I'm 6'4" and deep in dad bod territory. Most backpacks are not proportional to my torso. I've used a messenger bag for work for some time, but am returning to school this fall and would prefer to go back to backpacking around campus.

Some of the designs from Topo Designs have caught my eye, even if they are marketed as travel bags rather than for daily use (such as [this](https://topodesigns.com/products/convertible-travel-bag-laptop-backpack-30l?variant=40136110899253)). I also need something that can hold a 15 inch laptop.

Suggestions for other brands or models that suit us bigger-bodied folk are appreciated. Or if you have experience with one of these travel bags from Topo. Thanks!

 The pockets are very well designed with plenty of locations to store different items. My 15" MacBook Pro Retina fits perfectly in the laptop pouch with room for a slightly larger computer (I have the 16" variant). The back panel is comfortable and rests at just the right spot on my lower back (I am 5'10"). The straps are springy and curved in a way that distributes the weight very well on my shoulders, and this pack has been much more comfortable carrying a lot of weight than with other backpacks I have used

 The pack is very comfortable and great for commuters and people who walk and carry a lot of things. However, I have concerns about the durability and quality of the materials. The strap on my pack has begun to fail after only 3-months.  So I've had this backpack for about 3 months and the stitching in one of the shoulder straps has already come apart. The trim on the strap has come off about 3 inches, and connection between the elastic top part and the fabric lower half is about 1/3 frayed. This is a pretty serious problem since the entire strap is likely to fail eventually. I regularly carry a lot of weight in my bag so I don't know if this is a design problem or just an individual failure

Excellent Design - Questionable Quality

 Several reviews indicate one of the shoulder strap tore loose. Again, how long it will last depends on the weight within the backpack.  Hey Targus, if you are going to use a steel cable to strengthen the carry handle of a backpack designed to carry more than a few pounds, you might wanna think about a stronger means of supporting the steel cable. Thin nylon is a fail waiting to happen

 With all the reviews it's difficult to find those that indicate the carry handle cable pulled completely out of the backpack on one side or the other. How long it will last depends on the weight within the backpack.  - The Stitching of the Straps to the Backpack, At the Top: The straps end just below a single line of heavy stitching (see the last pic). Had they extended another couple inches the double line of stitching above the padding would have given the straps much more strength

 Rather than return it I'm thinking I'll take it to a luggage repair place and have them do what Targus should have done. Reinforce the carry handle or replace the steel cable with something that won't rip thru the nylon. Extend the straps a couple more inches and add heavy stitching in a boxed X pattern to secure the straps.

So many great features but ...

 The second large compartment (the one without the laptop sleeve) seems like it could hold a 5-6 inch stack of stuff - certainly enough to handle a full day at college or a change of clothes if you're traveling. There's a fold-down flap that helps hold that space open.  Side compartments should hold smallish bottles of water, there are even zipper compartments that might hold a small umbrella. Same problem as that narrow front zipper compartment though: don't put anything in there that might drop down and be hard to retrieve

 This one has the webbing, but the loop is just a loop of webbing. A bit more trouble to stick fingers in for a better grasp.  - The straps themselves are a little stiff-feeling. They might be a bit irritating for some people especially those who will be loading the bag down with a lot of books, and hauling it through airports or while walking longer distances

  Side compartments should hold smallish bottles of water, there are even zipper compartments that might hold a small umbrella. Same problem as that narrow front zipper compartment though: don't put anything in there that might drop down and be hard to retrieve.  The padding feels pretty good across the back.  There's a nifty "hidden" zipper compartment along the back padding which could hold some small things

 I'm tall and broad-shouldered so they seem OK for me, but then I'm going to be using this for car commuting.  - The very front has a zipper that leads to a narrow and surprisingly deep compartment. If you have large hands, your hand will just barely fit inside there. I'm not entirely sure would that compartment would be good for, storage-wise, because things could get lost down there

 It is the Targus Drifter 2 17 inch laptop holder or 17.3 inches according to the Um tag here. The measurements in inches are 14.57 inches by 7

 um, it's at the top right here. Smoke compartment. Then the main storage compartment [Applause] has Um has a divider as well as a um, a mesh pocket. um yeah, a mesh pocket where I keep my um, you know, um, wireless mouse, my Um and other computer accessories

 And here is where I keep my notebook for work and school along with my calendar and other necessary Um items. I even have room for a small dictionary and a calculator. [Applause] Um, there's a smaller compartment in the front where I um, hold other things like spare reusable masks, my phone charger um, and candy and snacks, and in the Um front compartment here where I put keep my writing, utensils and other um, other important stuff. there is a um, another security compartment, a zippered pocket where I keep um, other private stuff, and there is a small um zippered pocket way in the front where I can keep other things

On arrival, bag seemed great. Fit all my needs for laptop, work and personal items. Purchased in April 2022, use was 3-4x per week, by September, zipper was broken on pocket that had minimal use. After multiple emails and photos back and forth with Targus

They want the product returned to them (at my cost) and then they will process return and send replacement back to me. So that leaves me without a backpack for about 2 weeks

 Guess the measurements did not equate in my brain. Pockets for everything i need. Plenty of space for my huge HP ZBook 17 and I have even slipped the Lenovo Thinkpad on the other side just to test if it would hold. Major storage space when using the one laptop

 When i need to take my programmer somewhere, then it takes a ride.  One thing that I have to agree with a couple other reviewers on is that the bottom could use a little more padding. If you are a complete moron and do not take care of your stuff or you do not mean to set it down so hard by slipping or falling, you may smack that laptop a bit. I do not worry so much for myself but to make sure, I cut out some extra foam for the bottom just to make sure this was not an issue, ever

 If I could do it over again, I would buy the Everki Titan like I did for my gaming laptop. More money, much better quality.

ok bag, could have been better

 This bag has everything I could ask for. It can handle all I would need to go out of town for a few days without being too bulky, it looks great, has lots and lots of pockets and padding for my computer, and seems made of quality materials (I'll update after a couple months if it turns out that's not true). It hits my price sweet spot of between $50-$100, and is also comfortable as hell- I can't wait to try it out on a hike. Basically, it's everything I was looking for and so far I couldn't be happier with the purchase
