Long Story short: This game is absolutely wonderful! This (according to many board game review sites) is set to be the top game of 2017, and I 100% recommend getting yourself a copy, though it will likely be difficult/take some time. Its definitely a HOT selling item and I was lucky enough to pre-order mine a month ago before other folks started seeing it listed on Amazon. This is definitely worth getting and will make a huge hit to your gaming nights! A more detailed breakdown is below. (Note relating to pictures: The game does NOT come with painted miniatures

This game is absolutely wonderful!

 You can then upgrade to the full GH experience later and can bring the classes across so its literally win win. One massive downside to GH is the organisation, the 3rd party inserts are a godsend but can cost almost as much as the base game.

Some friends and I split $25/each and bought my sister Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift - on my suggestion. I bought it from our local shop today and the size &amp; weight immediately had me worried... because **a primary reason we were buying her a new boardgame is that she has a hard time getting people to play Dead of Winter with her (a game she** ***really*** **likes).**

I have no clue where I got this idea, but I thought Gloomhaven would be something she could more easily get people to play. Anyway, I have since learned the error of my ways.

I felt pretty confident that she would at least really like the game and could find a regular player in me (we live together) and at least one other friend. So I've been thinking about doing all the setup/organization for her beforehand... but if I do this, there is no turning back. I can't return the game. And I'm starting to doubt how much she'll like it... I may also be panicking...

I did buy another game for her that's half the price, with much easier setup and simpler rules, just so she has *options...*

**TL;DR - I split Gloomhaven as a Christmas gift. Should I open it up and start the setup/organization process, voiding my ability to return it? Or should I just return it? Did I buy my sister a burden?**

Some additional gaming background on my sister:

* She enjoys DnD a lot. We played regularly for 4 years until I had to quit DMing after going back to school
* She really likes Dead of Winter for it's Co-Op gameplay, Narrative Choice mechanics, Variable Player Powers, and tense *moments*
* Dead of Winter is the only medium weight board game she owns
* The next heaviest is Betrayal at House on the Hill
* Root is a medium weight game she has also really enjoyed
* She seems to really like boardgames and seems to want to delve deeper into the hobby, but hasn't yet
* BANG!, Coup, Pit, Catan, Ticket to Ride, Secret Hitler, and Fake Artist Goes to New York are all games she's liked and enjoyed, but they're all light weight and don't scratch the same itch
* We've gifted her expansions for DoW and Betrayal in the past. We want to buy her a new, medium weight game

Bought Gloomhaven as a gift - Return it or start organizing?

Easy to follow rules on how to play and my jr. high high and high school kids can not stop playing it with me.

Amazing game you must get!

 Using the analog system included in the box is manageable in the early days, but as the game develops this becomes a literal accounting nightmare.  This is not the kind of game you can just pull off the shelf and have a good go at it with uninitiated friends. Expect a newcomer to need a good six hours of exposure at least to come to grips with the genius of this game and begin to truly enjoy themselves.  In short, a gamer (or group) needs to approach Gloomhaven as a hobby with all the commitment a hobby entails to get the most out of this experience

 You then use the top action on one card, and the bottom action on the other. These are then placed in a discard pile and the cycle continues. Once you are unable to play a pair of cards on your turn, you’ll have to rest to get them back. However, upon resting you’ll be forced to [b]burn[/b] a card, which makes it unavailable for the rest of the scenario

 It takes some time to become accustomed to your new recruit before you realise their full potential. So, what do you say to a bit of good old-fashioned dungeon delving?

 Like any game, the introduction of the concepts precedes the details of the rules. But, in this case, the rules of game play leave out important details and require cross referencing with other parts of the rule book in 1 to 2 other spots to fully grasp what is going on. Fortunately, an online search engine allows quick answers to vague gameplay concepts.  Second, as mentioned above, some of the concepts need more explanation than the rules provide

In Key Flower, each player starts with a "home" tile and an initial random team of workers. Matching colored workers are used to bid for tiles to add to a player's village, to upgrade tiles or to generate resources, skills or additional workers. Players not only use their own tiles, but can also use tiles from the other player's villages, or even the new tiles being auctioned.

During the first three rounds; spring, summer and autumn, more workers will arrive aboard the Key Flower and her sister boat, some skilled in the working of key resources. Monthly Board Game Bazaar - (May, 2021)

 I bounced off this so hard. Story telling games just aren't for me, I play games for the mechanics

* Brass: Lancashire (BGG 19) - I've played only the one game many years ago and I actually don't remember much about it. Though I do know I've always wanted to play it again. I placed it at 10th but I'm pretty sure it's going to be higher if I got to play it again.

*First things first, I got this idea from The Brothers Murph who released a video on their Youtube channel this week listing their top 10 games according to BGG rankings, then later posted on their Patreon how they would rank the games in that list. So all credit goes to The Brothers Murph for this fun idea. I hope they won't mind me sharing it here. If you enjoy this I totally recommend you check out their Youtube and Patreon, they do a lot of fun stuff and even their Patreon content is free for everyone.*

16 - **7 Wonders Duel**

20 - **Wingspan**

24 - **Viticulture Essential Edition**

40 - **The Crew**

53 - **Azul**

65 - **The Quacks of Quedlinburg**

80 - **Architects of the West Kingdom**

92 - **Patchwork**

114 - **Cartographers**

119 - **Res Arcana**

But my order for those would be:

1 - **Patchwork** - my favourite game of all time so it's an easy #1! I think **Patchwork** is unimprovable, it is a wonderful perfect information abstract game with a high skill ceiling. It creates the most exciting moments and difficult decisions. An absolute gem of a game.

2 - **Azul** - I'm a huge fan of open drafting mechanisms that lead to hate drafting as well as tile placement so I guess it's no surprise that both **Patchwork** and **Azul** top my list. This game has great table presence too which never hurts.

3 - **The Quacks of Quedlinburg** - it's just such silly fun! The bag building is well implemented but really what keeps me coming back to Quacks is that push your luck element.

4 - **Architects of the West Kingdom** - it was hard to rank this one because I've only managed to play it once so far. But that one game was up there amongst the most fun I've ever had playing a board game for the first time. It's a really clever worker placement game, perhaps my favourite one, though **Targi** gives it some competition. I think **Architects of the West Kingdom** could climb as high as #2 on this list but I'm not comfortable putting it up there just yet.

5 - **Cartographers** - always a casual good time. This game was my first non **Yahtzee** exposure to the roll/flip and write genre. It's great. I play it quite often and it has held up well to many plays.

6 - **Res Arcana** - I'm hoping this game will climb up higher after a few more plays. I've played it a handful of times and for whatever reason it still hasn't clicked for me. But I love the concept and the art, and I fully expect to have a blast playing this once I've wrapped my head around it a bit more. 

7 - **Viticulture** - I think this game is wonderful but suffers in comparison to **Architects of the West Kingdom**, I played them both on the same day. I'm excited to play **Viticulture** again but it didn't wow me to the same extent as **Architects of the West Kingdom**. 

8 - **Wingspan** - I'll give **Wingspan** credit because of all the overt engine building games I've played, it's the one where I most quickly understood the engine. It's a gorgeous game with fun game play but not a favourite of mine.

9 - **7 Wonders Duel** - I feel kind of sad having **7 Wonders Duel** so low on my list. I love fun open drafting mechanics. Bruno Cathala is my favourite designer. But I don't know, this one doesn't do it for me. Maybe I'll enjoy it more as time goes on. I'm still excited and motivated to play it again. For me confusing iconography can really impede my enjoyment of a game. When I compare the iconography of this game to other games on this list that are heavy in iconography, I find this one has the worst use of iconography. I'm constantly having to refer back to the rule book when I play this game which gets in the way of immersing myself in the experience. 

10 - **The Crew** - I've played through a bunch of the earlier missions at two players. I don't know if trick taking games are just not my thing, if this game really suffers at two players or if it will improve as the missions become increasingly more complicated. But so far we've accomplished every mission on the first attempt and I find it pretty dull.

Final thoughts: it's interesting to me how my rankings are almost in reverse order to the BGG rankings. I tend to prefer lighter games and love abstracts. I find BGG skews heavy and doesn't tend to favour abstracts (**Azul** is the top abstract game on BGG and only clocks in at 53 in the overall rankings!), so it's not too surprising that games like **Patchwork**, **Azul** and **Cartographers** are ranked a bit lower on BGG.

But my order for those would be:

1 - Patchwork - my favourite game of all time so it&#39;s an easy #1! I think Patchwork is unimprovable, it is a wonderful perfect information abstract game with a high skill ceiling. It creates the most exciting moments and difficult decisions. An absolute gem of a game.

2 - Azul - I&#39;m a huge fan of open drafting mechanisms that lead to hate drafting as well as tile placement so I guess it&#39;s no surprise that both Patchwork and Azul top my list. This game has great table presence too which never hurts.

3 - The Quacks of Quedlinburg - it&#39;s just such silly fun! The bag building is well implemented but really what keeps me coming back to Quacks is that push your luck element.

4 - Architects of the West Kingdom - it was hard to rank this one because I&#39;ve only managed to play it once so far. But that one game was up there amongst the most fun I&#39;ve ever had playing a board game for the first time. It&#39;s a really clever worker placement game, perhaps my favourite one, though Targi gives it some competition. I think Architects of the West Kingdom could climb as high as #2 on this list but I&#39;m not comfortable putting it up there just yet.

5 - Cartographers - always a casual good time. This game was my first non Yahtzee exposure to the roll/flip and write genre. It&#39;s great. I play it quite often and it has held up well to many plays.

6 - Res Arcana - I&#39;m hoping this game will climb up higher after a few more plays. I&#39;ve played it a handful of times and for whatever reason it still hasn&#39;t clicked for me. But I love the concept and the art, and I fully expect to have a blast playing this once I&#39;ve wrapped my head around it a bit more. 

7 - Viticulture - I think this game is wonderful but suffers in comparison to Architects of the West Kingdom, I played them both on the same day. I&#39;m excited to play Viticulture again but it didn&#39;t wow me to the same extent as Architects of the West Kingdom. 

8 - Wingspan - I&#39;ll give Wingspan credit because of all the overt engine building games I&#39;ve played, it&#39;s the one where I most quickly understood the engine. It&#39;s a gorgeous game with fun game play but not a favourite of mine.

9 - 7 Wonders Duel - I feel kind of sad having 7 Wonders Duel so low on my list. I love fun open drafting mechanics. Bruno Cathala is my favourite designer. But I don&#39;t know, this one doesn&#39;t do it for me. Maybe I&#39;ll enjoy it more as time goes on. I&#39;m still excited and motivated to play it again. For me confusing iconography can really impede my enjoyment of a game. When I compare the iconography of this game to other games on this list that are heavy in iconography, I find this one has the worst use of iconography. I&#39;m constantly having to refer back to the rule book when I play this game which gets in the way of immersing myself in the experience. 

10 - The Crew - I&#39;ve played through a bunch of the earlier missions at two players. I don&#39;t know if trick taking games are just not my thing, if this game really suffers at two players or if it will improve as the missions become increasingly more complicated. But so far we&#39;ve accomplished every mission on the first attempt and I find it pretty dull.

Final thoughts: it&#39;s interesting to me how my rankings are almost in reverse order to the BGG rankings. I tend to prefer lighter games and love abstracts. I find BGG skews heavy and doesn&#39;t tend to favour abstracts (Azul is the top abstract game on BGG and only clocks in at 53 in the overall rankings!), so it&#39;s not too surprising that games like Patchwork, Azul and Cartographers are ranked a bit lower on BGG.

What are your top 10 games according to BGG rankings? And how would you rank them?

 So the way this game works is that each tile has got six sides right and depending on where you're sitting on the table, you'll have a side of the hex allocator. If you've got six players, every player is going to have a side of the hex allocated to them right, and you do this in like a logical manner. If you have got any kind of logic whatsoever. So first thing, you're going to do is you're going to set up the new season right, you're, going to set up the boats, we're going to stick a load of meeples on the boats right you're, going to set up the turn, all the tiles which you can Bid on in order to go first, second, third, fourth, in the next round, we'll draw new season tiles and in the winter bit of this select, which winter season tiles you're going to want to use from your hand right

 So you might have the fare, and this allows you to convert one red meatball into two green meeples. All you might have to store - and this converts one blue worker into one green worker. One thing about this is you can pay the relevant resources to upgrade atari and you flip it over, and then it becomes a more powerful version of the previous thing right. So if you have upgraded the hiring fare, it allows you to turn one tool in the free tools and likewise, if you upgrade the mason, then you can trade in one pickaxe for free gold right

 We generally like to talk a load of bollocks about tabletop gaming in general and in this video we're gon na be talking about a 2012 euro style tile line game. We'Re going to be talking about key flower and in this game, you'll be bidding on tiles, placing them into your village you'll, be using your tiles, or maybe your opponent's style, to give you victory points that will allow you to win the game. Keyflower Board Game Review - Still Worth It?

I also like the decision you just make to either run your engine or fight other people for new engibe parts or run someone elses engine but pay them for it.

You have direct conflict that can make or break a strategy but its not destructive so usually the loser in an interaction isnt as punished

Keyflower is my favorite game and when considering why, ive decided it comes down to the way different players interact.

 If workers get kicked off a losing bid, they can be put to work in a village somewhere, unless everything that player could actually use already has workers on it, and they don't have enough to raise a bid on a different tile. Experienced players are going to want to maximize their actions, so expect some AP when their present situation is pretty useless. This happens a lot.  So why bother winning bids for tiles? Because the tiles are worth points, and you can upgrade them for more points if you can transport the right combination of resources to them, and maybe get bonus points at the endgame

Castles of Mad King Ludwig was an interesting experience. It has a crazy campaign mode that's a real brain burner. Hey just beat the AI while not being able to rotate your tiles.

 Interestingly, in the proper rules tile bonuses don't seem nearly as important anymore as finding space for stuff is actually less forgiving with how things connect together, maybe I just haven't grokked the proper way yet. It also got it into my head somehow that corridors could never connect to corridors. Anyway.

Castles of Burgandy is really great and I paid the 12 bucks to own it as an app - this is less casual play, I guess, and more 'sit down and enjoy a solo game', against an opponent, without the fiddle, setup or teardown. It's great to be able to play the game in 2p mode when I have no one to enjoy the game with.

Personally, mine hasn't been so great. And I think I have it boiled down to a few points: 1- Learning the game. 2- Tactile bias. 3- People.

Learning the rules of a boardgame is a fairly unique experience, and almost a skill in itself. The nature of tabletop gaming forces you to constantly check the rulebook to tighten up your understanding. When I tried the digital version of Scythe for the first time, I immediately felt lost and wished I had a quick way to check the rulebook, but that required leaving the game and opening a PDF. And since the app game itself could handle a lot of the rules for me, there was less incentive to check the rules. I adopted a learn-as-you-go method similar to how videogames usually work. But it just doesn't work the same for boardgames. 

Still after a few plays, I started to get the rules down. But the AI opponent would still stomp me. Losing is fine, but having no idea how you lost is frustrating, because there's nothing to learn from. Because the game is digital, there was some iconographic differences from the tabletop version. Tabletop games need to be easily read and understood at a glance, while the digital version sent that task to different menus. This also contributed to making the learn-as-you-go method more difficult.

Then, there's the tactile bias. I think even if you were to port a near perfect boardgame to digital, it's still going to lose points because you are missing the tactile element of tabletop gaming. In other words, I started to wonder if Scythe was as good of a game as others have had me believe, or was it getting by on how visually beautiful and satisfyingly tactile it is? I've played and loved games like Scythe before --count up your points at the end of the game and see who wins-- but suddenly with the digital version, I was finding myself evaluating how much fun I was really having just sort of scoring points for the sake of scoring points. 

I think a larger part of what makes boardgames great is the people. Not only are you having conversation and laughing, but beating someone irl is far more satisfying (or maybe it makes you feel bad) no matter the method- scoring more points, reducing their health, etc. Playing the digital version really highlighted this for me, because I was not having any fun scoring points on an iPad. 

I also tried Root and Mystic Vale and I had similar results. Root had a very long tutorial and I just lost my patience. Mystic Vale was more of a success but I had a similar issue of not easily being able to know how I was being beat. Again losing is fine, but it sea easier to strategize and learn from loses at the table, for reasons that I don't really know. 

Shards of Infinity is amazing on the table or in the app. Just an all around great game, but being a card game I think separates it from the issues I'm having with digital boardgames. 

TL; DR Boardgames are harder to learn in their digital versions, and less fun because you don't get the tactile response and you aren't talking to people.

How has your experience been with digital boardgames?

 This one is unique and easy to setup and get moving. Don't be deceived by the cute artwork and accessibility, its a heavy game with about a 2 hour play time our first run for 2. A lot of player interaction with chances to sabotage your opponents but a nice balance of depth, complexity, and elegance. This one seems to test analysis paralysis and end game scoring can be a little math heavy

Something this game does that I like is not revealing your performance through scores until the end of the game and assigning resources in bulk deliveries with variable abilities so it's kind of like having a variable action point allowance system which you have to track throughout instead of just saying you get 4 action points on every turn. This game puts many mechanisms together keeping them cohesive and balanced but sometimes I wish there was a little more focus on the villages than the auctions

Fun game. Easy to get going but takes practice.

I am so happy I bought this game it is such a great design and simple enough to teach but has enough meat on its bones to keep you interested.  Highly recommend this games AAA+++
