Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

 The game with these four landmarks, with a gray side, face up in front of you and return in the extras to the game box. The rest of the cards are establishments, there are starting regular and major ones. The starting establishments are easy to identify because they have a different colored back compared to the rest of the cards. So to begin players will take a wheat field and bakery from the starting establishments returning any leftovers to the box

 First, then, all green and blue and finally any purple ones. Instead of constructing an establishment, a player may instead complete a landmark by paying its cost and then flipping it over. These can be completed in any order and once flipped over, they provide you with a special power. These powers are not active when the landmark is gray side up, but they're still written there just to remind you of what they can do

 In order, so you could save up and complete the radio tower first, if you really wanted to and that's how you play machi Koro now, here's something to consider you may want to get a variety of different kinds of establishments and that way, no matter what is Rolled you're more likely to get some coins from the bank. On the other hand, you may try to stack up on some of the specific establishments and that way, if you get those certain number, while your payout could be quite large and there's also some other establishments that combo with other ones. For example, the fruit and vegetable stand will give you more coins based on the number of wheat fields that you have. Played through to the end of a long session of **Nemesis: Lockdown** with 5 people. Great game! Just wish that dying so early didn't write people out of the rest of the game, considering how long it is. Maybe a capture mechanic instead of straight up death  early on would help and other characters could try to free the captured persons.

What Did You Play This Week? - (November 01, 2021)

 I kind of don’t even want to pull it out anymore because it’s hard not to want to play the same strategy over again. If there were randomized skills or landmarks or something to make it interesting it might be make it better.

Replayabilty questionable

 They usually affect other players like here, take three coins from each opponent. If i roll a seven the order matters, a bit much red cards always go off. First, then blue, then green, then purple then any special buildings that you might have now. Why are players collecting coins, you're passing us around collecting coins and coins? At the end of your turn, you can buy something so again you can buy one of the establishments or, more importantly, you can buy a landmark when you buy a landmark

 Also, the third one wins you the game. When you build a landmark, sometimes they will bring a new rule into play. This says: if you don't build anything on your turn, you get five coins from the bank and that's all players. It happens

 Oh you so, and so, oh you know what the game's over let's play it again and it really isn't a very long game. The the the changes from this to the first one so for machu girl one. There was just a bunch of cards out there, like the original deck builder dominion, a bunch of cards that you would buy and put in front of you now the expansions change it to a sliding line, which i don't know if that made the game better. But here the sliding line works because they have a one through six and a seven through 12

What Did You Play This Week? - (October 04, 2021)

 So, even if everyone got two you're never going to get through the landmark deck so shuffling that you're going to have different options, every game, you may not have the loan option next time, yeah all right, we've never gotten the launch pad like no. It'S never come up. The loan office has come up in a couple games and the launch pad has never come out, so i think it really. It does a good job of adding variety too, because that was one of the the critiques of machi core that i've heard

 These decks are pretty big and again the landmarks. It'S a it's because there's so many and if you played, i think it'll play up to five players. So, even if everyone got two you're never going to get through the landmark deck so shuffling that you're going to have different options, every game, you may not have the loan option next time, yeah all right, we've never gotten the launch pad like no. It'S never come up

 All of these. It'S a mixture of again things that affect all players, so reduce the build cost of the launch pad by five coins for all players. So if someone builds the observatory, they get the credit for building a landmark, but they make the win cheaper for everybody. So that again, that is probably strategically the single biggest change to the game and again, instead of having even with the millionaires row and the the the harbor expansion, you still watch yeah everyone

 You have stacks of cards that activate on numbers, one through six on seven through 12 and then the landmarks and you will notice it's a big old deck of landmarks and they are all different. They are all different. So you take these three stacks. You put out five cards until there are five unique cards

My little one (2) is learning how to count and it helps that none of the cards cost more than 3. She’s also learning how to count the pips on a die. I help her with everything else and my son always tries to goad her into just buying landmarks.

My older kid (5) is learning strategy (get a bunch of one type of card, blue cards are better, etc) and is figuring out making change and stuff. Paying 5 and getting one back while buying a card. He’s also learning a lot which color does what thing and if there’s reading, i help him with that, but I suppose he’s going to be better once hear learns how to read sentences better. 

The other day, I was visiting my mom, who has younger kids at home. They were getting ready to play Monopoly, and I commented on how long it takes to play.  They said "It never really takes us that long," and my mom gave me a "leave it" face. 

Turns out, my mom has just straight up lied to them about how the game is played lmao.  I learned that day that every game I had played with her as a kid had "parent rules" to make them more bearable (which as an adult I totally understand). 

If you're a parent, do you utilize this brand of house rules? If so, what are some of your favorites?

Exactly this kind of thing. Board games were never my mom&#39;s thing, so as other posters have said she just Calvinballed a lot of the time. We were having fun so we never really noticed. I have 3 older brothers, one of which is close to me in age, so I think a lot of her rules fudging was to keep us from spiraling into chaos.

I&#39;d have to ask her for specifics, but I remember not having to wait for specific cards to get a piece out in Sorry and Yahtzee! basically just being &quot;shake up the dice and see what you get&quot;, the scoretracking notepads were never used haha.
