I’m currently sleeping on the 25+ year old mattress that I was conceived on. As you can imagine I’m very excited to graduate from this one for multiple reasons. 

After trying out a handful of different mattresses and understanding the ridiculous prices of some, I’ve come to the conclusions that 1) I prefer a medium/firm bed, and 2) I’m poor. I visited IKEA today and found the $500 Heston mattress (queen size). Curious if anyone has any experience with it, how it holds up, or any advice whatsoever. Thanks in advance!

Edit: I’m a 5’8” 160 lb male, and I’ll be sleeping in this mattress with my wonderful and tiny 5’0 girlfriend. We tend to sleep on our sides and stomachs.

my mother has severe spinal stenosis (several discs have broken down, she's had rods and screws installed with little benefit, as well as a torn glute repair. take care of your spines, kids.) she's 56, ~155, and sleeps on her back, prefers med-firm or firm. her gentleman companion says he's comfortable on whatever. while they were moving in together I bought them a zinus, warning them that it would break down fairly quickly and need to be replaced, and that it would be a pain when it did. the time has come.

she's up every night in serious pain, and sometimes doesn't bother trying to sleep at all. her job is very difficult and both emotionally and physically demanding, especially during covid. I don't feel like I can waste her time with a bunch of returns or DIYing something, though the zippered mattresses with layers seem doable.

she's willing to spend up to $3500 and is interested in latex or a latex hybrid for its lifespan. I'd like to avoid memory foam and memory foam hybrids because if the next mattress sags within five years I'm going to turn into the Joker.

currently looking at the Alexander nest hybrid or an Ikea hesstun mattress+good latex topper, since we live fairly close to an Ikea and a return would plausibly be easier than dealing with a mattress company.
can anyone point me in the right direction, or confirm my instincts?

 I got a queen size and was able to get it out of the box and on my platform alone (not that it was easy) and I'm a 58 year old woman. This mattress was so comfortable from the get-go -- not too hard, not too soft, just right! In the heat of the summer, I found it to be hotter than my old mattress despite my central air conditioning, but at the suggestion of a friend I purchased a bamboo mattress pad for $100 and that solved the problem. I have two herniated discs in my back from an injury in my 20s and I find it very comfortable. It's a very thick mattress so it is a little higher than I would have liked (I purchased a metal platform); however, I like that I can store four large storage bins underneath so I am living with the height

 However, the one design flaw that irritates me is that there is no reinforcement along the edge of the mattress. As a result, when I sit on the edge of the bed to put socks on, I slide off. I also fell out of bed once when I turned over close to the edge (this never happened with my old mattress). If I shared my queen bed with another person, that would be a problem; I just sleep in the middle now

I was replacing a conventional spring mattress and box spring that was 17 years old.  It also found it was a good choice for both back and side sleepers. The only other problem for me, and this has nothing to do with the mattress, is that the brackets I bought for the platform to attach my 30-year-old brass head- and foot-boards don't allow me to adequately attach the boards. I tried a mattress when at a furniture outlet in Gardner, MA that was even more comfortable, but it was also 3 times the price, so this is a great mattress for the money

You and your wife are too far apart in weight and worse yet she sleeps on side, needs a softer bed. You sleep on back and stomach, so you need something on the medium-firm/firm side.

2)Nest Bedding ASH, I bought it after I returned Casper. Smelled for 3-4 days. Still sleep on it.

I have sensory issues and it makes me sensitive to smells.  I bought a Casper mattress and the smell is horrendous.  I aired out the mattress for three days, left a fan blowing, and opened a window for lots of fresh air. When I finally made the bed, I couldn’t smell the mattress through the mattress cover after I put it on.  Two days later, the room smelled horribly again.  Our sheets, quilt, and top blanket all smell.  Also, the bed is super uncomfortable. I know it takes a while to get used to, but I’m only 102 lbs and it’s just too firm for me even though I’m a back sleeper mostly (sometimes side).


My partner says the mattress smells very strong and he’s not super sensitive to smell, so I know it’s bad.  Before we made the bed for the first time, we crawled around on it (at the suggestion of customer service) to help it dissipate quicker and it’s just didn’t do much. The smell keeps me up because it irritates me to the point of anger. It’s also caused headaches and breathing problems.  

Does anyone have any recommendations for mattresses for combo sleepers, maybe slightly softer than the Original Casper, that don’t smell as bad or for as long? I don’t want to suffocate in a mattress, but the Casper is a solid board.

Someone recommended Purple mattress to me, but I assume that would be pretty smelly too. I’m open to pillow top, however box mattress are appealing to me because I don’t really want someone random delivery person in my house right now.
