Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

In Pax Pamir, players assume the role of nineteenth century Afghan leaders attempting to forge a new state after the collapse of the Durrani Empire. Western histories often call this period "The Great Game" because of the role played by the Europeans who attempted to use central Asia as a theater for their own rivalries. In this game, those empires are viewed strictly from the perspective of the Afghans who sought to manipulate the interloping ferengi (foreigners) for their own purposes. In terms of game play, Pax Pamir is a pretty straightforward tableau builder. Players spend most of their turns purchasing cards from a central market, then playing those cards in front of them in a single row called a court. Playing cards adds units to the game's map and grants access to additional actions that can be taken to disrupt other players and influence the course of the game. That last point is worth emphasizing. Though everyone is building their own row of cards, the game offers many ways for players to interfere with each other directly and indirectly. To survive, players will organize into coalitions. Throughout the game, the dominance of the different coalitions will be evaluated by the players when a special card, called a "Dominance Check", is resolved. If a single coalition has a commanding lead during one of these checks, those players loyal to that coalition will receive victory points based on their influence in their coalition. However, if Afghanistan remains fragmented during one of these checks, players instead will receive victory points based on their personal power base. After each Dominance Check, victory is checked and the game will be partially reset, offering players a fresh attempt to realize their ambitions. The game ends when a single player is able to achieve a lead of four or more victory points or after the fourth and final Dominance Check is resolved.

There's a rule in Pax Pamir that encapsulates its genius. "Players are free to discuss the game during play and explicitly coordinate their actions. However, any agreed-upon deal should be considered non-binding." In other words, double-crossing is allowed!  Pax Pamir puts you in the mind of an Afghan tribal leader, with only situational allegiance to your own government, or to the imperialist British or Russians

 3 coalitions(British, Russian, Afghan) are fighting over the country after the fall of the Durrani Dynasty. You are one of several tribesmen who are working to keep themselves on top after the dust clears. Work for or against one of the 3 coalitions, as well as against the other tribesmen.  It looks great, the cloth map and pieces are stunning

 But everything you do is to the benefit or detriment of your opponents.  Set in the era of the "Great Game" between Russian and Britain in post Napoleonic Afghanistan. 3 coalitions(British, Russian, Afghan) are fighting over the country after the fall of the Durrani Dynasty. You are one of several tribesmen who are working to keep themselves on top after the dust clears

Tight game of multiplayer conflict

My description is pretty dry, but the game itself was very thematic. Lots of Putin jokes, references to Russian famine for us poor players, making fun of my poor "Kabul" pronunciation but also giving me a pass 'cause it hasn't been in American news in 20 years. Also, a unique choice for American independence day.

Oh my god that teach tho. I figured practice rounds were the way to go, first round explain the market and buy actions, second round explain playing cards, third round explain card actions. Easy no, and more engaging than just talking? Turns out, was very much not easy. Two of the players really wanted to understand every eventuality of their choices

I just snagged a copy of **Royal Visit** before they all disappear off the face of the planet thanks to SUSD. Some other aesthetic gems in my current collection:  

**Unmatched** - specifically the card art, not so much the minis.  
**Codex Naturalis** - absolutely love the art style, and amazing use of foil.  
**Tokaido Collectors Edition** relaxing pastels, and those metal coins!  
**Roam** - Ryan Laukat art is always great, but the square wooden pieces with rounded corners, and the color scheme for the player colors, are also surprisingly satisfying.

Age of Civilization has an interesting civilization drafting mechanic that varies with every setup, along with a half-dozen solo variants, tons of replay value & depth. Getting the right combo together can carry a player quite far.

Age of Civilization, Pax Pamir 2e, Champions of Hara, and Spirit Island leap to mind from my collection.

Champions of Hara is about card-driven events, hand management, and cards that behave differently whether they're in hand on on the table, but depending on the situation, the synergies are completely different. But in any given game, someone's going to put together that "perfect turn" and have their hand of cards combo beautifully. And each character is almost entirely unique, so there's that asymmetry to boot.

This is a flip to a post made by u/secondtriggerevent. What are some games that seemed okay to you at first, but seemed to bet better and more enjoyable the more you played them? One for me is Lord's of Waterdeep. I didn't instantly enjoy it, but now it's a favorite that I never get bored of.

Robinson Crusoe - The first time we played it completely correct after about 10 plays and barely squeaked out a victory in the castaways scenario. We were excelling until the 6 round when the weather took its toll on us but if good items in hand and a lucky treasure card draw we survived!

Clans of Caledonia - me and my roommate played this officially for the first time and really enjoyed it. He was able to take multiple export contracts so he quickly outpaced me in that department but once my distillery business gained steam I was able to pull away with a narrow victory

Element - Fun abstract strategy game that I always enjoy playing. Won once in a fairly short affair and lost once in a long drawn out game.

What Did You Play This Week? - (May 17, 2021)

 It has a lot in common with Inis regarding the shifting alliances, but it also has some signature Wehrle design ideas. It plays well at 2 with the Wakhan module that's in the box. And it scales very well up to 5p.

 But it's also strategic and political. And if you look closely, you'll see some similarities between it and Oath. You could even conceivably have the winner of one session become Brenn at the beginning of the next and choose a capital among the territories where they were cheiftain. If you're dead set on a Cole Wehrle game, then get Pax Pamir 2e

Looking to pick one of these up today after work. Not sure which one to go for. 

My wife and I play board games once or twice a week and we have been eyeing these two. I play with my board game group once a month and it seems both of these would be good to bring out with a group. 

I like that choices in Oath can influence future games.

Hmm, this is tough. I’m going to be broad with categories to see what I’d do if I cut almost everything. 

Heavier game : **Pax Pamir 2e**. I love the game and the decisions it offers. Viticulture + Tuscany and Brass Birmingham get cut (BB getting cut isn’t super fair since it suffers from not many plays which makes it hard to decide if I’d keep it or not).
