I’m currently trial running several auto-empty vacs for our upstairs which has our 4 bedrooms and all carpet. Currently a few weeks into the Roomba S9+ with empty bin and let me just say… while it does a good job picking up on our low rise carpet, the app and technology feels about 5 years behind the Roborock tech and app. If anyone cares about specifics feel free to ask but I’m constantly surprised how poor the app and tech work. Ghost rooms, connection failures, inaccurate post run results… considering how long iRobot has been in the game I’m just really surprised it’s this far behind

 I was worried that the new D shape would make it a little more cumbersome for fitting around chairs and table legs. But if you look at it, the Roomba is less wide by about an inch than the other D shaped BOTS, which makes a lot of difference for fitting in tight spaces. I found it was better than any round robot, including the i7, with edge and corner cleaning. Partly because of its shape, it wasn't perfect, but it was a huge improvement over the i7 plus the battery life on the s9 was better in a few ways

 The main change on the s9s clean base was an upgraded filter, so right out of the box. The first thing I tested was the power and it's a beast: it has two power settings and an auto mode, but on high power we measured it at a whopping 22 CFM, which is the highest I've ever measured for context. The Roomba 690 measured 7 CFM, the 980 and i7 were 17 CFM, and the previous champion was the Neto d7, which measured 20 CFM. So we have a new most powerful robot vacuum

Great Robot Vac with a few design quirks.

 Even though the area was completely clear. The problem is due to the lower clearance from the upgraded suction unit, the edge brush get's deformed and smacks the bumper and screws up the sensors. One could probably modify the brush, but I didn't want to deal with it. iRobot says the s9 has 4x the suction of other Roombas, I don't doubt this

Not for high pile carpet

**Roomba S9+:** More powerful but didn’t feel worth it for the price. Didn’t have a lidar. 1099$.

When it works, it works flawlessly. It really picks up ANYTHING. It even picked up a whole heap of coins that was somehow on the floor.

If I try to mechanically / physically raise the spring contacts, I risk breaking them and making it all the worse. Those should be able and EASY to replace, without needing to disassemble the whole vacuum.

Having to "fix" such a device so it works properly is evidence of bad design. Even worse, when contacting support, the only thing they can do is offer to send a replacement lid, which is not where the problem resides.

But the real problem is that there is a horrible design issue, which should not happen on a device so expensive. There is a persistent "close the lid" problem given that the spring contacts on the body of the S9 are TOO SHORT to reach the contacts on the lid. It is necessary to apply pressure on the closed lid over where the contacts are so that it detects them, or add a bit of aluminum foil with duct tape so that the inner contacts are "larger".

I don’t recall the error code but it was common with many S9+ that were released around Christmas 2020 but whatever it was, when that error struck, your Roomba was dead. You’d expect better from a $1K machine. Whatever the case, in the 2 days it worked, it was ridiculously loud compared to the s7, was the rudest little bugger ever (pushing chairs out of the way, knocking things over), and it did a half-ass job cleaning things.

We have a mixture of hardwood, tile and carpet ( as well as area rugs). I do love the auto-emptying on my Roomba, but I don't love certain things like the constant replacement of the brush extractors and sometimes wonky navigation. If I did go with the s7, I would probably spring for the self-empty bin for that.
