  I'll probably forget to update this review down the line if my feelings change, but if it's anything like the last laptop I had, I'll probably bump it up a star or two based on longevity.

 The cool thing about it is that it charges very quickly.  Wifi works fine and it comes with a ethernet cord slot when you need it. Video quality is good and refresh rate is adequate.  Form Factor is strange as the GTX 1660ti pushes past the hinge of the screen, so you have the fans and video components jut out about an inch from where the base of the screen rests

Nice Entry-level Gaming Laptop with "meh" Battery Life and Annoying Lenovo Bloatware Installed

 The right USB does this less so I use that one. I haven't done any heavy gaming yet so I can't attest to its performance there yet, but so far the airflow during heavy usage seems good and the keyboard is very decent. Also, the webcam has a built-in manual slider to block/unblock it which was a cool bonus.

This is my 3rd Legion 5 laptop. I got the 1st one from Walmart with the following specs: 4600H Ryzen 5, 120HZ 250 nits screen, 256 GB SSD + 1TB HDD, and only a GTX 1650ti.   As from my screenshots, the Lenovo Vantage software is a simple software to tweak your laptop and it features overclocking your GPU, only when performance mode is enabled. You can also choose to overdrive the screen response time which videos from Jarrod's tech shows the difference and I would recommend turning this feature on.  The screen also has a yellowish tint to it when white is displayed on the screen, a slight annoyance that I manage to fix within the Radeon settings with the color settings. The screen is sorta usable outdoors

It was on sale and I was able to get it cheaper through my work for $1450ish, but I would be surprised if it doesn’t go on sale again soon. I love it so far, it can run any game I’ve tried on max settings at 1080p at least, and the 4K screen is beautiful. The only issue is the battery life, so I pretty much always have it plugged in whenever I use it. I’d recommend it if you can find a good deal and don’t mind short battery life

I got my bonus, and I haven't had a laptop to call "my own" in 3 years; been using work laptops. With black Friday around the corner. I've been torn between some different options with similar specs.

EDIT3: It seems its narrowing down..

again, all competing laptops have some general similarities in processor, ram, ports. differences are mainly in discrete gpu and other minor one offs.


XPS 15  (9500, GTX 1650): Pros: Solid, respected, legit hardware, battery life. Cons: HEAT! searches show burning people or getting ridiculous hot when just running chrome...
HP Spectre x360 2020 ( 15t-eb000, GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q): Pros, versatility, solid construction, sound, pen (yeah, ridiculous), cons: heat? setting changes can mitigate or maybe switch to intel graphics, battery life is so-so...
HP Envy ( 15-ep0098nr, RTX 2060 Max-Q): Pros, RTX 2060!! Vapor chamber for cooling! faster ram (2933 vs 2666). Cons: Wobbly screen, screen door in AMOLED (only option for this), poor sound, poor battery due to 2060 as expected.
Might add lenovo yoga 9i if i can find it in the price point....

EDIT2 (because it seems vital to clarify): "Bro, get a gaming laptop" isn't going to work. Imagine going into a suite and tie meeting with a HP Omen that the CEO's kid uses to play fortnite (dumb example). I think i'm triggering teens with my budget and life laptop choices.  Touchscreen, discrete GPU for moderate gaming, thunderbolt/displayport, well rounded, reliable.

My background: My first computer build was 30 years ago. I play many things including Arma 3 (which is not your normal gamer i'd say), I had a NEC PowerVR; I had a 3dfx voodoo (with the passthru). I have a razer mouse in its original circular tin from 25 years ago. I'm asking here because I *hate* prebuilt desktops, so laptops scare me equally; can't upgrade later. To get that price down there's a tradeoff someplace - I just want to make sure i know what it is. And hopefully its not lipstick on a pig (or Costco saying its got 16gb of RAM because it has an 12gb optane and 4 gb of ddr - for example). What would Linus do? (besides buy two laptops).

Thermals keep coming up as a dealbreaker so i guess i need to get feedback or research there.

I am looking for a laptop that is very versatile, well-rounded even, can use for personal work/family/design,  and "oh, hey, it runs video games!" - Not a extreme powerhouse that gets the top tier FPS of all laptops (but hey, if thats in there too, lets do it). Oh and to make this super hard.. it has to have a touch screen! "Challenge Accepted"?

I feel that dell is quality when it comes to XPS, and they aren't going to cut corners (like one stick of ram for 16gb; dual channel) (trying to sell optane while cutting cost on the ssd). Dell XPS feels like durability, but i dont know much about HP, except the computer i returned to best buy in 199x. Please, change my mind.

Does the speed of the processor and memory significantly offset/complement the version of the gpu? I have a GTX970 in my desktop (i7 4790k), and charts show it to be "faster" than a GTX1650 (mobile). wow.

again, all competing laptops have some general similarities in processor, ram, ports. differences are mainly in discrete gpu and other minor one offs.

<li>HP Spectre x360 2020 ( 15t-eb000, GTX 1650 Ti Max-Q): Pros, versatility, solid construction, sound, pen (yeah, ridiculous), cons: heat? setting changes can mitigate or maybe switch to intel graphics, battery life is so-so...</li>
<li>HP Envy ( 15-ep0098nr, RTX 2060 Max-Q): Pros, RTX 2060!! Vapor chamber for cooling! faster ram (2933 vs 2666). Cons: Wobbly screen, screen door in AMOLED (only option for this), poor sound, poor battery due to 2060 as expected.</li>
<li>Might add lenovo yoga 9i if i can find it in the price point....</li>

I think i&#39;m triggering teens with my budget and <del>life</del> laptop choices. Touchscreen, discrete GPU for moderate gaming, thunderbolt/displayport, well rounded, reliable.

My background: My first computer build was 30 years ago. I play many things including Arma 3 (which is not your normal gamer i&#39;d say), I had a NEC PowerVR; I had a 3dfx voodoo (with the passthru). I have a razer mouse in its original circular tin from 25 years ago. I&#39;m asking here because I *hate* prebuilt desktops, so laptops scare me equally; can&#39;t upgrade later. To get that price down there&#39;s a tradeoff someplace - I just want to make sure i know what it is. And hopefully its not lipstick on a pig (or Costco saying its got 16gb of RAM because it has an 12gb optane and 4 gb of ddr - for example). What would Linus do? (besides buy two laptops).

Thermals keep coming up as a dealbreaker so i guess i need to get feedback or research there.

Wanting a Gaming Laptop with GTX/RTX and touch screen? That's blasphemy!

After a looot of research and self-examination on what i really need i think i might have found an excellent choice :  the HP envy 14 (2021).It is equipped with an i5 1135g7, a GTX 1650ti MAX-Q (the same on the super expensive dell Xps 15),16 GB of RAM(soldered) and 512GB of storage. From the reviews i have seen it has a pretty good build quality, with excellent 16:10 FHD screen, good speakers and comfortable keyboard. The really interesting thing about this laptop is its performance, it has a really good cooling system with dual fans and big heat pipes, and for this reason it is able to use the i5 at max of its potential even outperforming similar i7 models (a ryzen would have been a better choice for this laptop however)
