Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

**Twilight Imperium** - I don't like negotiation and I like my games to stay under 2 hours, preferably an hour or less. TI is beloved by many but I can't see myself ever enjoying it.

My friend absolutely refuses to try Spirit Island. I can't tell him enough how good it is but he for some reason takes it as a point of pride that he has never played it and never will, even though he loves Gloomhaven, Catan and other games that have a lot in common with SI. He doesn't even have a reason for not wanting to play it! Does this happen to anyone else?

 So now at last, we have all the pieces that assemble to make twilight imperium the legendary game it is. It is a war game where war is real, bad. It'S a war game where one player moving just one ship, just one system over will result in a conversation, so petty that the rest of the table of players will be smirking. So what can the proud people of the khan do for? You troubles me to say that this morning it became knowledge of my people that a hakan destroyer approached our territory invalidating the previous handshake agreement

 You have no idea. What'S going to come up, maybe you'll be meeting to designate the holy place, picking a planet in the galaxy that then becomes worth the victory point. Maybe you're uh voting on whether to suppress an anti-intellectual revolution which would make it harder for everyone to research, tech, which is pretty good if you've already got more tech than everyone else. Maybe you're voting to designate one faction around the table to have the minister of peace, which is going to make it harder for everyone else to attack them now

 No, you buy twilight imperium for a unique, hybrid, colorful experience that is so much more than the sum of its parts right. It'S a strategic game which is really good, involving decks and cards and tokens and ships and conquest, but one that is so difficult and complicated because you have to deal constantly with the humans at the table. So you're, looking up at your friends and you're, smiling and you're talking and you're smiling, because this game has so much more to it than other negotiation games. You might have played like the game of thrones board, game or diplomacy, because in those games everyone has to be an aggressive salesman, because only one player can win

 Yes, those planets that you use to build ships are instead spent in vote form, which makes this phase very complicated and it forces players to ask what really the value of that new rule is for them, which is very difficult, but maybe best of all. Within this galactic senate phase, it is the opportunity for players to balance this wild game. Importantly, not balance the game, but balance the game as they perceive it, which is even better if you think a player is being too aggressive, difficult, then hey. This is a great time to handicap them

Twilight Imperium: Fourth Edition - Shut Up & Sit Down Review

 Tactics are spent to activate systems allowing you to move to them and to build in them. If you already have a spaceport there, if you activate another player's system combat occurs. If you already have an activation token in a system, you cannot move units to there or from their fleet tokens restrict the number of ships you can have in any one. Hex strategy tokens allow you to use abilities on other people's strategy cards

 When someone does that, you can claim one public objective per turn for victory points. Secret objectives can also be claimed, and if you have the Imperial strategy card, you can claim an additional public objective or a victory point. If you control Mecca tal Rex competitive players, each represent one of many star, fearing empires role, selection, the strategy cards. You pick have a huge impact on how you play victory points

 Next turns first player the speaker gain action cards and set the political agenda. Other players can get action cards. Construction allows the building of point defense systems and space docks trade gives you trade goods which can be spent as either production or influence and helps you control. Whether other people can trade easily warfare allows you to pick up a command token, enabling you to move from an area that had already been activated

 Diplomacy protects one system from attack this turn but allows other players to refresh some planets politics. Lets you choose. Next turns first player the speaker gain action cards and set the political agenda. Other players can get action cards

Twilight Imperium 4 in about 3 minutes

 So much to think about there's so much to read it's. It is oh, my god there are so many pieces and then and then all of that stuff has reading material on it and there's a lot of flavor text too. I actually kind of like the flavor text and the planets are are kind of interesting um. There are so many combinations and the way that the game can change with different factions, but look at the end of the day

 First, i love that during game play you can do. I would say one of two, but maybe one of three things, so you can use a command token to do basically an action on the board. You activate a hexagon and you can do all of the things within that area of space. There are cards that you can play that have actions on them, so that would be the second thing and then the third thing you can do is you can play your strategy card and your strategy card gives the holder a unique ability and everybody else, a secondary Ability i love that mechanic

 However, they are not enough to raise the game against the burden that it carries. It carries the burden of having way too much to think about. Oh, my gosh, oh my gosh, i spent 11 hours 11 hours just reading things and processing. What'S going on, i like complexity

 How you play other players. Are you going to um violate an alliance that was established earlier in the game? Are you going to be friendly? Are you going to be aggressive? Are you going to invade somebody's home world and really really upset them? That is very strategic because, even though the conditions of the game can change immensely the relationships around the table, pretty much stay, the same come to think of it, i think of it as a game um and i'm trying to analyze the game play. It'S not the game is not about the gameplay. The game is about the social interaction and, if you think about that, an opportunity to have an interesting social interaction for 11 hours, that can be a lot of fun

Twilight Imperium: 4th Edition – Review

 Before, because the agenda phase was triggered by a strategy card, you didn't necessarily have a strategy phase every round. Here, once Mecatol Rex falls, you do- and you get two agendas to vote on! I really like the political aspect of this game- to me it's one of my favorite parts as players negotiate, bribe, and make non-binding promises. It works really well here. The various objective cards also offer some really new and fun challenges, and the action cards here are pretty cool as well

 At the beginning of a round each player takes a strategy card, beginning with the Speaker (someone who has selected a specific strategy card the previous round). All strategy cards have a primary ability, which the player can do once per round, and a secondary ability, which all other players can do when the card is activated. During a round, a player may play a strategy card or activate a system with a command token (an important currency of the game) from his player board in order to move, attack, build, etc.

 Players must resolve two political agendas, laws or directives, that all players can vote for by exhausting their world cards for the phase. Many of the Strategy cards are quite different in this game, including what their primary and secondary abilities can do. For instance, players can no longer buy space docks and PDS like units anymore. Rather, you need to use the Construction strategy card which allows you to build them on the board

 During a round, a player may play a strategy card or activate a system with a command token (an important currency of the game) from his player board in order to move, attack, build, etc... There are a number of political objectives that all players are trying to fulfill (many of them require taking the capital at Mecatol Rex), and there are also secret objective cards that only the player knows

 See this card just straight up, gives a point to whatever you give it to which can lead some really dumb king making, especially in the late game. This should have had a clause that you can't give to someone who has more points than you, which would add a lot more negotiation around this concept. Two people just trading supports for the thrones between each other. On the realm of politics, we found that the politics phase sometimes can be lackluster if there's two agendas that don't really do much to affect your board state

 This sheer amount of just variety and factions, like it's just mind-boggling, for a base game like no expansion. Just you just get all this straight up. Ti4 just has so much going on for each faction too, like at first glance, they got the flagship abilities, racial passives, racial technologies, but then they also have their own starting technologies, starting fleet and planets. To really get you pondering on how you'll choose to start this game off, so you got the more normal feeling ones like the federation of soul, which are basically they're just humans

 But what's this every strategy card has a part at the bottom talking about a secondary ability. What'S that about so this works like this. When a player uses their strategy card, everyone else can also choose to use that card's secondary action as long as they pay a small fee. This keeps players super engaged during gameplay because you have to constantly pay attention to other people's turns if they're using their action cards, so you can be like huh

 You actually got ta. Think about you, get it. If you decide to even get at all so ti4 is by no means just a long game. It can take at least four to five hours to complete with experienced players

 If people go into this expecting Catan-in-space, they're going to be severely disappointed, severely frustrated, or both. With the time commitment, the space required, and the familiarity of rules necessary to exploit the game world to its fullest, this is the best game you'll never play.

 -- but it's yet another thing that's "required" and not included in the game.  But, above all, this is an excellent heavy strategy game with a sizable commitment. With the time commitment, the space required, and the familiarity of rules necessary to exploit the game world to its fullest, this is the best game you'll never play

 Add in additional players, or the Prophecy of Kings expansion, and you're going to need some TV trays or additional side tables to hold components. Again, solutions for this abound across the Internet -- whiteboards for objective scoring, playing card holders to shrink the horizontal space, etc. -- but it's yet another thing that's "required" and not included in the game.  But, above all, this is an excellent heavy strategy game with a sizable commitment

All the same, I really don't think I'll ever play an 18XX game. I hesitate to say "I'll never" (given my track record) but they just don't appeal to me.
