Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

 We really did enjoy our time with it once we got into it. Yeah um, and so i hope that and - and i think it's like it depends on the person like if you love yeah, if you love that tug of war, if you love that king making sort of thing or queen making or queen blocking um, then this is Definitely definitely for you, if you love those kind of tactical war sort of stuff and go for it now you have no doubt that they're probably going to be. You know additional expansions and additional all sorts of different things to make this. This point maybe we'll revisit it, but yeah yeah

 Yes, and so you were very good at every time. It'S like chronicling like what happened in that game and i'm very like so that was really nice. That was really fun yeah. So after we filmed like, we played all the multiplayer games and we kind of understood now how things worked, and i was like okay

 Let me see i've got very handy right here. All the different uh forms that this sort of takes place so with the clockwork prince, you have this um. You know, in theory, very handy a4 sheet, which you, why would that be like size, 6 font double-sided, not a single image inside to explain or give you some context as to this is what this means, or this is where this goes. And then you have the mind of the clockwork prince, which is this flowchart that i believe is based on um again, war games sort of thing

 If they rolled a three through six, they would win okay, so it could end even earlier than that if an exile is able to win as well all right. So what you're going to be doing on your turn is essentially spending supply, which is kind of an action point system to take different actions. All right and the actions are listed on everybody's player board and the actions are the same, no matter what the player you are, you might search and by searching you're drawing three cards from this deck or from the discard of the area that you're in and you're Going to play one either to your site or to your advisors. Your advisors is basically kind of like your hand of cards, and you can have up to three start the game with one you can always for a free action play it face up, turn it around, and now you can utilize whatever the particular power of that card

 You'Re gon na need money, so you you can learn it and i did and it was fine. You know just sort of being taught the game without going through that system, but you don't, then see you know three or four sort of ideas that are the general what they are suggesting. Well, you know here's what you could do you could do it this way. You could do this, you could do that

 They'Ve got this alternate win condition which is in purple at the bottom of all of these kind of oaths that you might potentially be playing in that game, and so it gives them uh, potentially a chance to strengthen their position because they're kind of sharing warbands with The chancellor, but it also does give them a different way to win whenever it might trigger a win for the oath for the chancellor. If the citizens have fulfilled that secondary condition, they would win instead of the chancellor. So a lot of things going on a lot of potential win conditions, oftentimes happening at the exact same time. There are a lot of things that i did not cover here and that was by design

 Yeah, you know those games that are kind of really hard to get into and they're punishing, and you took you three games to like it. Remember that game. If you do and you did like it, you might like both yeah yeah. That'S a really good way

 That can be blank. One two or multipliers become exponentially more scary. The more that are rolled and attacked ice can be impotent just right or so chunky that they have. You offing your own troops, so those are the actions of oath and on paper, they sound kind of unremarkable sure there are clever little twists and they're all done under these weird victory conditions, but what makes them sing? What makes them special the way that i've explained? Those actions in that order sounds like a pretty typical war game, but those actions are not that and oath is not one of those games

 Sat around the table, so alliances get strung from game to game so far so neat, but the real star here are the tweaks to the deck because of what they mean within the future of your copy of oath. At the end of the game, the winner chooses the suit of one of their advisors and filters in new cards of that suit into the game. They'Ll also put in a couple of other stragglers and then gather up all the cards from the losing players and slide. Six of them into the dispossessed: well, they might as well, have been put in a history bin

 You are the agent of the actual change, not sending faceless people to do the battle in a far-off land. You stake your claim personally, the metagame and the game are won, but, unlike the king's dilemma, none of this narrative is offered. It all emerges from the board and through people through the players through their relationships between games and their knowledge of the history that came before them. This is where oath shines in ways that are broader and more glittering than even the remit of this review
