iRobot Roomba S9 vs iRobot Roomba J7+

I’m currently trial running several auto-empty vacs for our upstairs which has our 4 bedrooms and all carpet. Currently a few weeks into the Roomba S9+ with empty bin and let me just say… while it does a good job picking up on our low rise carpet, the app and technology feels about 5 years behind the Roborock tech and app. If anyone cares about specifics feel free to ask but I’m constantly surprised how poor the app and tech work. Ghost rooms, connection failures, inaccurate post run results… considering how long iRobot has been in the game I’m just really surprised it’s this far behind

What worked for me to help sort out some kinks with the robot cleaning and it’s job success rate was doing a mapping run right after getting the update. Sorted out all the kinks in how well it performed.

I also can not use the function where you look at the photos with my iphone 11 pro max. I was finally able to do the set up using my OLD ipad air 2. I find it unacceptable that the app will not work for one of the main features or to set it up, using my newish Iphone on the latest iOS software. In talking to other users this problem is common

This robot vacuum has improved in many areas. Great suction, flawless operation (most of the time), and wonderful battery longevity. Sadly, it has regressed in others. Namely, the filtration system; why have they decided to sacrifice the pre-filter mesh and opt for more frequent cleaning and ultimately filter replacements

I ordered this product last week and it arrived a few days later. I ordered the combination that had extra filters, rollers, and brushes since I have 4 kids and 4 animals in my home. I should mention, I have a German Shepherd that is constantly shedding and a long-haired Siamese cat. Between these two animals, I should sweep daily, but I don't have that kind of time, so I splurged on the Roomba

Even though the area was completely clear. The problem is due to the lower clearance from the upgraded suction unit, the edge brush get's deformed and smacks the bumper and screws up the sensors. One could probably modify the brush, but I didn't want to deal with it. iRobot says the s9 has 4x the suction of other Roombas, I don't doubt this

iRobot does not release suction power stats but says that the j7 is 10 times stronger than its entry-level Roomba 600, whereas the s9 is 40 times stronger. The j7 is just fine for regular dirt and debris, and even if you have more challenging tasks (copious kitty litter, for example), it’s hard to recommend the $250 upgrade to the s9, as you don’t get the obstacle navigation features. In my testing of the s9, it routinely fell prey to socks and charging cables.

Having two points for the dust to exit creates poor suction and I ALWAYS have to empty the dust bin manually. It always dies out in the middle of the house, and is constantly getting stuck. The app is nice but it will randomly wipe our map away like we have never used it before. The battery dies SO fast that if I want it to clean our entire first floor (We live in a 1,800 sqft home so maybe 1,200 sqft) I have to run it on low suction which I feel like barely makes a difference

If I try to mechanically / physically raise the spring contacts, I risk breaking them and making it all the worse. Those should be able and EASY to replace, without needing to disassemble the whole vacuum.

Easy to set up the "dividers" and "room assignments", and "clean zones" 3. Nice to be able to do a quick small job using the room assignments. 4. The self emptying feature is nice While the pros are good, I post them with a grain of salt because they don't always work as they should

I don’t recall the error code but it was common with many S9+ that were released around Christmas 2020 but whatever it was, when that error struck, your Roomba was dead. You’d expect better from a $1K machine. Whatever the case, in the 2 days it worked, it was ridiculously loud compared to the s7, was the rudest little bugger ever (pushing chairs out of the way, knocking things over), and it did a half-ass job cleaning things.

For the price it is a HUGE waste of money. Do your self a favor and buy a cheaper one. Hopefully the quality hasn't gone down on them.

For now, I say, if you have the funds, and you don't have the time to regularly vacuum, this is worth the price.

The Roomba 960 does that just fine, as does the RoboRock S6 Pure (which I also got after returning this). So IMO there is no legitimate excuse for this fundamentally flawed mechanical design of the Roomba S9.

I can't imagine going forward they will keep this design. If you live in a small apartment then you should definitely be aware that you will be disturbing your neighbors or yourself when it self empties. It's louder than my large shop vac.
