We appreciated that it would periodically dock to recharge and empty its own bin (the dock holds replaceable vacuum cleaner bags) before returning to cleaning. It quickly mapped multiple rooms accurately, making it easy to set cleaning schedules and assign it to specific rooms on demand. Its app wasn’t always the most user-friendly, with some tasks taking multiple steps, but it was adequate. One caveat: While the manufacturer guarantees that this robot avoids pet “accidents,” it didn’t do so consistently: Sometimes it was remarkably clever in dodging the larger pieces of soft plastic dog poo we placed on the floor, but it plowed right over small ones. It did avoid electrical cords as promised. The iRobot Roomba j7+ is a solid performer in CR’s tests, and that includes an Excellent score on bare floors. The manufacturer says the vacuum has smart mapping technology that allows it to learn, map, and adapt to the areas to be cleaned. Once the robot is docked, a vacuum in the docking station automatically sucks the contents from the bin into an enclosed disposable bag in the base.

CR’s take: The iRobot Roomba j7+ builds on the same robotic core as the Roomba i3 Evo above and earns similar scores on most of our tests. But the Roomba j7+’s navigation system is much more advanced. For starters, it can learn Smart Maps for multiple levels of your home (instead of just one floor, as with the i3 Evo), so you can use a smartphone app to tell it to clean certain rooms and skip others. But the most significant upgrade is the j7+’s obstacle-avoidance system. It uses a camera on the front of the bot to recognize certain hazards, including socks, clothes, towels, and—drumroll, please—pet waste. Once it spots a hazard, the j7+ adjusts its cleaning path to make sure it doesn’t snarl (or smear) the obstacle. CR has not tested this particular feature. Worth noting: iRobot promises that it’ll replace the vacuum if it fails to avoid pet waste in the first year after purchase. Expected More - Let Down

 I also can not use the function where you look at the photos with my iphone 11 pro max. I was finally able to do the set up using my OLD ipad air 2. I find it unacceptable that the app will not work for one of the main features or to set it up, using my newish Iphone on the latest iOS software. In talking to other users this problem is common

 This model does an great job on hard surfaces but does not really do the greatest job on carpet compared to my older 980 which had a carpet boost setting that most of the other 900 robots lacked. I also liked that I could set my 980 to focus on cleaning and could turn off edge clean. It's probably silly on my part but I like to see the neat lines on my carpet after it cleans and it seems to do the back and forth cleaning with the j7 and then go around the edges so I see these deep marks on the edges and going around any furniture. I liked that I could turn that off with my 980 so I just saw neat rows

 I could always go turn it on once in awhile but honestly that edge feature is more important with hard floors, than it is with carpet.  One other thing I find odd is that the app shows me carpet the robot has detected, yet there are no settings for changing vac power level and it does not act differently on carpet, so why is the thing worried about detecting my carpet?  I ended up having to set it to clean twice once one way and once across what it vacuumed to get it as clean as it got it with my 980 alone. I probably would have been better off going with the s9 for carpet but I did not want to pay that much and upstairs there is not as much dirt so it does and acceptable job. I just think they could have given it a little more power and more settings

 I did try turning it off and was hoping it would shut that light off but the light still is shining even with the feature turned off. Good But Some Glitches

Having two points for the dust to exit creates poor suction and I ALWAYS have to empty the dust bin manually. It always dies out in the middle of the house, and is constantly getting stuck. The app is nice but it will randomly wipe our map away like we have never used it before. The battery dies SO fast that if I want it to clean our entire first floor (We live in a 1,800 sqft home so maybe 1,200 sqft) I have to run it on low suction which I feel like barely makes a difference

What worked for me to help sort out some kinks with the robot cleaning and it’s job success rate was doing a mapping run right after getting the update. Sorted out all the kinks in how well it performed. 

 For now, I say, if you have the funds, and you don't have the time to regularly vacuum, this is worth the price.

Robot vacuums have come a long way since the days I used to babysit my original Roomba (circa 2006), following it around to make sure it didn’t thrash around on a threshold or ignore the miniature lighthouses and trundle unseeingly into a no-go zone. Back then, my biggest issue was coming home to a robot vacuum that had gone about 10 minutes into its cleanup route and been derailed by a shoe, sock, or dress-up wig.

 Floors can’t really be cleaned if they’re still littered with clutter. But if it means the bot won’t get tripped up by that stray cable you didn’t know was sitting under the couch or the pair of shoes your significant other carelessly discarded in its path, then there’s some benefit. 

 iRobot does not release suction power stats but says that the j7 is 10 times stronger than its entry-level Roomba 600, whereas the s9 is 40 times stronger. The j7 is just fine for regular dirt and debris, and even if you have more challenging tasks (copious kitty litter, for example), it’s hard to recommend the $250 upgrade to the s9, as you don’t get the obstacle navigation features. In my testing of the s9, it routinely fell prey to socks and charging cables.

Where things diverge significantly is battery life — the Roomba can go an impressive 1 hour and 45 minutes on one charge, whereas the Jet Bot tops out at an hour on full power. Both will go back to the base, recharge, and resume, but the Jet Bot took almost twice as long to clean our entire downstairs living area as the Roomba because it had to recharge in the middle while the Roomba could do the whole space in one go.

Home robots are getting smarter

 I can't imagine going forward they will keep this design. If you live in a small apartment then you should definitely be aware that you will be disturbing your neighbors or yourself when it self empties. It's louder than my large shop vac.

The good and bad

I ordered this product last week and it arrived a few days later. I ordered the combination that had extra filters, rollers, and brushes since I have 4 kids and 4 animals in my home. I should mention, I have a German Shepherd that is constantly shedding and a long-haired Siamese cat. Between these two animals, I should sweep daily, but I don't have that kind of time, so I splurged on the Roomba

 Also, Rosie finds lifting herself onto the rugs a little bit of an obstacle. She will repeatedly try the rug at different points and if she finds a slightly flatter one, is able to get up onto the rug and clean it.  SUMMARY POSITIVES: We program Rosie to clean three days per week. Cleaning can be done while you're sleeping/at work--a big plus

HUGE Improvement Over Older Model Roombas.

My house has dog hair aplenty! Using the app can start the vacuum even if I’m not home. Normally I use when my dogs are outside. Under furniture cleaning is only as deep as the circulating fiber head. Normally runs 45 minutes before heading back to base to self empty

Hands free vacuuming and emptying

  The only con I see so far is that if it gets to far from the base and runs low on battery it may or may not make it back. Have had it for a week no and twice coming home from work I have had to return it to the base to charge. Once it was only a few feet away and didn't make it home. Please know it had just cleaned 600sqft of the 1,000sqft in 3+ hours so it's not a defective battery, but could use a software update to adjust the low power return setting

 It does an amazing job and the rubber rollers are a vast improvement as I no longer have to cut my wife and daughters hair out of the brushes. The self empty feature is a must and it's automatic return to the bin when full is great as it will then continue to clean after it empties itself. In addition it will pick up where it left off having to do two runs to complete the first floors 1,000 sqft.  Pro it is a power house cleaner that keeps the floors spotless cleaning up after a Goldendoodle, a 9 year old, 7 year old, and a wife with very long hair

 Because of the animals I am going to go through bags and filters and other parts maybe more quickly than "average" and the cost adds up. The app is clunky in that while it looks like one could assign various spaces to cleaning schedules, allowing more regular attention where it's needed, this particular model only has "clean everywhere" as an option.  The animals were freaked out initially but are pretty acclimated to it now. The cat has not yet decided to ride around on it, though :)  Is it worth it? It is to me - there is no way I would vacuum the place three times a week and I am liking the results

 I have it set for 3x a week, operation (I have a lightly shedding dog and a very-much-shedding cat) and then manually vacuum the living room rug and de-furify the furniture as needed.  Depending on the dirt level, the machine needs to recharge a couple of times during the process of cleaning a 1700 sq foot one floor home. This means it can take 6 hours or more to complete its task. If I was able to set it to start early in the AM it wouldn't be an issue but partner's sleep schedule dictates a noon start and I sometimes find the noise intrusive in the afternoon

Definitely keeps the house cleaner

PRO-I like the robot as I have two hairy German Shepards and need to vacuum daily. Works well on the hardwood and tile but bunches up the hair on the carpet which isn't that big of deal to pick up. CON- Loud! It sounds like a jet engine starting up and then the noise at the end is almost unbearable. This is not my first robot and the emptying noise was not like this at all on my 1st and 2nd one but they were a different brand

 This is actually quite easy if you follow the instructions. I already have a system so I needed "Add a Robot". There are instructions saying "allow local networks" and I admit I assumed this was already allowed and went through a bit of not being able to connect the robot. Once I actually allowed this connection I was rewarded with the robot being connected and ready to go

  3. Use?: First off this is a vacuum cleaner so it is not silent! But it is fairly quiet although I cannot imagine anyone using this in the middle of the night in the room they sleep in. Both this is like other IRobot in that it will sweep the rom and is quite good at recognizing obstacles and not simply running into them like my older robot. Also, because I have dogs, it was important to have these types of rollers as they will jam less frequently due to dog hair
