You might not even fully realize just how much you want a ski like this. For high-volume ski touring, steep-and-rowdy firm-snow ski mountaineering, and work-week, headlamp exercise skinning, a lightweight set-up based on the K2 WayBack 80 is just the ticket. The featherweight construction flies uphill. The narrow and stiff construction grabs on the steeps but gets bucked around in tougher snow. 
This is a specialized tool. You won't pick these for day-to-day backcountry skiing. Deep, perfect powder snow is enjoyable, but bigger guns will be even more fun. Any sort of poor snow &#40;breakable crust? Slop?&#41; is better handled by a bigger and heavier option. All small skis are under-equipped for tough snow, but the K2 does better than most. It is this ski's more forgiving tough-snow performance that edges it ahead of other close competitors.

Obviously I won't be taking these out for powder laps but for long/fast and/or late season missions this is a great choice at a great price. Match them with a race binding (I mounted a Plum 150), light boots and race skins and you'll have a setup you won&#39;t mind hiking with to find snow in mid summer.

I got these for late spring/summer use and couldn't be happier. They are very light but can still be skied hard. I have found they shine on steep icy slopes (skied bulletproof on Temple SW) and they handle those horrible summer sun cups just fine. Compared to the Waybacks 88s I find they are a bit less grabby in breakable crusts and easier to control on steep ice

 And then we get some nice tip-and-tail rocker as well. So right about where this vertical sidewall ends and that drive tip continues is where we see the rocker start. Pretty smart way of building a ski where the edge part where you're getting that initial edge contact does have that vertical sidewall there, more of a cap construction here in the shovel. And then same thing in the tail, where that sidewall portion ends here, which is about where that tail rocker starts

 Goes pretty well with the shorter turn radius. This is a 176 and we have a 16-meter arc. So that's kind of on the short side and we've seen that trend a little bit over the past few years of these shorter turn radius skis in this all-mountain format. This makes it easier and more user-friendly to get the ski up on edge and around in a clean carve, and most skiers are going to be able to access the entirety of that side cut, especially in this basalt ski, which is a little bit more flexible than we see with that TI version

 On the scale here, we're about 3,100 grams, again, a lot of that does come from here to here, but you're getting that stability underfoot, which is really nice. Pretty all-mountain, you know, well-rounded in terms of rocker profile and taper shape. Some nice positive camber underfoot. You know, that really gives you nice snap and energy out of the turn

 Still a great all-mountain choice for intermediate to advanced skiers.

 Maybe you want something a little bit lighter, a little bit more maneuverable than the 86

 TI, which has two sheets of metal in it.

 They kind of take this volcanic rock and stretch it out, turn it into fibers.

 We see a lot of it used in cross-country skis, mostly because of its lightweight benefits,

 but it also gives a good amount of energy to the ski.

 So it's an interesting construction technique for sure.

 Rossignol uses it a lot, like I said, especially in their cross-country models.

 So it's a proven technology, works really well for this ski in terms of having it be

 that mid-width all-mountain ski without being too heavy, light, maneuverable and quick for

 We just really have a soft spot for these mid-80s all-mountain skis, kind of with a

 more frontside shape on this experience.

 It gives it more of that on-trail personality and character.

 But we do see that popular woodcore with the basalt fibers.
