This backpack by Osprey is very well made but keep in mind this is a laptop backpack. It’s not going to take a lot and I am quite disappointed with the size. It’s long but thin. Zipper doesn’t go all around because of the bottle pocket will not allow for this

Our tester stands a solid 511, and while the 21 liter makes for a great fit, the larger 26 liter model can be a bit long depending on the size of your torso

Not a full zip-around, but great for intraday use

 I imagine the carabiner on the right shoulder strap could come in handy to secure it to a chair or stroller when out in public and not wearing it on my back.

 I think this is due to the how little this protrudes away from your back, and the ridged foam back panel that gives it a nice flat surface that comfortably rests on your back. (pic of empty backpack staying flat when I’m holding it up horizontally) Photos are for size and volume. I do not have the best lighting, and the backpack looks much nicer in person. Also, in most photos, I left the water bottles in the outer pocket, which gives makes the backpack look uncharacteristically lumpy

  For the sake of this review and photos, I tried to fill the bag up to show what can fit. Even then, it was still very comfortable, definitely did not feel the weight like I would when using any other backpack I own. 4.5 stars, Great day bag / diaper bag

Great build quality, looks nice, minimal and slim despite the fact that it fits way more than it looks like it does. Great laptop and secondary laptop/iPad sleeve inside. Water resistant material, great ergonomics and spaces/pockets inside. Feels good on the back too

I’d pack the synthetic bag. Since you will be taking day hikes you won’t have to carry your heavy synth bag all day. And, as you indicate, you won’t have to worry as much about it getting wet.

Hi everyone, I have a gear quandary. I'm going bike backpacking in the PacNoWe for 3 nights next week. I have a light backpacking tent, not a bivy. I plan to line my sleeping bag stuff sack with a garbage bag during travel, and honestly, I will be at a base camp doing day hikes for most of it, so I will have the option of hanging my bag out to try if I need to, though that would inhibit my dayhiking/biking plans because I would be worried the bag would blow away/get stolen.

I am trying to make a decision about sleeping bag. I was originally going to take my beloved marmot down bag (0° F) and just be really careful. But a friend is trying to convince me to take my decades-old synthetic north face bag (also 0° F) instead because of the possibility of getting wet. 

I think this friend is underestimating my skill and carefulness, honestly. But I'd love to get some feedback from the community, as I don't backpack often anymore and usually in desert climates at that.

The forecast is rain the first night, cloudy the second day, and then sunny. Any thoughts?

Down bag for backpacking

 Its straps are recycled p-e-t, which is a common type of plastic used in plastic bottles, and it's got a bio-based polyurethane coating, which is also environmentally friendly. The material is durable and obviously water resistant, which is great for rainy days. It'S not the most flexible thing in the world, so don't expect something extremely pliable like cotton or leather, but i kind of like that it feels sturdy. The back itself is still comfortable and i do have sensitive skin

 You'Ve got a small pocket here, which i tend to use for my wallet and for things that i need quick access to and on the sides. You'Ve got some adjustable straps on both sides very useful for carrying my tripod. You have a pocket with some adjustable pockets in here and inside very colorful, thick padding and on the back. You have some velcro, so this velcro attaches to velcro inside the backpack inside

 So for me personally, if that was wider, maybe as wide as the bag, so that i could put a lot more things in there that i didn't need to go deep into the bag to get. I could just go into that pocket. That would be beneficial when i use the laptop case, which is not very often to be honest, i'm not usually carrying my laptop around when i'm using it. I tend to put it in back to front so the velcro doesn't stick to the velcro inside the bag

 As i find it's a real mission to get this out when this velcro is stuck to the velcro inside the bag, and it takes a lot of effort to get an eye, so i put it in back to front and then it quickly slides out. However, my partner has also got this same bag, and she loves this feature, and so she'll put it in the proper way put her laptop in and when she's going through security at the airport or needs to get quick access to her laptop. She simply pulls the laptop out rather than the whole bag, so i can see both ways. Yeah, it works fine, but i don't tend to put this in
