Obviously, we have to consider the electronics we're going to be using with the ls50 meta, so that means the amplifier and then to slightly lesser extent, the dac and the streamer, because those things are already built in to the ls50 wireless 2., it's fixed. So what we have to ask ourselves is how does the ls50 meta when paired with the nad and the ship mode e3 and the raspberry pi 4, or the hegel h95? How does that passive base system compare to the ls50 wireless ii? We need to talk a little bit about money just quickly, though um the hegel, h95, 1650 euros, dak and streamer built in the nad with the the [ __ ] and the pie

 So this is going to be quite a long, video, so brace yourselves. So just like the active version, the ls50 wireless 2, the ls50 meta - is so named because it has meta materials inside so at the back of the tweeter there's a disk which absorbs the back wave of the tweeter, because we only want the front wave coming forward To us now did you know that the metamaterial disc starts to work at 620 hertz and because of the way it changed, the voicing of the tweeter and the upper mid-range kef also had to redesign the the tweeter gap dampener. So that's like the dampener that sits between where the the tweeter ring ends and the the coaxially aligned mid-range bass driver starts, and they also had to strengthen the wave guide. The tangerine is called the tensioning waveguide

 If we give the ls50 meta more in amplifiers and source quality, because, let's not forget, the hegel also has an excellent streamer and dac inside. So that's probably part of it. The more we give the s50 meter the more it reveals, more so than the original. The original is not as revealing not in terms of partnering electronics, so yeah the the new model is better

 Now we're gon na break for coffee and then, when we come back, we're gon na talk about how the ls50 meta plus outboard amplifier compares to the ls50 wireless ii. we're going to look at the blue one which is the  

ls50 meter the new one compare it to the old ls50 
the white one and then ultimately compare it to

result of that meta material so getting straight 
into comparisons old ls50 versus new ls50 meta  

let's not get ahead of ourselves this is not a 
transformed speaker the original was fantastic  

this new one is fantastic and then a bit more 10 
20 percent better i don't know some of you people  

want numbers that's probably the numbers i would 
put on it but it's not a whole new speaker not  

at all it's just like an improved ls50 improved 
how well firstly we get more mid-range clarity  

especially in the upper mids lower treble i 
was playing tom waits's way down in the hole  

and what i noticed was it wasn't just that 
the the mid-range his voice was clearer it  

was just it stepped forward in the sound stage 
so imagine you're listening to me instead of it  

being here it's now here level with the speaker 
plane previously it was behind the speaker plane  

and then the second improvement treble smoothness  

the top end on the ls50 meta is just a bit 
smoother than on the outgoing ls50 but i will say  

this right if you can score a heavily discounted 
pair of ls50 right now the original one you would  

be getting the bargain of a decade because i think 
they're running out for half price i don't know  

so just bear that in mind and if you've already 
got the original ls50 you still have an amazing  

speaker yes the new one is better and it's 
better at the same price as the old one  

that's important to note actually that kef 
did not increase the price still 1199 euros  

now because today we're 
talking passive loudspeakers  

the sound of the loudspeaker depends somewhat 
on the amplifier being used to the side  

to the side connected with loudspeaker cable 
you know what i mean like an external amplifier  

for this video i used two different amplifiers two 
integrated at two very different price points the  

first one the nad c316b what a name 369 euros and 
the second one the hegel h95 which is 1650 euros  

so those are the two amps that i use for this 
review if you're wondering what the new ls50  

meta sounds like with other amplifiers guess 
what i'm going to say next i don't know no idea  

didn't use them sorry so let's start with the nad 
i hooked that into the ls50 meta using audioquest  

rocket 88 loudspeaker cable you don't have to use 
anything as expensive as that of course you don't  

but what i noticed straight away the nad is as 
it was with the wharfdales rich meaty punchy
