This robot was outstanding at picking up nearly every last bit of the sample messes we scattered, partly due to its unique dual counter-rotating rubber brushes. We appreciated that it would periodically dock to recharge and empty its own bin (the dock holds replaceable vacuum cleaner bags) before returning to cleaning. It quickly mapped multiple rooms accurately, making it easy to set cleaning schedules and assign it to specific rooms on demand. Its app wasn’t always the most user-friendly, with some tasks taking multiple steps, but it was adequate. One caveat: While the manufacturer guarantees that this robot avoids pet “accidents,” it didn’t do so consistently: Sometimes it was remarkably clever in dodging the larger pieces of soft plastic dog poo we placed on the floor, but it plowed right over small ones. It did avoid electrical cords as promised. We liked that this robot can be set to start cleaning when it detects that you have left the house and stop when you return, using the location on your phone or by linking to other smart home features such as your door locks. The iRobot Roomba j7+ is a solid performer in CR’s tests, and that includes an Excellent score on bare floors. The manufacturer says the vacuum has smart mapping technology that allows it to learn, map, and adapt to the areas to be cleaned. Once the robot is docked, a vacuum in the docking station automatically sucks the contents from the bin into an enclosed disposable bag in the base.

CR’s take: The iRobot Roomba j7+ builds on the same robotic core as the Roomba i3 Evo above and earns similar scores on most of our tests. But the Roomba j7+’s navigation system is much more advanced. For starters, it can learn Smart Maps for multiple levels of your home (instead of just one floor, as with the i3 Evo), so you can use a smartphone app to tell it to clean certain rooms and skip others. But the most significant upgrade is the j7+’s obstacle-avoidance system. It uses a camera on the front of the bot to recognize certain hazards, including socks, clothes, towels, and—drumroll, please—pet waste. Once it spots a hazard, the j7+ adjusts its cleaning path to make sure it doesn’t snarl (or smear) the obstacle. CR has not tested this particular feature. Worth noting: iRobot promises that it’ll replace the vacuum if it fails to avoid pet waste in the first year after purchase. One downside of that front-facing camera: The Roomba j7+ is the only iRobot model that falls short of our top rating for data security.Another option to consider is the lower-priced Roomba i7+, which has the same cleaning system and Smart Map capabilities as the j7+ but doesn’t have the obstacle-avoidance feature. Expected More - Let Down

 I also can not use the function where you look at the photos with my iphone 11 pro max. I was finally able to do the set up using my OLD ipad air 2. I find it unacceptable that the app will not work for one of the main features or to set it up, using my newish Iphone on the latest iOS software. In talking to other users this problem is common

 This model does an great job on hard surfaces but does not really do the greatest job on carpet compared to my older 980 which had a carpet boost setting that most of the other 900 robots lacked. I also liked that I could set my 980 to focus on cleaning and could turn off edge clean. It's probably silly on my part but I like to see the neat lines on my carpet after it cleans and it seems to do the back and forth cleaning with the j7 and then go around the edges so I see these deep marks on the edges and going around any furniture. I liked that I could turn that off with my 980 so I just saw neat rows

 I could always go turn it on once in awhile but honestly that edge feature is more important with hard floors, than it is with carpet.  One other thing I find odd is that the app shows me carpet the robot has detected, yet there are no settings for changing vac power level and it does not act differently on carpet, so why is the thing worried about detecting my carpet?  I ended up having to set it to clean twice once one way and once across what it vacuumed to get it as clean as it got it with my 980 alone. I probably would have been better off going with the s9 for carpet but I did not want to pay that much and upstairs there is not as much dirt so it does and acceptable job. I just think they could have given it a little more power and more settings

 I did try turning it off and was hoping it would shut that light off but the light still is shining even with the feature turned off. It seems like it would waste power having that light on all the time and if I don't use the feature why is the light still on?  Ok so on to the actual vacuuming. Good But Some Glitches

Having two points for the dust to exit creates poor suction and I ALWAYS have to empty the dust bin manually. It always dies out in the middle of the house, and is constantly getting stuck. The app is nice but it will randomly wipe our map away like we have never used it before. The battery dies SO fast that if I want it to clean our entire first floor (We live in a 1,800 sqft home so maybe 1,200 sqft) I have to run it on low suction which I feel like barely makes a difference

What worked for me to help sort out some kinks with the robot cleaning and it’s job success rate was doing a mapping run right after getting the update. Sorted out all the kinks in how well it performed. 

 For now, I say, if you have the funds, and you don't have the time to regularly vacuum, this is worth the price.

Robot vacuums have come a long way since the days I used to babysit my original Roomba (circa 2006), following it around to make sure it didn’t thrash around on a threshold or ignore the miniature lighthouses and trundle unseeingly into a no-go zone. Back then, my biggest issue was coming home to a robot vacuum that had gone about 10 minutes into its cleanup route and been derailed by a shoe, sock, or dress-up wig.

 Floors can’t really be cleaned if they’re still littered with clutter. But if it means the bot won’t get tripped up by that stray cable you didn’t know was sitting under the couch or the pair of shoes your significant other carelessly discarded in its path, then there’s some benefit. 

 iRobot does not release suction power stats but says that the j7 is 10 times stronger than its entry-level Roomba 600, whereas the s9 is 40 times stronger. The j7 is just fine for regular dirt and debris, and even if you have more challenging tasks (copious kitty litter, for example), it’s hard to recommend the $250 upgrade to the s9, as you don’t get the obstacle navigation features. In my testing of the s9, it routinely fell prey to socks and charging cables.

Where things diverge significantly is battery life — the Roomba can go an impressive 1 hour and 45 minutes on one charge, whereas the Jet Bot tops out at an hour on full power. Both will go back to the base, recharge, and resume, but the Jet Bot took almost twice as long to clean our entire downstairs living area as the Roomba because it had to recharge in the middle while the Roomba could do the whole space in one go.

Home robots are getting smarter

 I can't imagine going forward they will keep this design. If you live in a small apartment then you should definitely be aware that you will be disturbing your neighbors or yourself when it self empties. It's louder than my large shop vac.

The good and bad

I ordered this product last week and it arrived a few days later. I ordered the combination that had extra filters, rollers, and brushes since I have 4 kids and 4 animals in my home. I should mention, I have a German Shepherd that is constantly shedding and a long-haired Siamese cat. Between these two animals, I should sweep daily, but I don't have that kind of time, so I splurged on the Roomba

The Shark ION Robot is designed with a Tri-Brush System, combining side brushes, channel brushes, and a multi-surface brushroll to handle debris on all surfaces, corners, and edges. Use the SharkClean app or voice control with Alexa or Google Assistant to start cleaning from anywhere.

This simple, comparatively inexpensive robot was unstoppable; it randomly travels around a space, bouncing off walls and furniture, so it ended up picking up much more dirt and covering the space more thoroughly than so-called “smarter” robots with fancier navigation systems. When we set it to clean, either via the app or by pushing a button on top of the robot, it typically ran more than 1½ hours at a time, chugging along while most other robots we were testing returned exhausted to their docks. It’s also easy to operate, clean out, and maintain. Its app is pretty basic but lets you schedule cleaning.

 In our clutter room testing, we again see its random cleaning pattern and we again see reasonably good even coverage. A problem area in this test for many other random passing robots we tested was the area underneath the chair frame. Many other random robots we tested had trouble navigating around the chair legs to properly clean underneath the chair frame, but the shark did not appear to have any trouble navigating through the chair legs to properly clean in and around this area. Other important specifications and test results we considered for this review are summarized here: Note, especially how there are no boundary accessories like a magnetic strip for example, included with the Rv 761, though you can buy shark bot boundary strips separately and use them with the Rv 761 to limit where it can go in your home

 Side Brushes: Most other robot vacuums have side brushes with multiple bundles of fibers to maximize contact with and movement of debris per rotation of the side brush. The shark side brush design definitely hurts its Ed's performance, while the more traditional side brush design improves its performance. In our robot vacuum crevice test, the Rv 761 did not perform well on default power or on maximum power. Even after extensive run time, it still could not pull most of the debris out of the crevice used for this test on either power setting

 In our empty room testing, we see the shark's random cleaning pattern demonstrated quite well. It also gets good even coverage in this test. In our clutter room testing, we again see its random cleaning pattern and we again see reasonably good even coverage. A problem area in this test for many other random passing robots we tested was the area underneath the chair frame

 Its suction was measured at 0.27 kpa In our carpet stress test, the Rv 761 picked up all debris away from edges very well. This robot has a fairly narrow direct cleaning path as its brussel compartment is only five and a half inches wide. but with repeated movement over the same area, it was able to clean up most of the test area reasonably well over time

This is a review for the Shark Rv 761. The robot's airflow was measured at 11 Cfm. Its suction was measured at 0.27 kpa In our carpet stress test, the Rv 761 picked up all debris away from edges very well

While relatives have had them for years, this is MY first robot vacuum. In my opinion, this is the BEST budget vacuum at the price point. I purchased one on sale for $139. It was super easy to get started and watch it go with AMAZING results in the dustbin! Okay, so it was purchased to use at my parents' house, but I HAD to test it, right? :) Now, it worked so well, I immediately ordered 2 more (taking advantage of the $ale) and have 2 at my parents' house and one at my own

 If not for the incessant high speed collisions with everything in its path, I’d say that this is the quietest robot vac I’ve owned so far but the banging and the need to frequently rescue it renders that point negligible.  I can’t speak for Alexa integration, because that’s far more intrusive than anything i’d. ever have in my home but the app is effective for starting the vacuum while you’re away and monitoring cleaning time, just know that, if you start it while you’re away, you’ll likely need to find it and restart it as soon as you get home. At this point, I’m going to say that this machine cleans well, saves me a lot of effort and was well worth what I paid for it (because it was deeply discounted) but if you’re actually expecting one that is going to ever learn the layout of your home, you’re likely to be seriously disappointed

 Maybe a good compromise is to program it to run when you’re at home but nobody is trying to sleep or concentrate on anything important. Having owned a number of roombas and ilifes over the years, I believe that this shark model cleans as well as either of those brands but is a far dumber machine than the roomba. Not Even A Little Bit Smart

  The battery life stayed pretty consistent through this time period. A little disappointed the machine died so quickly when I really use it 2x a/4 hours a week at most. But on the other hand the company stands by their product and I’m getting a replacement. Thought I’d update my review about it
