buy at a gas station convenience store on the way to the beach.

I bought this pair to replace a similar Maui Jim pair that was lost on vacation. I bought that last pair about 5-6 years ago, paid about $170 for them from a mall kiosk. They were excellent.  This $210 Maui Jim pair, on the other hand, are a major disappointment in fit and the way they're put together

 When you're looking at your Gps, your computer screen, your dashboard, you are going to get clear vision and with that, let's hop into these frames themselves. All right. So kicking it off with this one here. This is the Maui Jim Ohio

 They are going to help grip on the sides of your heads with that flexible temple. It's going to be really comfortable and adjust to your head shape. The pins on the hinges are anti-corrosive so they're going to be durable and they are going to last for you. This frame does feature Maui Brilliant lenses which is going to be the most advanced Maui lenses you can get

 As far as the frame aesthetic and the size here, the difference you are going to find with this frame here is the temple pads are going to be more flush with the rubber there and the lens height is going to be a bit shorter as well. This frame is made of lightweight nylon and comes with Maui Pure lenses which are also lightweight themselves. It comes in at an Sfw of 138 for a men's large to extra large fit.  They're scratch resistant, extremely malleable, they have beautiful clarity and they fit comfortably without falling off easily. I can shake my head pretty vigorously without them loosening more than a quarter of an inch. They're what I expected for ~$140 and I am thoroughly satisfied.  Besides that, the case is high quality, it has an inner shell to protect from crushing

The stylish Sunski Dipseas is our best bang for the buck for a more feminine frame. These glasses scored high in every category except coverage. They ran well, skied well, and sunbathed extra well. Coming in at only 18 grams, the Dipseas are the lightest in our field, and it shows. These are super comfortable glasses with well-built frames and metal hinges. Neither the design nor the price tag will weigh you down. 
Coverage is where these glasses take a big hit. The round lenses, while classy, just don't provide as much protection. This is also a more feminine-looking frame, which could be a pro but perhaps makes them less versatile than nearly all of the other unisex glasses in our lineup. Regardless, if you want style and performance on a budget, the Dipseas are a great choice.
