One-Player Wednesday - (April 21, 2021)

This game is terrific. Fantasy Flight certainly knows how to do an LCG right. First of all, this game is so incredibly thematic. So many times in games the theme is just pasted on a set of mechanics, but not here

You can tell that a huge amount of love (and brilliance) went into designing this game to really feel like you are playing a superhero versus a villain. For example, in one of the expansion decks (the Green Goblin) there is a mechanic to switch the Goblin back and forth from his Norman Osborne persona depending on his mental state! Simply awesome

Best LCG I have ever played

 Then players will face the minions they are engaged with.  Each player will have an encounter card dealt to them, and then in player order they will activate.  The first player token will pass, and a new round will begin.  Winning and Losing:  Players win if they element the second stage Villain (third stage for harder difficulty)

 Playing a card is simply looking at the top left corner and then discarding cards that equal the resource cost. Each hero feels like Iron Man, Spider-man, She-hulk, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. Meaning, Iron Man is building parts to his armor, and She-hulk is a power house that can really help the players defeat the villain. The obligations that may appear can inconvenience the players, and if a player nemesis appears then that is another enemy everyone must overcome

 Starting scheme is resolved by reading the back of it’s card before advancing it to its active side. The encounter deck should be shuffled (villain deck, standard encounter cards, and one modular set of cards chosen) with the obligations set aside that belong to heroes playing the game.  Players should now draw their starting hand based on their alter-ego card. They may take a mulligan to discard cards in their hand to their discard pile to draw a new set of cards

A great intuitive card game that looks fantastic

. especially if my wife had remembered she had one when she was 1 cow value away from the spot she wanted to deliver. She lost by 10 points, and had her hand value been 1 higher, she would have won by 1-2. So 

 Neither one of us like the new design of the board, the trail is so faint that it's hard to follow (I initially thought this was blown out of proportion ... it's not)

What Did You Play This Week? - (November 22, 2021)

Well, this is a non-buy for me.  I already have *everything*, lost interest by the time the final kickstarter shipped, and Marvel Champions has basically obsoleted SotM for me.

Here's a stripped down version of the announcement:

And the polish on the game shines brightly, thanks to the development and playtesting help of our developer Chris Burton and quite a few playtesters. We started working on this game in early 2020, and most of the last half of the year was spent in intensive playtesting to make sure this was the best version of Sentinels of the Multiverse that anyone had ever seen.

Sounds like they're going to eventually re-release ALL of that content with "definitive" editions. I'm very skeptical as I'm one of those guys who became so overwhelmed with the gigantic box and everything that I sold it all.

GtG announces Sentinels of the Multiverse: Definitive Edition.

 I'm back at it now and had much more fun treating it as strictly a series of deck construction puzzles. Picking up a couple of heroes outside of the core box helped with that a lot. Ms. Marvel and Black Widow are both much more interesting and enabled play styles that felt more directed than just pick a color and take all the good cards of that color

**Marvel Champions:** Got this for solo play months ago and bounced off hard. As a very enthusiastic Arkham LCG player, I think I went in with the wrong expectations, plus I have no real attachment to Marvel heroes. What Did You Play This Week? - (April 19, 2021)

I bought this entirely as a splurge purchase with the hopes that I would enjoy a playthrough or two by myself or with my girlfriend. After explaining the premise to a couple of friends at work before the package even arrived, they said they were down to play this as well. Everyone got done at 7pm, came over to my place, and we cracked open the box. After about 15 minutes of assembly and organization, we built the suggested hero decks at the back of the Learn to Play guide, and thus began our hour long presentation of reading the rules

After 4 hours of deep thought, number crunching, and cursing the encounter deck, we eventually lost to Rhino in his second phase

Games I Dislike and Don't Play: Monopoly, I’m not a fan of games where so much is left up to luck and dice. I’m all for randomness from cards or something but I like to feel like the decisions I make matter instead of just playing with luck      

 I am currently living out of my vehicle so the small size is kind of a must. I got Marvel Champions a couple weeks ago (love it) but that’s probably then only box of it’s size I can fit. Bonus points if it’s on Amazon and I can have it shipped to a prime locker

Daily Discussion and Game Recommendations Thread (February 19, 2021)

 The next scenario, which is against the Klaw, then upgrades the difficulty beyond belief. Every, and I mean EVERY aspect of the villain and the challenges you are facing are increased by quite a bit. You are then fighting what seems to be an insurmountable task every turn.Every turn is mitigating the damage or scheme placed on the scenario while plucking away slowly on the villains HP

Every now and then you play a big damage card but the stress of that mitigation is frustrating and infuriating. FFG cannot get out of their Cthulhu mindset

Horrible, just horrible.

* Got in my 60th play of **Marvel Champions**, this time was Groot Justice and Rocket Aggression vs chapter 1 / Drang in the GMW campaign, and I got annihilated. I must have thwarted 50 threat off schemes and never managed to get the villain to phase 2, AND I saw as I was packing up that I had missed 2-3 encounter cards I should have dealt due to an effect. So .

 In my case, that's actually a good thing because my son is 3.5 now and huge into Avengers, so by the time the new KS delivers he might be ready to start playing too!

 Planning to come back to this sometime this week, hopefully with better results, though I might need a better hero combination. Rocket never really got going.

* **Marvel United** I tried to see if I should get extra stuff on the X-Men kickstarter. This one was VERY light -- even lighter than I expected. The SHIELD mode worked well enough, but it's so light you could easily play 3-4 characters yourself. However, I don't think I would recommend this for solo just because of how light it is

* **On Mars** - I rated it 6/10 but would be interested in revisiting someday if I had a proper group to play it a few times. I generally don't care for Lacerda's games solo, and my wife wasn't fond of all the rules, and the exceptions to rules, and the exceptions to the exceptions of those exceptions. I get it. But I did see some things in it that I liked

  Quite honestly, I want just another pack or two, because as an adult I don't want to play this game THAT many times. But a little more variety would be nice.

 The red is a bit more orange-like for instance. The colors wouldn't be too big of a deal, but the lack of plastic coating is disappointing. This set is getting dirty looking faster and clearly will not last as long.  It may have been a fluke that the color was off and these cards were not as well coated

It may have been a fluke that the color was off and these cards were not as well coated. - the packaging of the box was exactly the same so I don't know how I would tell the difference if I saw two of them on the shelf in a store - but in this case I wish I would have bought the $12 set at Barnes and Noble instead of this cheaper set which was lower quality.
