 key factors affecting price. The nibs just feel different. I use steel nibs still (Lamy Al Star and Kaweco Sport), but they don’t quite compre to the Lamy 2000 or a vintage Parker Duofold. The latter two pens are heavier, use piston filling and button filling mechanisms, have gold nibs, and feel more carefully engineered

All the pens I have are below $30 and they all write very well. I would like to understand what is the difference between an expensive pen like Sailor or lamy 2000 and pilot metropolitan or twsbi swipe? I am not able to think of any difference in mechanics. So what is the differentiating factor?

What is the difference between an expensive and a $20 pen?

I don't like this pen I was expecting something of higher quality, especially for the money, but it turned out to be a cheap plastic pen. Writes ok but nothing special, I'd recommend buying something else.

(SEE UPDATE BELOW) Under impressed. First impression: The pen feels cheap. It comes in a flimsy cardboard box and was supposed to have a starter ink cartridge, which it did not. Based on my lowered expectations, I will give the pen a few days once I get an ink cartridge then do a followup to this review

Under-impressed...at first...but

 I find the plastic in the Sport to be a bit more flimsy than the TWSBI and the Safari. Not bad, but not quite as good.

I have not tried a Pilot Kakuno so I can't say much here other than it is definitely the most inexpensive. The new ones with the traditional Japanese design motifs on them are pretty dang cool though.

What fountain pen do you recommend for my first purchase? I’ve never written with a fountain pen. Hopefully this doesn’t belong on

Starter Pen?

  The only good attributes of this pen are its compactness and how incredibly lightweight it is. This makes it a decent pen to take on the go, but it could be way better. In conclusion, if you want a Kaweco sport buy the version with a medium nib, since it will let the ink flow easier. I really wanted to like the pen, but it was more of a disappointment to me

  Yes, inexpensive pens like the platinum preppy are a great value but they sometimes have downsides like fragility or inability to disassemble them.  Ideally a pen won't require being taken apart many times, but some inks are more difficult to clean then others like shimmer inks and pigmented inks for fountain pens and it's easier to change inks when the old one is removed easier.   

 It's elegant in that it is simply functional.  It doesn't set my heart on fire but I enjoy it.  

So I’m in the process of trying to buy my first fountain pen but I am a complete beginner with no knowledge whatsoever. 

Any suggestions? Things I should consider?

The learning curve was nonexistent to me, as I’ve used fountain pens all my life, but I have let people borrow mine with the note “use it like a normal pen, just don’t press on it”. It really is as simple as that

My first question is: My handwriting is pretty horrendous. I write super fast, but can write well if I slow down and think about it. My cursive is quite good though. Will this kind of pen be unusable for me? Can I write with it similarly to a normal pen? How big is the learning curve?

Secondly, what are some SUPER cheap fountain pens I can get just to try out. I saw a couple disposable ones that looked attractive, but some advice would be appreciated.

Lastly, what are your reasons for using a fountain pen?

<p>Edit: Thanks for the help! Bought a pilot varsity, and after discovering the appeal of the pens, I have just ordered a Lamy safari. I still dont see myself ever spending more than 30 on a pen, but maybe I&#39;ll be sucked deeper into this hobby later on.</p>

Newcomer wanting to get into fountain pens, had a couple small questions

I'm looking for a fountain pen that can be left for weeks/months inked up without drying out. So far I think TWSBI Eco's are good pens for this, but can't find where I read/saw/heard this. Does anyone here have any recommendations?

 The build is genius with having the fin of the pen to prevent it from rolling around the table. The nib itself feels very smooth and is able to produce that classic Fude nib style while writing.

 Two of the 12 pens is a solid white pen and a clear pen that looks amazing. Overall, the grip is very comfortable, with allows for multiple writing angles, which is needed with a bend nib. Also, the feel of the pen overall is good. It fits in my hand and its weight is light, but not too light

Fun colorful pens that work very well.

 Went online to buy 12 different ink cartridges. Impossible. Set of six dull colors was the best I could find unless I wanted to buy very expensive specialty inks by the bottle. Not sure what to do with them-- wouldn't gift them because-- no ink-- and can't really return them as they were a gift
