KABAR kukri vs Cold Steel Gladius

It's a little more tactical and a little more expensive than you're looking for, but when I was doing forestry work I really liked my Kabar Kukri machete. That thing would cut through 4" grape vines if you swung hard enough.

I tend to rate products on a cost-driven curve, so keep that in mind when reading. I went with three stars simply due to what I view as the relatively low price paid for the product.

Personally I would definitely go with the Kabar. They make quality stuff and the blade profile is a good utility shape while remaining strong.

In fact I am glad to have the opportunity to make a custom grind angle leaving the bevel at the tip more obtuse and “apple seed” shaped creating a stronger point than a normal version of this item would have. I would be curious if anyone else has received a blade in this condition, I assume the quality control person at the factory was hung over and or drunk that day. It happens to the best of us.

Major con is the handle. It is LOOSE, and it’s molded construction doesn’t allow me to tighten it.

Let me go over to this island here see if we can uh hack around a bit of some of this stuff along the shore, all right, getting my uh machete out here...

I used to get a knife and get upset after a few days simply because I didn't think it was ' good enough'. A lot of knives broke. A lot of money was wasted on junk knives that had hypocritical good looks about them at the flea market. But ALL THOSE HARD SHIPS WERE WORTH IT!! - even for just this one knife! What I am trying to say is that all that was worth it just for this knife

Good investment in my book. I especially like the sheath. I think it would be prettier if it were all leather, but the main thing is that it's really functional. I wore it on my left hip during a day of heaving yard work, with lots of bending and squatting, and a couple trips to the store for supplies

not a huge deal however the uneven edges were a huge disappointment and no product people pay decent money for should be so irregular coming from a reputable company such as cold steel, no excuse for crappy quality workmanship. sheath was of decent quality but a bit on the cumbersome side when drawing or replacing blade so i'll see about modifying it to suit my needs or have a custom one made. that said it is sturdy and should do what it is meant for, just wish they'd make a quality true sword version of the gladius under their far superior sword line. would have rated it lower but really for the $25 it cost I wasn't really expecting a showpiece and it is a lot of fun to use

The only reason this is not 5 stars is because I don't feel I have fully tested her durability yet, though she seems mighty sturdy. Also, I like the style of the sheath, with its hanging D-ring swivel, but the blade cut through the stitching the 5th or 6th time I slid her in. I guess that's bound to happen eventually, but still. For the price, if you are thinking about buying one, do it now

Other than that is seems very sturdy and rugged. Overall I am impressed if o ly by the value of this piece..

The forward curve of the blade is enough to give the leading edge a lot of weight to your blows but not so curved as to be unwieldy for most people. The blade features a full tang, which I always prefer in a tool like this. The full tang gives added weight and control to your swings when chopping. The edge of the blade stays sharp and sharpens easily

Breaks are not. I used it to limb lots of downed branches following a severe storm. It worked acceptably, but it's heavy. The tip didn't prove fragile but I wasn't deliberately abusing it
