 great. They never look fingerprinty, they just always wear fantastic. You were saying

 as well, the EQ in some of these Ibanez basses are some of the most powerful EQs out there,

 They are very, very powerful, but very smooth.

 Very smooth. So with the 500 series, you get the one volume, you get the pickup balancer

 to go between the neck and the bridge pickup, or a nice blend of the two Bartolines. Three

 way EQ, your bass, you can boost or cut the treble, middle, and bass. There's two switches

 which often confuse people. One of them turns the EQ on and off, so you can either have

 it running passive or active, and the other kind of shifts which area of the mid you're

 changing, either 350 hertz, 450, or 700 hertz. You can alter all the different mid frequencies

 with that middle knob and that switch. But that's enough of me rambling. Let's hear some

 Moving to the center, so that's both pickups on.

 Just the front pickup on its own, which is always a nice sound, really fat sound.

 So, that was the new Color SR500 for 2019. Again, if you're not really familiar with

 the SR500, a couple more little specs, which I forgot to mention before. The truss rod

 adjustment is down at the neck heel, and it has a huge AccuCast bridge, which is super

 adjustable. You can make the intonation any way your little heart desires. I did get the

 mid frequency switch wrong as well. In the top, it's 250 hertz, 450 in the middle, then

 a whole 700 mid frequency sweep at the bottom. And when the EQ isn't engaged, the treble

 pot on the three band EQ is used as a normal tone control, cracking. And if you want to

Or at least no longer a great deal. 4-5 years ago back when they were US$275 new they were steals, but now that they're $430 plus tax and shipping, they're no longer this amazing moneyball solution, they're at best a decent bass at a fair price. In my opinion if you've got $500 to spend on a bass I'd get a used Mexican Fender or Ibanez SR500, that's where the real value is at that price point.

My question is: is the Sire a significant upgrade from the squier? I know it's got a roasted maple neck and all, but is that a big factor, if I'm going to distort my sound either way (I mainly play metal)?

[Question] What bass to go for as a beginner?

On the plus side, it's comfortable, nice to play, good quality for the price. The preamp offers many possibilities once you've figured out the controls, and it also has a passive mode. The pickups work well in both mode, and they have 4 wires so if you know how to solder you can add switches to get more sound options.

On one hand I have a Ibanez SR300eb and on the other a Marcus Miller Sire M2.
What are your opinion and which should I go with?

Ibanez vs Sire

the main reason to get a SR500 is I believe those are the cheapest Ibanez that have those sweet bartolini pickups. I have a 500 and it's great, I think if you get a used one in good condition and give it a proper setup it will make you very happy

I prefer playing alternative and metal hence wanting a 5-string (I play other genres for practice but we all have that style that makes us happy). I love me some Ibanez and am trying to decide between the sr300 and sr500. As far as I can see they have the same features but the sr505 improved hardware. Is there a noticeable difference in the two? 

I need to clarify that I am not a professional musician nor do I intend to become one. I just really like playing music as a hobby.

Ibanez SR305 vs SR505: worth the extra$?

Ibanez is pretty lightweight. The SR series by Ibanez is a good way to go. I used to own an SR500 and it was a great bass. It’s a bass I certainly miss and if you can find a pre-owned one in good shape they tend to be priced pretty reasonably

I ordered this new but noticed blemishes all over the front plate that indicated it had been used or perhaps refurbished. I wasn't concerned at the time as I figured I'm just a learner currently. Unfortunately, I have had a persistent issue with the strings severely rattling during my practice sessions. I did some research to affirm whether or not I was the one to blame and then took it to a professional; I had the action adjusted and did some practice with it in the shop and the professional said the problematic strings likely needed to be replaced

I'm a bit disappointed given I purchased a new bass and got a used/refurbished one. It has been a few months since my purchase due to my lack of knowledge in the workings of a bass beforehand, so I don't expect a refund but I feel a bit ripped off
