We feel that using the vacuum is very easy on your back compared to our experience with upright units. The hose in this model with the pivoting head makes it easy and less burdensome, since you don't have to worry about the hose getting twisted up on you. I bought this before moving to an apartment with all carpet. I chose this one because I have 2 cats and a baby and carpet is disgusting. I love: 1) the suction on this unit! It took almost 2 months of everyday vacuuming, but I can finally vacuum over 900 SQ ft of carpet and only empty the bin once. 2) after a month and a half of daily vacuuming I could walk around in bare feet for a day without my feet looking dirty (white socks still discolor after 2 days) 3) the tools that came with the vacuum cleaner compliment it well and you *need* them when using the hose because the strong suction makes moving smoothly over a surface neigh impossible 4) it's super easy to take the guard off the roller and unwind the hair that collects on it
