You might not even fully realize just how much you want a ski like this. For high-volume ski touring, steep-and-rowdy firm-snow ski mountaineering, and work-week, headlamp exercise skinning, a lightweight set-up based on the K2 WayBack 80 is just the ticket. The featherweight construction flies uphill. The narrow and stiff construction grabs on the steeps but gets bucked around in tougher snow. 
This is a specialized tool. You won't pick these for day-to-day backcountry skiing. Deep, perfect powder snow is enjoyable, but bigger guns will be even more fun. Any sort of poor snow &#40;breakable crust? Slop?&#41; is better handled by a bigger and heavier option. All small skis are under-equipped for tough snow, but the K2 does better than most. It is this ski's more forgiving tough-snow performance that edges it ahead of other close competitors.

Obviously I won't be taking these out for powder laps but for long/fast and/or late season missions this is a great choice at a great price. Match them with a race binding (I mounted a Plum 150), light boots and race skins and you'll have a setup you won&#39;t mind hiking with to find snow in mid summer.

I got these for late spring/summer use and couldn't be happier. They are very light but can still be skied hard. I have found they shine on steep icy slopes (skied bulletproof on Temple SW) and they handle those horrible summer sun cups just fine. Compared to the Waybacks 88s I find they are a bit less grabby in breakable crusts and easier to control on steep ice

 Like you said, these rails are built right into the ski, it's not a plate that's drilled onto the ski and then the binding is attached to it, it's integrated into the ski. So that really cuts down on lost energy, it's a very efficient way to get energy from your boot to the ski. Among system bindings out there, this is easily one of the best. Yeah, it's built right in

 Now I know the first time that you skied these, and I know this because I was following you with a camera, the conditions were less than ideal. I think that brings up an interesting point about these skis, RTM stood for or stands for Ride the Mountain, which is suggesting more than just a carving ski, it's really like an all-mountain ski, go ride the whole mountain. As these replace that, I think it's important to talk about their all-mountain ability. You skied them, like I said, you skied them in some kind of iffy, choppy snow conditions

 Among system bindings out there, this is easily one of the best. Yeah, it's built right in. Yeah, so that's it. That's the Deacon 84, definitely really impressive stuff

 It's been a little while since we've done one of these ski reviews.

 And those are all content in the 2020 ski test results that we just released.

 Bob and I both work on the ski test quite a bit, from writing to video editing to the

 initial conceptualizing and planning and filming and all that stuff.

 So really exciting for us to see it published and out there.

 We've got some really good questions on certain skis so far.

 I think we had 149 last year, so a pretty significant increase in the amount of skis

 A lot of people were asking about Black Crows over the past year or so.

 We are a Black Crows dealer now too, which is exciting.

 A couple other new brands in the ski test as well.

 But that's not necessarily all that we're here to talk about today.

 Today is our first more in-depth review in a little while.

 And we are looking at this Deakin 84 behind me.

 We've both had a chance to ski it, luckily in some varying terrain and at different mountains,

 But yeah, Bob, what can you tell me about this new ski from Volkl?

 They're replacing this RTM 84, which has been a staple of that frontside all-mountain category

 for, I think I looked it up, I think it was 2012 was the first RTM 84.
