Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

 I love it bc he is better at boardgames and sees engines, interactions and strategies I often miss. 

But Splendor? It's strategic enough, but too short for him to get his stuff optimized, so I end the game quickly winning every time we play 2 person.

I cannot best this woman at Ticket to Ride: Europe. I don't know if she's hiding a penchant for fighting 'round the world or what, but she's got some Russell Crowe beautiful mind shit going on when it comes to this game. 

I think I won the first time we ever played it, but I could just be gaslighting myself as she just runs away with the game every. damn. time.

What's worse, we listen to the Ticket to Ride playlist on Spotify whenever we play it, forever ruining The Beatles song of the same name. I get so damn triggered now by it.

Both those boxes were the same "Golden Geek" marked boxes,however, so that's not a guarantee of the quality of the components

  All that being said, after Space Cowboys (the original publisher) was purchased by Asmodee there have been some quality issues (or at least changes). The copy my parents ordered was SO MUCH LIGHTER than their copy that my father weighed it and compared it against theirs. He then insisted on opening it beforehand to make sure everything was actually in the box (it was). But the gemstone chips were only about 2/3 the weight of the other set

 Each turn, players take actions to gather gem tokens or spend gem tokens to buy gem cards. Each gem card has a cost in other gems on it. The cheapest gems normally require between three and five gems, while the most expensive gems requiring over 10 gems. On a players turn, a player can take one of four actions: gather three different gem chips, gather two gem chips of the same type if four gems of the same type are available, reserve a card by placing it face down in front of the player and taking a gold (wild card) token, and finally spending gem tokens to buy a gem card from reserve or from the available cards

 I didn't feel like a gemologist trading gems as I moved up the international mineral ladder to conquer my opponents. I feel like a guy sitting around a table trading poker chips as I build a card gathering engine. The saving grace for the theme of this game is the art and execution. The art is nice, adding a bit of environment to the game while the substantial poker chips do add a bit of tactile feeling to the game

 These decks all have different gems in them with one decking having cheap gems worth little to no points, another with middle value gems it in, and the final deck having the most expensive and highest point gems in it. Below the gem decks are placed poker chips with the five different kinds of gems on them. Each turn, players take actions to gather gem tokens or spend gem tokens to buy gem cards. Forgotten Favorites &amp; Hidden Gems - (August 19, 2021)

The experience is still shared. When we play multiplayer solitaire games like roll and writes, Orleans etc. we still *talk* and laugh and comment on each other's game and enjoy each other's company.  I can't tell if you're exaggerating to be funny or not but if you completely ignore what the other person is going for you will probably lose

I really dislike eurogames. I wanted to write hate, but the polite german in me didn't allow it. Yes, I see the irony in that.
Now why should you care? Everyone can have their opinion, it's alright to not like these types of games. Well you shouldn't care, but maybe deep down you feel the same, so let me tell you my point.
The point is specifically about non-confrontational eurogames where everyone has their own little board.
The point crystalized in the very last minutes of Quinns latest video ( https://youtu.be/TARsDxuENo4 ) where he plays a round of My City on his own. He plays the game on his own! 

In the video game community games used to be bashed a lot because of shoehorned multiplayer, that didn't really change anything. It's more fun with friends! Well, staring at paint dry is more fun with friends as well, that's hardly an argument.

If everyone has their little board, and playing their own little puzzle, and at the end just comparing on a little scoreboard, what's the point of playing together? Make it solitare, make a scoreboard, compere point online...
I like meaningful interracions. If I sit down with my friends I want to play WITH them, not in their presence. I tried Otis, I tried Dominion, I tried Agricola. We all just sat, counting our little cubes and cards, not really paying attention to other people, and at the end we all went "Oh, Martin won? I guess."

And I have a little first hand experience of fixing this issue with Splendor. My wife and I didn't really like it when we first got it, after a few games together. But then we played it with 3 and 4 people.  What fun, what adrenaline, everyone just fighting over the same card, you constantly looking at your opponents coins. Can he buy that Sapphire for 5 points? In 2 rounds probably, if I manage to draw 2 Rubies I'll be ok! When we played the 2 player variant we both kinda did whatever. So we decided to reduce how many cards are in play. Instantly 10x better game. The same exhilarating feeling of fighting over cards and coins!

I'm also extremely bothered that these games are being shown as the best what board games have to offer! Is it really? Is sitting at a table, each to their own with their own little game the pinnacle of board games? Aren't they supposed to be about comming together, having an analog fun time, chatting, discussing, bantering? If everyone is playing their own board, why we don't all just solve sudokus and compare, or just read a book. And I don't mean that board games should be about conflict and confrontation, I know many people don't like that. But they should be about interaction! Devs! Make more cooperative games god damn it!

Tl,dr: Boardgames with separate boards are bad, go solve sudokus together.

I really dislike eurogames. A tiny rant. A bit of discussion.

 City of the Big Shoulders. Earlier on, Splendor. I’m kinda Splendored-out now, but the first time I played it I left the meetup and drive straight to my FLGS to buy.

For me it's:

1. **Clicked immediately - Auztralia:** I loved this game from the first play. The rules are lean, the turns are simple but very deceptively deep. The mix of themes (infrastructure building &amp; war against Lovecraftian Old Ones) is so unique as well. The semi-random map setup mechanic makes the game very replayable, and gives you interesting choices even during setup when you're deciding where to put your port.
2. **Clicked after a while - Jaws of the Lion:** I had to drag this one out a few times in order to "get it". For the first few times I felt like the mechanics were just too heavy and fiddly for not much payoff - just get a couple of coins or XP, no real story...that's it? But in my last game something happened and suddenly I can't stop thinking about it. The way the different enemies behave, the way the cards synergise with each other and between players, the legacy elements...it's suddenly rewarding.
3. **Never clicked - Eldritch Horror:** I've tried so many times to enjoy this game but I think I just...don't. I thought buying all the expansions would help enrich the experience and they did a little bit, but there are some underlying factors that just make the game not fun for me. I hate how you can get to a clue encounter and even if you succeed you don't get the clue so you might just camp there for 3-4 turns. I really dislike how swingy and unfair it feels - get the wrong tentacle card at the wrong time and that's two hours of game down the drain. And finally, winning is so anticlimactic it's not rewarding at all: "OK then I do this...and...I guess we won? OK let's pack up I guess".

What's a game that clicked with you immediately, one that clicked after a while, and one that never clicked?

.. last ups and the final score is tallied.  There are certain nobles laid out that look for certain card combinations

 I needed another turn after this one to get the last ruby I needed for my collection I knew a noble wanted to see. Her patronage would give me the points I needed to win. But if I didn't block my opponent, he'd win. How close are the others? The next guy is probably in the same boat I'm in

Loads of tense fun despite weak theme

 Needless to say, every single corner of the box was damaged, the plastic broken through and the box messed up. Hard to say its bad enough to go through the trouble of returning it and trying to get a new copy, but how stupid is that to send something like that with just a shipping label stuck on the front. You are asking to have the box damaged.

Shipping Issues

 Viticulture for a longer experience (for some reason it's a pretty slow game for me and my wife, usually up to 2 hours plus). TtR Europe is a close second behind Rajas because Azul and Splendor are so much better gateway games for us. Targi also fell flat for us but I want to play once or twice more before deciding to cull.

* **Game for which my opinion changed the most from positive to negative:** Machi Koro. Loved the art and the concept at first, but after buying the expansion with tuna boats - realizing this game was really repetitive, too luck-driven, and certain strategies broke the game. I started out LOVING this game and quickly hating it after the first expansion.

I'm really into the brain burner-y puzzles and she's a bit more theme driven (our top 5 crossovers are probably GAH and Tzolk'in) - Brass: Birmingham also looked like a contender with Troyes but curious to hear what you all think. Thanks for reading.

* **Current favorite:** Tzolk'in. Feels like such a tight puzzle that I haven't completely worked out yet, so I want to keep playing.

* **Least liked expansion:** Maybe there's a theme here - my wife and I really hated 7 Wonders Duel's Pantheon expansion and we almost got rid of the game because of it even though it used to be our #1 or #2 favorite. Maybe I shouldn't buy any more expansions based on this and Machi Koro :)

 Sadly, that does not describe my family. Over time, Splendor's depth of strategy turned out to be its Achilles' heel. My family grew tired of losing to me, and preferred other games with a better chance of them winning. Make no mistake, this game is not nearly as "random" or "casual" as it appears, and if you do master the strategies, you'll consistently dominate those who haven't

 Just don't overpower the same "casual" people for too long, or it'll fall out of favor. Ticket to Ride and Dice Forge have both had more staying power for us in the 30-60 minute "casual" game category. However, despite the layer of dust currently sitting on my copy, it was totally worth the experience in the meantime.

Wish I would've "let the Wookie win" occasionally to keep it in rotation.
