I want a shoe that has the cushion and drop of my Hoka Speedgoat with the toebox of my Altra Olympus 4.0.

Beware they do run very narrow at the toe and are not for everyone. If you needed the extra toe room you could look to the Hoka EVO Speedgoat,. EVO Mafate 2 or the Mafate Speed 3, all of which are high cushioned but have a stretchy bit of fabric over the toe, which can make the fit more accommodating.

I currently run in Nike Pegasus Trail Gore Tex. they are ok. But not great. 

Recently switched my road shoes to Hoka Rincon 2 for slower, longer runs and Saucony Endorphin Pro for speed runs.  I quite like the cushioning on the Rincons and am now looking for a trail shoe.

Shoes for long days of running &amp; hiking

I’ve done a couple ultras in loose snow, which felt a lot like running in sand to me. I’ve used both the SpeedCross and Hoka SpeedGoat. The ‘goats might have had the advantage due to the much wider sole helping with flotation, but I felt they got a lot heavier when wet. In all instances I studded the soles with about 8 sheet metal screws at the end of some select lugs, which I felt helped with a little extra grip even when ice wasn’t an issue

Wondering if anyone had any advice about shoes that may be better suited for sandy environments. I’m used to running in rocky, rooty, muddy Vermont environments and want to be better prepared for a trail that is relatively flat but very sandy. I currently sport the Salomon speed cross 5s and have used them in sand before but really don’t feel like the larger lugs give any advantage

Recommendations for trail shoes for sand

For years I wore boots (really heavy), then shoes (heavy) and now trail runners (not so heavy). I prefer the Hoka One Speedgoat trail runners. They are good for dry conditions, have great grip and stability (for me). I have never had ankle stability issues, so it works great

Does anyone backpack with trail running shoes? If boots, do you use actual “backpacking” boots or just something with ankle support?

, (4) have great cushioning for all-day wear on sharp surfaces, and (5) are not so heavy that I feel like I'm fighting the shoe when picking up the pace. I've run in Altra Timps and Lone Peaks, Brooks Caldera 4, La Sportiva Jackal, Salomon Sense Ride 3, and Topo MTN Racer 1s and none of these had all-day underfoot cushioning and protection against sharps like the Speedgoats. The durability of my Speedgoats have been good.

New trail running shoes

I run in the Speedgoat 3s and the Speedgoat 4 is a step back for me with regards to weight since it got heavier. The Speedgoat Evo on the other hand, is a huge improvement and superior to the Speedgoat 3 and 4.

For 3 season hiking I chose Hoka speedgoat 3, followed very closely by the brooks cascadia. They're both VERY comfortable shoes that are light and breath + dry very well. Lightness + Breathability + Drying quickly > a heavy gnarly boot that tries to keep you clean and dry but inevitably will get water logged from sweat anyway or the elements, just might take longer vs a trail runner. Also 1 pound on your foot is 5 pounds on your back

I'm  new to hiking but my girlfriend finally convinced me to go to a hiking  trip with her, somewhere around Schönau am Königssee and on the mountain area around it (nothing extreme tho). I've been looking for some proper shoes cause I'm  pretty sure I would regret it if I go with my ultra boost, and I've  found a few alternative:

1. Salomon  Quest Prime GTX: The only boots. Is it okay or overkill? I think it's  the most robust of them all and I can wear it when hiking during winter  or ski vacation. (114 euro)
2. Salomon  XA Pro 3D V8: trail runners, seems really comfy. However, no  waterproofness (can't use it in winter). I don't know if it offers  enough protection and grip? (96 euro)
3. Salomon  Trailster 2 GTX: quite similer to the XA, with GTX waterproofness.  However I've heard some controversy regarding GTX on trail runners (too  warm, sweaty feet). (72 euro)
4. Last  but not least: Merell Moab 2 (vents or GTX). Mother of all boots.  Almost bought the vents one immediately but read that it's really,  really prone to getting wet (even with just some wet grass). Not sure if  it's true and if I should just get the GTX version. Both around 80-90  euro.

What do you guys  think? Sadly I can't go to Globetrotter cause of the 'rona. I appreciate  any answer or if you have other suggestions, I would be very thankful!  Thanks and sorry for the long post. :)

I think salomon would be more versatile and less of an overkill but let&#39;s see. Kinda tempted of the idea of having  &quot;real&quot; boots in addition to my Timbs for winter :)</p>

 There are a couple of things that i dislike about the nova blast 2. Let'S get to those now starting with weight in my size, size 11. It is 11 ounces, which is you know a bit on the chunkier side. And ultimately, the problem for me is where it's balanced, so you're, just getting a lot of heal weight and a lot of that mass sort of pushed back towards the back of the shoe so with the unbalanced feel that makes the weight feel a little bit more Dramatic bringing us to our next dislike the heel, just the fact that the heel is so built back here

 It does provide you with plenty of life, a lot of fun and plenty of miles. That'S going to be comfortable underfoot for those long days, the shorter days, the faster days. I will definitely want to designate this more as a training shoe, definitely not race day shoe, but with the flight foam blast, the lock down the overall comfort of the shoe, i think the nova blast 2 makes for a fantastic all-around do-it-all daily trainer. I can't believe i just said that i really can, that being said, it's not all beautiful escarpment, climbs or cal street breakaways

 You could feel it no matter how many miles you put in the shoe. It was something that you could feel underfoot and it caused a bit of imbalance, the squish of the foam and the tightness and responsiveness of the foam, and also the reduction in that lump, as well as the additional width through the midfoot and the rest of the Midsole itself allows this shoe to be a lot more comfortable underfoot and it doesn't fight you or want to roll your foot in a certain direction. It just knocks the first version out of the water. So i'm happy to see these changes

 I think for a daily trainer, where you're probably going to get hundreds of miles out of the shoe. That'S a pretty good price point, and i've talked about shoes recently being at that 120-130 price point. That just seems to be the new starting point for daily trainers. They'Re gon na last you a while which kind of sucks i'd love that to be a hundred dollar price point, but the reality is we're just not seeing it anymore

ASICS NOVABLAST 2 REVIEW | The Ginger Runner

Swapped from Suacony Endorphine Speed 1 to these for last 1.5h of a 4h race. I bought these after a month of research, seeking a second 'main shoe' for training. They are very well made, nice looking materials, good ventilation, good grip

  Summed up- I'm disappointed in these based on what I expected from other reviewers. They are a solid, controlled shoe, a nicely built trainer, but I was expecting a softer sole and wider toe box. Size of fit is about 1/4 longer than a Saucony fit, a little more than that vs a Topo fit. Width is very standard

 I bought these after a month of research, seeking a second 'main shoe' for training. They are very well made, nice looking materials, good ventilation, good grip. Fit is not particularly roomy and ride isn't super soft, contrary to many expert reviews. They are mine now, so I'll continue to use them at least as a change up from the Speeds

 Details-  FIT- I wear 10.5 in Saucony, and sometimes those are too short or narrow. In general my length is in between a 10 and a 10.5

So with that disclosure out of the way, let's talk about the asics novoblast 2.: first, let's go over some specs. The novoblast 2 has 30 millimeters of ff blast, midsole foam in the heel, and this year it has an eight millimeter drop, a little bit different from last year's 10 millimeter drop

 It gets to be a little bit less breathable, but again, there's a little bit more structure and control in this midfield cage. So you can get some lockdown on the laces a lightly padded tongue and then a moderate amount of padding, almost kind of a heavy amount of padding for a daily trainer, but overall, a very comfortable amount of foam back here. And that foam is covering a very structured and a very rigid and substantial heel cup, something that's pretty common. Almost a signature feature of a lot of asic's shoes is that structure in that heel cup

I don't have an exact figure from asics for some reason, but from the other sources that i've been looking at

 But what it means is that there's 22 millimeters of stack height in the forefoot a little bit more than there was last year on the outsole we have ahar plus, which is an iteration of their traditional ahar rubber outsole formula. Up top, we have a double jacquard mesh, which is super soft, almost feels like a knit material up here and then moving towards the midfield cage. It gets to be a little bit less breathable, but again, there's a little bit more structure and control in this midfield cage. So you can get some lockdown on the laces a lightly padded tongue and then a moderate amount of padding, almost kind of a heavy amount of padding for a daily trainer, but overall, a very comfortable amount of foam back here

Novablast 2 - After 100 Miles

Key changes from the OG Novablast: different shaped upper, different midsole cutouts, lower drop (10mm to 8mm)

* The shape of the upper was vastly improved (at least for me), and lacing it up no longer required me to wrestle against my laces to get the lock-down I wanted.

* The upper was strangely roomy, and wasn't a fan of the jacquard mesh. Got these at my TTS 12 and had to crank the laces the whole way just to get some good lock down - I've noticed people had recommended sizing down but they would have been too short for me if I had

Post-Mortem: This isn't your parents' ASICS. The Novablast 1 retired after 665 km of Flytefoam Blast fun - and because I couldn't get enough, their replacement, the Novablast 2 out for a run in this early spring slush after a late snow. Quick review and initial thoughts in the comments.

US 9 on these pair were the most comfortable for me. They fit ok, secure, but not too snug. I got the standard D width, so I can't help those who have a wide foot. In comparisons with the Asics, the Asics feel tighter in the midfoot area
