Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back.  Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

Hey all, I've only been in the hobby for about 3 months now and have since been collecting like a mad man. I love how many different types of games are out there. 

**What Would I Change:** Simple, more games! I have an ever-increasing wish list the more that I research and watch reviews and gameplay videos. If I had to simplify it, I would say that I want to get some of the higher-ranked and heavier games on BGG (Spirit Island, Scythe, etc.)

**Favorite Game:** I haven't had a chance to play all of them quite yet but I absolutely loved **878 Vikings**. That was the first game that I really had my eye on and it was better than advertised. I also really like the **Unmatched** series but I haven't had enough opportunity to play them. Only Robin Hood vs. Big Foot so far. 

**Newest Games:** **878 Vikings, Takenoko,** and **Trekking The National Parks**. It was the wife's birthday so we got her a couple of new games.

  PS: I've read in some forums that upon assaulting a City, you need to attack the all the enemies in one go. This rule has to be changed if true. From now on, it is more appropriate to pick and choose which enemies you want to attack. You can either attack one individually and retreat, or group them together

 Therefore, the new rule for this game is that you have a choice as to which enemy/enemies to attack when assaulting a city. Now I think we may have a good game on our hands.

Why is this more practical and makes more thematic sense? It's a city! These enemies are all not going to be found cuddled up in one spot. And since there could be like 7 or so enemies combined with two cities, attacking each individually would likely use up a lot of time and turns, so time would be against you if you took that tactic, on top of the fact that with each city assault you get -1 Reputation

Impossible To Win & Gives Headaches

Mage Knight has a unique card puzzle, satisfying advancement, rewards smart play, and discourages quarterbacking (through giving players plenty to think about with their own character, and having some measure of competitive elements). I'd be interested to try Dungeon Lords, Space Alert and Galaxy Trucker sometime, though I'd struggle to get the required 4 who want to play Space Alert, and the OOP status of the big box versions of the others turns me off (big box fiend that I am).

You could very easily replace the inserts with some deck boxes and small containers or baggies for all different types of game pieces. That would actually speed up your game set up as well. Best Solo Experience Ever!

  Pros: -Each game is unique. You can play with multiple strategies (offensive/attack-mode, exploring, etc). Single-player option is still challenging and strategic. The game board & pieces themselves are incredibly detailed and the concept of the game is very unique

  Cons (minor): -The rule book & game walkthrough booklets were misassembled. This caused a lot of confusion initially. -You need a LARGE table for this. A simple card table will not be big enough as you build your board throughout the game

 This isn't a classic one-board game. There's a board for player progress, several card decks that expand, a player area (for each player), and then the gameplay board which expands as you play. For 1-2 players, I think 2 card tables or a large dining table is adequate. You could potentially do 1 card table and a side/coffee table as well

Very complex, but worth the investment

 This is not a game for first time gamers and learning it alone will take probably 3 plays. They won't be short plays either! But if you can suck it up and keep pushing ahead this game is a jewel that will keep you coming back for more. Can't wait for the lost Legion expansion which I hear will make the solitaire variant of this game much more thematic and less of a points race. Love it!

 Every Mage Knight is himself a conquistador trying to take as much of the land as possible before his opponents can get to it. This leads to the action of using your current hand of cards to attempt to optimize your turn to its maximum level. This game is a kind of like a cross between magic The Gathering, Heroclix and a spreadsheet. It is very difficult to learn but once you understand it, it gives a pay out like no other game I've played recently. Every Mage Knight is himself a conquistador trying to take as much of the land as possible before his opponents can get to it. This leads to the action of using your current hand of cards to attempt to optimize your turn to its maximum level

Great Game  (If you have the werewithal to learn it)

 My Wife enjoys this game for the co-op aspect although you can play competitively. The different amount of scenarios you can play, as well as your own house scenarios keeps this game coming back to the table as our all time favorite (even over Arkham Horror). One of my favorite games. Takes a looooong time to play though

Im not the best with reviews, but I will say Im really enjoying the game so far. All components are made very well and, thematically, it is wonderful.  In terms of learning curve, I'm relatively new to the boardgame world but, after watching "how to" play games on youtube I was playing within a few hours. Once you have the basics down its just refining your understanding of a few mechanics and quirky situations you might come across

Not as hard as reported

 I asked Amazon if I could just chuck it, but they're insisting on a physical return, further dampening my vacation. If they're taking it back in this condition, I'd be wary of buying it if I were you.

 I absolutely recommend it. But don't buy it from Amazon. Clearly a return, and was used for a long time, including people's written notes and some.
